There are thousands of volumes of information about the U.S. Civil War. There are even entire libraries specializing on the subject. So where do you begin?Groene provides an excellent launching point by describing the most significant U.S. Civil War references, and he suggests not only where to search but how.He goes into considerable detail on how to use the 128-volume Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies in the War of the Rebellion (OR) reference, and it 31-volume naval counterpart (ORN). He also suggests resources for regimental histories that will help you trace the histories of higher-ranking officers and get information covering everything from the regiment's mustering to the disbanding of its survivors. There's a large section in the book devoted to identifying U.S. Civil War equipment and researching the backgrounds of its owners. Groene shares his own research experiences regarding how a name on a sword or pistol has often lead to the discovery of an interesting chain of events. This book is ideal whether you are a genealogist, a U.S. Civil War historian or a weapons collector.

Lighweight and handbag size research aid to those searching for ancestors who participated in the Civil War.You can take it with you as a reminder of resources available when you visit libraries or family resource centers. Lists places and organizations that may have records you can't find elsewhere. As a geneaology hobbiest for decades, I found this little gem a wonderful aid. It put me on track to locate my great grandfather's military record and discover in which battles he took part.

Brother in law loved it.

This books is a good tool for the person doing genealogy. It would also be good for the history buff.

As I have ancestors who fought in the American Civil War, I found this book most helpful in tracking them down.

A five star book of drawings, but copied from a German text. It could have been excellent, but lacks anything to make it suitable for a non-German speaker. No descriptions or suitable identification in English. Just high quality line drawings from a foreign book.

Sure, it'd be nice if more of the drawings were printed a bit darker. And I'm always a fan of having his books be as big as possible. Good news is, they didn't clutter up the pages with a bunch of words. They let the drawings speak for themselves. There's whole bits of worlds here that will never exist. His drawings are a hint of what else he could have accompished. If only more folks could turn these into real buildings. Heck, I've always wanted to just make some models from some of the best of his drawings. Now that's something I would buy. Anyone game for creating some? I rarely say, "America's best" anything but there's no question, even 50 years after his death he's still America's best architect. Like Jimi is still America's best guitarist 36 years on. I love fine books with big pictures of his various homes and other buildings. To me, this is something else altogether, a journey into a world that exists something like worlds that come into existance in paintings or novels. Heck, he even does nice drawings of people in some of these. His brilliant knack for designing buildings into the context of its setting is one of his great strengths and it's even more clear in a number of these drawings. Who cares if this book was published in 1962. That is not a factor. I am unaware of a better book of his drawings, at least one that I can buy on amazon.com for under $10. Sure, there's some over $100. but I'm a workin' man, I can't afford that. I bring this into the home and my wife even admires it even though she's not the FLW fan that I am. Quality will tell folks. Get this if you have any inclinations for his drawings. A very satisfying walk through the spirits of what could have been. chrisbct@hotmail.com

The labels on all the plans are in German. The product description says English. I got it for my husband for Father’s Day and of course he noticed it right away. It is a bit of a misrepresentation.

This book is a very good collection of F.LL. Wright's earlier drawings of various sites and plans. It would be great to have one in hard cover if there were any that were published.

A beautiful book for anyone who appreciates architecture and the man who innovated modern living. Includes most blueprints except for the infamous Hollyhock House in Los Angeles.

it's HUGE, was not expecting that, but it's perfect for my grandpa, who I bought it for!

Best $3.99 I’ve spent lately. Love the unexpected larger scale of the book, the feel of the paper, and of course the fascinating content from the early career of FLW. Many elevations and floor plans for private homes. But also larger commercial and sacred spaces.

Great drawings in large format and reasonable price

I am a fan of Sarah Vowell's, owning most if not all of her books. She is extremely knowledgeable but I must say her sardonic writing gets tiring after a while. Not everything about the American Revolution, George Washington, and one of his favorite "sons" Lafayette, is funny. It just isn't. And while we do need to lighten up and understand the quirky nature of history in general and American history in particular, Vowell's voice in this book simply gets tiring. I am not impressed with this one, although I do admire Vowell's brilliance and ability as a writer. Just hope she expands her horizons with her next effort. If she focuses on something like the American Civil War and tells us about it the same manner she does with this one, I'm going to return the book. Vowell needs to expand the way she tells her stories beyond being cynical or sardonic.

