This is a wonderful book! The scripture passages are of manageable length for a devotional time. The passages from C.S.Lewis were chosen well, because they are a complete thought. The passages fill a couple of small pages, making them the perfect length, when added to the scripture choices, for quiet time contemplation. My amazement at the depth of C.S. Lewis is boundless. I highly recommend this book.
Of course I am a fan of all books by C. S. Lewis, so it was not a surprise that I enjoyed this book, Preparing for Easter. However, I enjoyed it so much, I made notes in it, and underlined interesting parts, so next Lent I will enjoy this book all over again!
I would love to give this book 5 stars, and I would but for one flaw. The kindle version, at least, has the readings tied to certain days of the week. This would be fine if Resurrection Sunday was the same every year. Or if you live a life that guarantees that you will be able to read the designated reading on the designated day. It is a minor distraction, but a distraction nonetheless. As for the readings, it is Lewis. Challenging, thoughtful, witty at times and instructive. If you don't have time to read the full books, this is a good collection of excerpts.
An excellent Lent devotional! I am so pleased with the excerpt selections and the format. This is not a dumbed-down, feel-good, brain candy daily devotional. The selections are deep, thoughtful, and totally in tune with the major themes of Lent. As an Anglican, I resonate strongly with much of Lewis's theological and philosophical writing; I've read most of the works included in this volume, so it has been a treat to revisit portions of them from day to day.
This was my introduction to C.S. Lewis and I was not disappointed. His writing is very deep and and thought provoking. I had to slow down my usual speed reading and read and read again much of his writing to understand exactly what he was trying to say because his ideas and insights are so fascinatingly original. Definitely recommend.
I realize that reading through the last three days of Lent , this is not an easy inspirational read. It is about as deep in theological reading, expressed in complex verbage and sentence structure as you will find. However, the time one spends in working through his thought processes is well worth the reward. While many equate c.s. lewis with Tales of Narnia, in his other works one discovers a world not so simplistic and even deviating from what interpretations we are used to hearing regarding the Gospel. My husband and i are reading it together, thus using two minds to decipher one mind of Lewis!If i could, i would recommend Screwtape Letters to anyone who wants to enjoy Lewis in a relaxing but thoughtful way.
C.S. Lewis can be a difficult writer. But he can also break down a complicated concept into simple analogies and words like no other. This collection exposes a wide range of his writings and pairs well with the weeks leading up to Easter. Great read, will take this up next year.
This book, like most CS Lewis stuff, is very heady - you can't quickly read through it, it takes some thinking for sure. So, don't think of this as a quick devotion for Easter! I love all CS Lewis writing though, so if you do as well, you'll love this.
