Reading Audre Lorde in 2017 is both a revelation and a tragedy. A revelation because her writing is fresh, her language incomparable, her ideas transgressive, and her suggestions helpful and full of light. A tragedy because so little has changed since late 1970s-early 1980s for women, for people of color, for the 99-ers, in the school to prison pipeline, in the patterns of privilege, in the violence, in the internalized misogyny and racism. Audre Lorde was, truly, as great and passionate a critic of modernity as James Baldwin, and I sincerely hope that she gets the audience, too, albeit posthumously.What a great woman!

As a Black female living in America, I could relate to a lot of what she said and she raised a lot of important points. Most importantly, she made me think. I enjoyed reading it. Unfortunately, there were a few parts that I had trouble understanding so I need to read it again, but the book is very fantastic. She wrote wonderful letters, speeches, and essays. I'm looking forward to reading her poems. 'Definitely recommended.

This collection of prose by Audre Lorde is well worth reading though it is certainly dated in a literal sense. That is, these pieces date back to the 1970s and 1980s or earlier and refer to specific events and conditions of those times. But what’s both fresh and disappointing about her work is how little things have changed. I am glad I read this but wish the rage she articulates didn’t resonate so strongly decades later.

4.5 A work I'm glad to have read in its entirety, after only having read selected essays. "The Uses of Anger", "Uses of the Erotic", "Poetry is Not a Luxury" (esp for me, so alienated from poetry) in particular will stay with me for a long time. Sad to see how so many of these issues, especially regarding the relationship between white women and black women, have seemingly not progressed one bit.

I cannot offer high enough praise for this work. It is an amazing collection. The pieces are thought-provoking, deeply moving, inspiring and so well written. The insights it offers are not to missed. I couldn't stop talking about the book and the author and the important things she has to say. The impact is formed and heightened by the beautiful poetic composition and the direct and fearless way Lorde speaks. This book is beautiful, but it is also important, and worthwhile.

This is much more than a book, a collection of writings. It's an experience more like surviving a traumatic event, seeing a deep and distressing movie or having a long and difficult talk with someone who has been oppressed from all sides. It accomplishes that which no other book I have ever read has done. Aside from the profound personal impact it has had on me, it details a horror story of a life lived with incomparable insight into humanity as well as with courage which faces that horror every day. I bought and read the book based on the other reviews above. They are all correct, but the praise this book deserves is understated. It may well be the greatest book of psychological insight and advice ever written. Only Dostoevsky's works compare. Lorde defies all the labels she and others use to describe her. This is the most human of all books because it stares the weaknesses we all share right in the face and finds ways to fight if not conquer them as well as pointing out strategies that are counterproductive. Lorde allows the reader to get inside her skin like no other writer, and for the first time ever, made me feel the anger, terror, fear, helplessness I have sensed in many if not all black people. And yet her greatest criticisms are not of whites, but especially of her black sisters and then her brothers. She clearly does not set herself apart because she knows she has had "my boot on a sister's face". Richard Adams wrote a story called "The Hole in the Sky". Most people never see it, but this book describes best of all what makes up that hole and what it feels like to see it.

This book pieces together many sources that create a fairly comprehensive picture of Audre Lorde. She makes one of the more compelling cases for why anger should be in the arsenal of minority-status groups, which is something I'm always struggling with in feminism, Black feminism, et al.

I have searched long and hard for a book that reflects my search for myself that was hidden beneath half century of self hate and fear of being the outsider. Audre's book spoke to and from my heart.I recommend this book to women of color who know there is a deeper, more eternal power within them that must be tapped into for our survival as women.

I bought this book on pre-order because I have all of Estee's other books and they are absolute favorites. This one takes cookbooks to a whole new level. it's beautiful, practical, and inspiring as well. I actually liked it so much that I sent one to each of my sisters-in-law, no birthday, no special reason, just 'I'm thinking of you'. They were so touched!If you get this book, you absolutely must check out the gluten free brownie recipe called 'you'll never know brownies'. i doubled it (in five minutes or less) it was gone (in about an hour or less) and no one would believe its actually healthy!

Although this cookbook is well-done and pictures of the finished products beautifully displayed, I was disappointed, mostly because I am a a very "simple" chef and found some of the recipes rather exotic! I enjoy the author's Kosher Scoop newsletter and thought that the cookbook would be along the same vein. This is not to say that it would be a worthwhile purchase for those who are more adventuresome than I am! I would still highly recommend this to others.

I bought this book a few weeks ago and it is already one of my favorites. The recipes I've tried have been big hits with my family. The chocolate cake and apple bundt cake recipes are worth the cost of the book.

I was totally blown away by this book. It is so professionally created- from the organization of the recipes, to the gorgeous photos and, of course, the recipes themselves! It's visually STUNNING. I love the way it has different, unexpected graphics and layouts as you keep turning the pages. Also, there's a really nice introduction and themed section breakers, both of which make it feel like you're reading a magazine that has been thoughtfully prepared for your enjoyment. The recipes are interesting and contemporary, and, from what I can tell, seem pretty easy and straightforward. Makes a great gift!

