I was so anxious to read this book, as Suzy Becker and I have so much in common. I too am a Lesbian author, and my partner of fifty-seven years is now dealing with a brain tumor. Imagine my delight when we were able to attend a book reading by Suzy at our local cancer center. She read key selections from her book and really shared her personal journey dealing with her brain tumor as well as its effect not only on her, but her family, and most of all, her partner. I was honored to leave with her that evening my two books - YOUR STORY MATTERS (TELL IT) and CLAUDIA AND ESTELLE THE EXTRAORDINARY GAY COUPLE which sharemy journey of dealing with being gay as well as dealing with my partner's life threatening illnesses. I hope that if Suzy and her partner read my story, they will receive the support and encouragement her book gave to me.

I have just finished reading "I HAD BRAIN SURGERY, WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?" and have come back to Amazon to buy 3 more copies for my clients! Suzy Becker's style is engaging and accessible, and the way she takes you through her ordeal reads like a good page-turner! I could not wait to find out how that chapter of her life concluded. As a professional who works with many high-level adults who are challenged, in the prime of life, with understanding their "new brains" after stroke, surgery, or brain injury, Suzy may now be my new co-treater, helping me ease people into higher levels in their recovery. But if you are a lay reader, fear not - this is not a book filled with professional jargon. It is written in a style that can speak to all of us - survivor, family member, or friend. As a matter of fact, I need yet another copy for a friend who had Suzy's type of surgery two years ago!

Having a brain tumor, and treatment for it, is a very weird experience, and one that is almost impossible to describe to even the most supportive people around you. During my own recovery period post-surgery, I came across this book while browsing for more practical recovery guides. I looked forward to hearing what the author went through, along with looking forward to reading something humorous after spending so much time reading research and statistics and other dry material about my condition. Becker's experience was of course different from mine: different family, different treatment, different prognosis. But despite these differences, I pounded the couch and shouted "YES!" repeatedly, at her spot on descriptions of some of the emotions, reactions, and difficulties which I had been dealing with and which I couldn't articulate or in some cases been able to recognize. While I don't have a button to wear on my tee shirt, I do mutter this title under my breath at times as I figure out my new normal, and the resulting inner lift is worth the price of the book.

I am epileptic. I have had seizures for 43 years. In December I had Left Temporal Craniotomy. The operation was a turning point in my life. Since the day of the surgery, I have had no seizures at ALL! I used to have two to three parital complex seizures a day. Grandmal every month. The only thing concerning is my short-term memory and speech have been affected. I do not have the ability and talk like I did at one time. I should not let that bother me! THe reason? I have never driven a motor vehicle. Never went seizure-free for six months. The miracle that occured has brought tears of job to my eyes. Last week I given a Louisiana Drivers License. I just bought my first vehicle! I have learned not to dwell on the things you used to do, but, instead on the GIFTS that our maker has done for me. Because of the book I am focusing on my interests. THis fall I start my Doctorate in Psychology. Never would have thought! Thank you for a fantastic book that changed my attitude towards my life and future.

suzy is a wonderful author on such an emotional subject, a definate must-read. one page you're chuckling at her and the next page in tears, it's a perfect blend of what living with epilepsy is really like. of course epilepsy causes us a lot more tears than laughter, but laughing and 'just letting it go' a few moments at a time is just as vital as our meds.i read it in the months leading up to brain surgery and highly recommend for anyone facing it, contemplating it, or has already had it. taking her attitude of 'what's your excuse' was very smart for me going in, and 10-fold after. she sheds a both humorous and emotional light on all the feelings of ourselves and reactions of others when they find out. for me it has helped with self-assurance and self-healing after such a life risking and life altering event.

Author and illustrator Suzy Becker writes about her experience being diagnosed with a brain tumor and having brain surgery. Her great sense of humor (including the book title) and her little drawings throughout the book keep the reader's interest while she still manages to tell her painful story with honesty. It is especially helpful that she focuses on the unintended, temporary damage that can come from brain surgery and the long, difficult road to recovery. Brain surgery survivors will identify with her struggle; hopefully, other readers will gain a better understanding of those who undergo this type of surgery.

Suzy Becker has written the definitive survival guide for post-surgery recovery from brain surgery. Reading her book confirmed that I wasn't crazy but was suffering from cognitive deficits that my surgeon, neurologist and oncologist told me were impossible to have. The book made me realize that the lack of empathy from the medical team that treated me pre, during and post surgery is not my imagination. While I am not so fond of my neurologist that I give him gifts, I did give him a copy of I Had Brain Surgery, What's Your Excuse? With the book was a little note expressing my hope that by reading it he would be able to understand and have some empathy for his patients.Thank you, Suzy Becker, for an illuminating and hysterically funny primer on what is a not so funny problem in the medical community. You have inspired me to continue on the path to complete recovery with hope.