I'd heard about Sarah Vowell, but I was never interested in reading any of her books until I heard her being interviewed about this one. Something about what she said intrigued me, so I got it. It won't be the last book of hers that I read -- in fact, I've got another one on order already. She reminds me of Bill Bryson, though I've only read one of his books, in that she provides lots of history combined with contemporary wit and humor and a sense of the uncanny connections between historical events separated by generations. For example, she discusses a connection between the story of Lafayette and Herman Melville that I found intriguing, but there are quite a few other examples. She also makes some American icons (and their British counterparts) come alive in ways that traditional (i.e., often bland) history does not.I have only one criticism of the book, really: the story of Lafayette recedes in the background (sometimes out of the picture entirely) in favor of her retelling of key episodes in the Revolutionary War; I didn't really expect a history of the War and was disappointed that Lafayette vanishes at times. However, she does a very good job in describing the weird coincidences and serendipity that resulted in the defeat of the British.I also have a second complaint, but not against Ms. Vowell (well, not really). There was one instance where she talks about a solider named Stephen in one place and a few pages later he becomes Stephens (or maybe it was Steven and Stevens; I can't recall). As I often ask, where were the editors? If I caught this on a casual read, why didn't someone else catch it? Maybe having to do an index would have helped.

Sarah Vowell’s acerbic, insightful wit comes through loud and clear in this fascinating account of French General Lafayette and his role in the American Revolution, but it took me a while to adjust to her irreverent banter in print--as well as being an author Vowell is also known for her radio pieces on This American Life. This book runs almost 270 pages without any chapter breaks, and reads like the long-winded but mesmerizing stand-up routine of a highly knowledgeable, history obsessed comedian who knows how to use humor to make a point.Lafayette was still a teenager when he left his young bride behind and snuck out of France to join the American Revolution against the wishes of his family, but he ended up becoming such a key figure in the winning of the war that cities all over the country are named for him. Vowell has a special knack for revealing the personalities of the many historical figures she writes about, their foibles, revealing quirks, and strengths. Since Lafayette had a close relationship with George Washington he features prominently in the book and I really appreciated getting a clearer picture of the man behind the myth. Vowell even manages to make battles and military strategy interesting, in part by keeping her focus on the people involved, and in part by not overlooking the missteps or ironies of the situations.Vowell finds plenty of opportunities to relate the struggles of the Revolutionary period to American politics today, pointing out that many current ideological divisions and tendencies have an origin, or at least an analog, dating back to the founding of the country. The book also covers the aftereffects of the Revolutionary War in France and Britain, and the America of 1824, which was when John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson competed in a notorious presidential election and the then elderly Lafayette made a return trip to the country that was still so besotted with him that two thirds of the population of New York City welcomed him ashore. While researching the book Vowell visited historic sites in America and France and she takes readers along on those trips too, giving us her impressions of tourist destinations like Williamsburg and Valley Forge while relating what happened there in the past.In this book Vowell manages the neat trick of being both funny and stirring. She clearly loves history, and she makes it very easy to join her in that passion.

Excellent softcover detailing the RPO codes and engines for each the years in every Chevrolet model. Well done with great horsepower data including intake and exhaust sizes. Unfortunately thr reorder then yearns for more such as carburetor and ignition. Still the best inexpensive collection for Chevyfans

This is a great trip backwards through time for any gearhead. It provides specs on the engines and has great pictures. Would make a great coffee table book. My only con is that the book's cover is bland without the slip cover.

When I first bought my Kindle, by sheer chance, Spellmonger was one of my first purchases. I read it with great pleasure, immediately looked up Mr. Mancour and found his blog and was very pleasantly surprised to find out that the publication of Warmage was imminent.Having now read Warmage, I find it a very different book than Spellmonger; basically, Spellmonger could have acted as an introduction to an epic fantasy series while Warmage was the first book; and what a first installment! For a start, it is an extremely long read. If it was in print form, I suspect it would come in at the best part of 600 pages if not over that. Despite its length though, the pace never slackens and it also gives justice to the unorthodox structure of having two stories running parallel to each other, just on slightly different timelines. One is very much focused on the political aspect of the crisis facing the main character while the other narrates the military aspect. It is not until the end that the political story catches up to the military story. They are both equally interesting and equally readable. I suspect that Machiavelli's The Prince has a prominent place on Mr. Mancour's bookshelf.Minalan, our main character, was an under achiever who has been hoisted onto the path of power by his acquisition of a witchstone; sometimes he stumbles upon this path while at other times he positively dances. He is certainly not perfect but he is thankfully no dummy either. The supporting cast is very well drawn and thank goodness that we have a single person view of the whole story; multiple points of view seem to be all the rage right now and I find that a lot of the time this is an excuse for padding out the length of books with meaningless backgrounds and motivations as well as lazy plotting as we find the same incident in a book being related again and again by different people. The author avoids this. One of the great pleasures of the book is that we see Minalan developing in many ways but mostly as a person and this personal development influences his abilities as a mage, politician and general. If this book is anything to go by, he will need all of these abilities and more in the future. The style of the narrative is bright, breezy and deceptively humorous; some of the incidents are purely lighthearted, like the reports he receives that his fiancée is not getting on particularly well with his mother but in many cases we can see that Minalan is using the humour to mask the horror and desperation he feels about some of the situations he is forced to confront. One slight criticism I do have is that Minalan's development as a magician does not seem to be keeping up with the other aspects of his character but that will probably come in future books. Finally a couple of words of warning: this is a beta version of the book and there are a few typos here and there. I am not going to mark down the book for that. They are easily fixed and the sheer scope of the story easily eclipses minor issues like that. It is extremely good value for its length and a final version of the prose will be uploaded next month by all accounts, possibly priced at a dollar more. Honestly, it would be extremely good value at twice the price. Also, the bad guys here are really, really evil with a few twists that I have not come across before so be warned. The end of the book announces that Book 3 of the series, Magelord, will be issued in 2013. It is good that Mr. Mancour is giving himself a year to write it as this is a fantastic start and the author is obviously taking great care in his world building and the development of the story; but I also hope that it is not issued too far into 2013 as, like the other reviewers, I am eagerly waiting for Minalan's next adventures.