Her love of new things ensures that she is always original and creative in the kitchen. Estee lives in Toronto with her family.As I read through this fabulous cookbook I felt as though I got to know Estee, her friends and family. Many of these family members and friends inspired or contributed recipes to her book Cooking Inspired. I also realized that though I do not keep kosher myself, the recipes are really for anyone who enjoys good food. Using the best quality ingredients you can afford means that you don't have to play around with them too much to make a delicious dish. And being a creative cook means that you can use her recipes as guides, as all recipes should be used, to prepare the dish your way. If you don't keep kosher it really doesn't matter. I was having friends for dinner and making an Italian inspired meal so I tweaked Estee's fabulous mushroom lasagna recipe and added spicy Italian sausage. Since neither our guests nor Steve and I keep kosher it was perfectly all right. And was it ever good!!!“Creative cooking does not have to be time-consuming cooking", states Estee. I bought my copy a few days before it's release at Kosherfest 2014.The moment it was in my hands, the cover graciously invited me inside. It was a "feast" before my eyes!! Estee's style is bold and daring, but the recipes are surprisingly user friendly. She uses recognizable ingredients and emphasizes fresh herbs and spices.Lots of well styled photos will "inspire" you to try the recipes.She takes you on a culinary journey through the seasons, with a collage of photographs of "life" Cookbooks are my favorite choice for gift giving, and this one has shot to the top of my list! It can be enhanced for any occasion by including a serving piece or a gift certificate from a gift store.(I've already started). Leave yours out on display. I was given this book as a holiday gift and I could not be happier. This is truly a great cookbook for someone who enjoys creative and delicious meals. The variety is what I enjoyed the most about this particular book. Some chefs focus on one style of cooking or gear their books towards one particular genre which can sometimes be boring or even frustrating because you want variety in your daily cooking. There were dishes from all different categories and that is important when someone cooks as often as I do. I appreciated the author/chef's heart warming description of where the dish comes from and who in her family inspired her for each dish. Cooking brings family together and the concept of her book shows the reader that she is a warm, loving and family oriented person that understands how to get kids and adults to enjoy the same meals. Some dishes are made easier then others but I enjoyed that since it provided a fair amount of challenge to the frequent cook. The author also allows for the individual to use their preference for substitutions which is important for some people who have diet restrictions. I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family and look forward to her next book or even cooking show!

While Nazi Germany had occupied Poland, it did not appear that in 1941 the Germans were the driving force in the destruction of the Jewish community in Jedwabne, Poland. Rather, it was the unfettered anti-Semitism of the Poles themselves that caused them to kill half the residents of Jedwabne. The brutal slaying of so many Jewish people,, about 1600, in a wanton act of carnage is surely reprehensible and yet another example of man's inhumanity to man.Written is a somewhat pedantic style, the book is a bit of a slog, but worth reading if one is interested in the holocaust. It took a lot for the Poles to acknowledge what happened, as they were inclined to blame the Germans, but evidence at a trial in the 1950s was dispositive on the issue. Moreover, similar acts of anti-Semitism had also occurred in neighboring towns. At the heart of it was all was greed, pure and simple, on the part of the Poles involved. That was all it took for some to turn on their Jewish neighbors and commit wanton, mass slaughter.

A very poignant and well documented story of one Polish town during WWII. A must read for anyone even remotely interested in attempting to learn something - not only about the Shoah - but about human nature, as exposed during the Holocaust.

Required text for a university class.This story is quite horrific, I never considered the level in which Poland was involved with the mass murdering of Jewish peoples. This book brings Poland's involvement in the atrocities to light and the injustice that the Jewish members suffered years after the murders. It really shows the depths of evil that can manifest in humanity.

Paints grim picture of the massacre that occurred in Jedwabne, I recommend this book to anyone interested in finding out a fraction of what it might have felt to be living during this dangerous time.

This tells the story of a town in Poland that you may not have heard of. It is hard to believe that people can treat others in that way. It is another book of the Holocaust and worth reading to learn more about that period that often goes unheard of.

It was a well written text about a horrific event I was unaware of, but it needs an addendum to the current state of affairs in Poland.

Volume 30 continues the Karasuno v Inarizaki fight and provides more information on what Karasuno was like in Tanaka and Nishinoya’s first year at the school. Largely the match is framed around Tanaka’s contribution to the match and the building growing excitement and anticipation for him to do something. Tsukishima continued to provide some voice for what was happening and Hinata, as usual, did likewise, though with more spunk and energy.The other half focused on Kenma and his background with Guts and Determination with Taketora and framed it around their match against a team that most people will forget (well I guess they will be remembered for being the team that played into Kenma’s scheme). In any case, it was a bit jarring to go from that epic Karasuno match to this, but it did eventually pick up steam, once it established more of the background.In any event the volume was largely exciting and worth it. Additionally, I think one could really make a claim of comparing the Tsukishima Tanaka relationship to Taketora and Kenma, oddly, and surprising, not Hinata.Extras included the usual portraits and drawings in between chapters.