The second in the Spellmonger series, "Warmage" starts where the previous novel, "Spellmonger", left off; the goblins are coming, with an expeditionary force of about a hundred thousand, while the Five Duchies are unready to acknowledge, let alone meet, the threat. Minalan faces dangers to himself and his comrades from the Censorate (a kind of magical inquisition), roadblocks due to petty power-plays of minor nobles, scheming courtiers and spies, and the rather grander schemes of the ruling Dukes. If he can overcome his human opponents, he'll still have to face the goblin horde. But, if he can succeed, he may be able to usher in a new future for mages, removing the previous restrictions on owning property and conducting research; he himself may become the first Magelord in generations."Warmage" shows significant improvements in writing style and originality from "Spellmonger". Part of that is that "Spellmonger" took a traditional "goblins invade" storyline with archetypal characters, then slowly warped them into original forms; "Warmage" begins within this more original framework. Another part is that Mancour has grown as an author. The book is epic in length, and describes an entire military campaign in detail; if you think George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones series, but without the character jumping, you wouldn't be far off. The level of internal realism is impressive, as was Mancour's ability to keep all the characters straight; I occasionally felt a similarity to Greek epics, where many side characters conduct much smiting. The characters continued to grow, with the most significant growth centered around Minalan's coming to grips with his increasing responsibilities and power. One of the things I most liked about this novel was that though magic played a large role, there wasn't a "magic bullet" solution to the goblins. So, that's the good part, and now we come to the bad; Mancour desperately needs a proofreader. He can obviously write, understands semi-colons, punctuation in general, sentence structure, etc. That said, there were way too many homonyms (words that sound the same but are spelled differently, eg greaves- a piece of armor, vs. grieves- sad feeling), occasional accidental keystrokes (eg, adding "m," instead of just ","), the occasional sentence skip (normally where a bit of text was accidentally deleted), etc. The book is long, and it's inevitable that there will be mistakes. Also, to reiterate, Mancour can write; the book is well edited, and it reads well despite the errors. Still, it's at the point that the errors are distracting. I'll keep an eye on the novel, and when there's been a significant proofread, edit my review and bump the book up to 5 stars. Until then, I'd advise readers to think of this as an ARC (Advance reader copy, or pre-release book) that hasn't been to the proofreader yet.Overall, a highly enjoyable, impressive book that will keep even the fastest reader occupied for a while. Recommended to fantasy fans in general; I wouldn't be surprised if enjoyment from this book resulted in friends being recommended to start the series.

Magic. Action. Adventure. Intrigue. Politics. Not a romance novel. Good tongue-in-cheek humor without overwhelming the plot. These books are far longer than most fantasy 'novels' on Amazon these days and well worth the price. Characterization is decent and development is solid, especially the younger characters who are still growing up. The magic system is balanced well enough to sound plausible without explaining so much that all mystery is lost. A bit of homophone editing to do (the kind spell check misses), but not bad enough to interfere with my reading. Overall, an outstanding 5 stars!

If you've read any of my reviews you know I do not give books 4 stars. I believe most books are between 1 star bad and 3 stars good. 4 stars are for great book. So you get how much I like this book. But the thing is the whole Spell monger series is four stars. This is a great series, and if you really want to hear something special buy the Audible books in this series John Lee (The reader) is fantastic.

The story being told is fantastic, enough to hook a new reader on the entirety of the series. Characters are richly developed and stand out well. The world the author has crafted is superb.Pay special attention to the times indicated at the start of each chapter, as the constant bouncing back and forth between flashbacks and current events is quite confusing if you aren't looking for it at the beginning. There are many grammatical errors in this series as well as entire segments of paragraphs that are completely missing. Editing seems to have been completely missing from this entire endeavor. Many of the errors are so basic and any author/editor should know better (there, their, they're).