On one hand, this book feels like it's for advanced t winners or training leaders and on the other hand, it's a master course for beginners, helping them to get training right early in their careers. I really enjoyed the book and learned a lot.

I bought this book a little over 2 years ago and I remember reading it and being blown away by this idea of how to provide effective training. This book is full of so many great ways to improve your training and I now make what I learned a standard for every training I do. My biggest take always from this book have been training is a process and not an event and that the purpose of training is to improve performance. This book is my absolute go to and has become my personal Training Bible.

A must-implement revolution in learning and development. Everything I learned in my training masters degree, all in one well-written book.

I am in the performance improvement field and I have been studying this book. It is a tremendous asset to help you move your thinking from just creating training, to consulting on improving employee performance. Highly recommended to anyone in the training industry (trainer, instructional designer, etc.).

I am in awe of this book, possibly because its author paid much importance to the inner lives of the characters, unlike some action-filled novels lacking in depth.In the story, Renée Michel and Paloma Josse are the two main characters, who although living in the same apartment building do not know about each other and how much they are alike until more than halfway through the book.Renée Michel is a 54-year-old concierge from humble beginnings but with a developed mind and tastes who hides behind her vocation. Paloma is the 12-year-old, soon-to-be-13, who comes from a rich well-educated family; she despises her family, their snobbery, and the life she is being forced to live. Both Renée and Paloma concentrate and reflect on the nature of true beauty, art, and the meaning of life and death.Without giving much about the plot, I can only say that when one of the tenants in the building die and his apartment is bought by a Japanese man who understands and befriends both ladies, and then the two learn about each other and connect. The story has a sad but poignant ending.Although the novel has an immense amount of sophisticated cultural, philosophical, and enlightening thought, it also has a delicately balanced emotional side to it with gentle and reflective twists and turns and remarkably touching scenes at its end.The story is written from the two viewpoints of Renée and Paloma. The viewpoints are in different chapters and in two different typefaces; thus, it is easy to know who is the speaker. The characters are wonderfully developed and in addition to the original theme of what makes life worth living, the themes of hypocrisy, class consciousness, and the importance of arts and letters in a life make this a unique novel.I loved this novel for its delicateness yet at the same time its intensity and for its referrals to cultural icons and thoughts and the characters’ musings on them. There are some things about the characters that coincide with who I am. This, too, may be part of the reason why I enjoyed reading this book so much.

I never write reviews, but I feel like I am obligated to do it for this book. Too many undeserving negative reviews. Yes, this book has quite a number of prolonged philosophical "wonderings". And that's exactly why I loved it. It was an immersion into somebody else's world - a world of a pretentious teenager, a concierge woman who loves reading (no, not a genius as one review suggested, just a well read person).And their thoughts about the people around them, about the world. I think giving it one star is practically a sacrilege. You can mention that you didn't like it - I can understand that. But the writing is exquisite, it is beautiful. If you don't like philosophy, at least you can appreciate the language.In my world I would give one star to something like the Twilight books - the writing is pretty bad. However, the Elegance of the Hedgehog is nowhere close to something like that. If you like Action books, don't go for it. If you like slow paced books, books that make you think - this is a book for you.

I felt as if I had found kindred spirits in Renee, Paloma, and Kakuro, old friends whom I had just met. It was joy to watch them find each other, but I must also warn you that the ending, while hopeful, is not entirely happy.This is a very remarkable book, full of deep (but not pretentious) philosophical rumination disguised as the day-to-day trivialities of life in an unremarkable apartment building in Paris.Also, the translation is itself quite remarkable. What must have been very idiomatic French has been rendered as equally idiomatic English (American English, at that). Since I don't read French, I can't be certain about the accuracy of the translation, but I had to keep reminding myself that it was not originally written in English.

This was quite frankly, one of the most self serving pretentious set of characters I have encountered in a very long time. If it had not been the assigned book for one of the book clubs I belong to, I would have deleted it from my Kindle within an hour of starting. At the 3/4 mark of the book, humanity attempts to take hold, but fails.If you enjoy lon, rambling, pretentious statements and characters that offer little to nothing to care about, this is a perfect book for you.

The book was hard to get into; the first third is mostly interior monologue of a tired, grumpy, middle aged woman. Since I paid my $9.99 to Amazon, I kept going to get my money's worth. I am glad I did because the remainder of the book was a trip to the philosophical divine. The book is highly original, and does not fit into any genre. I can only recommend it if you are up for an adventure into the purpose of life.

i read 2 or 3 books a week. usually at some point, i reread those books. had to force myself through this book. the first words that came to mind -- pretentious & annoying. there were some interesting &/or amusing bits, but i recommend taking it out of a library instead of buying it. my favorite characters were Leo the cat and the woman who wanted to become a veterinarian. as for the ending -- seriously? i threw the book across the room.
