In my quest to find proper study tools for Bible Study, I was really fortunate to hear about this volume. One of the best features of this work is its claim that it definitely lives up to: it defines words that (unfortunately by the mass of professing Christendom that takes up "issue" with the beloved King James Bible) are claimed to be "archaic", "obsolete" and the worst "should be removed". In its third edition, this book not only defines these so-called "archaic" words, but also as a bonus demonstrates that the vast majority of these words that are looked down upon by the masses are no more archaic than news publications and magazines from the last about 25 years or so. It also shows that the most used excuses for not using the KJB anymore "its to hard to understand" "we don't talk like that anymore" and "these (the new versions) are so much easier to understand" if taken seriously and searched out have no foundation either. Many of the new versions also use what could be considered as "difficult words" with some replacing simple one or two syllable words in certain spots of the KJB with an even harder word ! I would recommend this work to all believers. Ultimately however, understanding the Bible is not a head issue its a heart issue. Do you come to the Bible standing in Judgement of the word of God or meekly at the feet of Jesus ?“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

This is an excellent reference for Sunday School teachers and Bible students alike. It has an index in the back of the book for easy location of words. I read from the King James Bible and I don't use this reference book now as much as I used to because I've learned the meaning of KJV words pretty quickly since using this as a source guide. But it's handy to have in your personal library if you're unable to figure out a word or passage.

Wanted this for years. Finally got it. I enjoy knowing kjv archaic words instead of guessing at them. Simply finding an archaic old english word in modern magazine or newspaper doesn't mean its used very often or understood so unless theres a way of looking the 1611 meaning up, the word is obscure.

On the day after receiving this book I was able to use it twice. It happened that I ran into the words "trow" and "youward" in my AV reading. Both times I reached for this book and easily found the word, its meaning, its usage in the AV, and how other translations have handled these words. I couldn't be more pleased. It is now on my shelf in easy reach when I do my daily reading of the AV.The book itself is bound well, opens easily and lies flat for comfortable reading. The print is dark, the paper thick enough so there's no bleedthrough from the next page. The print is also large enough for readers of all ages. In other words, the author/publisher has taken efforts to design the book so that the reader can actually use it with comfort.I am extremely pleased and recommend it for anyone studying, contemplating, or just perusing the King James Version.

Great book. I've been reading front to back, one word at a time. Meanings are explained clearly and contrasts are shown that expose the modern bungles for what they are. The explanations under each word is like a devotional read unto itself.

This book is definitely adequate enough preparation for the Pennsylvania Real Estate Exam. I am on chapter 3 as of right now and all the material so far does emphasize major parts of the exam. There are many fine, hardworking craftsmen of the written word, and the sum of the parts of their novels are very enjoyable to read, but then there are writers who also possess the skill of an artist. In their novels every word is perfectly chosen and placed in combination with every other word in an inevitability that makes structure disappear, and the whole is much greater than just the sum of its parts. The Gone–Away World by Nick Harkaway is such a work.In it we follow an unnamed protagonist through childhood and college into a proxy “Un-War” in the Elective Theatre, formerly known as the prosperous and peaceful country of Addeh Katir. There he is reunited with his childhood best friend Gonzo. When the enemy launches a chemical attack, our side answers with “the most advanced weapon in the history of warfare,” The Go Away Bomb that disappears the enemy: “We are… feeling a bit superior and waiting for the order to do some more demonstrative world-editing, when our very own Green Sector vanishes from the map… like a sandcastle being washed away by the tide… The same thing is happening everywhere. Not just in the Elective Theatre.”Predictably, the effects are unpredictable and uncontrollable; the tide that ebbs also flows, carrying back a recombinant and deadly genesis of the thoughts, forms, feelings, memories, dreams and nightmares of everything it supposedly erased. Most of humanity has been made “Gone-Away” and the survivors battle desperately: “this is not an attack. It’s an atmosphere.”Protagonist, Gonzo and a ragtag group are rescued by Piper 90 (“love child of a bulldozer and a shopping mall”) which is laying “The Pipe” that contains the anti-stuff, called FOX, which makes the Gone-Away stuff go away, “making a strip of land which is safe to live in.” This is where the remnants of humanity begin to rebuild.​Fast forward a few years and this outfit of roughnecks is hired for a dangerous job of putting out a fire on The Pipe that looks like sabotage. Here the story takes a shocking turn that throws into question the protagonist’s entire history and future, and a horrible secret is found to underlie the system that keeps this strip of the old world, this “Livable Zone,” intact.A rousing dystopian story with a terrific story arc that can be enjoyed on just those terms, The Gone-Away World is also a cautionary tale that confronts the endemic, species-defining stupidity and hidden moral equivocations of human life on Earth. Notwithstanding, Nick Harkaway is fundamentally an optimist, and quite funny; I will definitely be reading more of him. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed Nick Harkaway's writing style in this book. Even if there were no story or characters, the colourful comic style would have been enough to keep me reading. It did remind me, in that respect, of PG Wodehouse, and I think some other reviewers might have mentioned this. But the comparison is misleading a bit. Apart from comic language, Wodehouse also creates comic drama and populates it with ridiculous characters, which Harkaway does not attempt. The story itself and basic concept were quite interesting, with a tremendous twist revealed about two-thirds of the way through. It's only sci-fi in as much as the basic concept (which underlies the aforementioned twist) relies upon some currently-non-existent science and technology. Apart from that, it's set in the present age, and there's no spaceships or aliens.

I got interested by reading quotes and reviews saying this was some masterful next-generation combination of the best of Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut. A Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse Five combo? - Sign me up! Sorry, but not even close to that description. Meanders all over the place, loses narrative threads, and has gaping logical holes that even cheesy sci-fi tries harder to plug. It tries to convey some sadness and melodrama that just comes off as silly in the overall silly context of ninjas and ghosts. It might have been a little more fun if it just embraced the silliness all the way and skipped trying to wrench our hearts with its smattering of emotional loss and melodrama. I was hoping for a lot better, but this book definitely does not have the "stuff" of Vonnegut or Heller.

This is a post-apocalypse-type novel. Very creative and original treatment of the post-apocalypse meme. The story is told in first person and, the main character's inner thoughts are communicated very well. Although, it's not a comedy by any stretch of the imagination, this book is full of great humor. I laughed out loud several times. Of course what some people think is funny, others don't, but I think Harkaway's use of language and juxtaposition is very witty. It is also appropriate: when the main character is at his lowest point, the humor recedes, but as he recovers, so do the funny bits.The plot line is twisty. The story starts out in the present, but then there's a long flashback where we learn a lot of the main character's (the narrator's) personal history. We synch back up w/ the initial scene and the story moves ahead from there, but now we have a much better grasp of the world and the way the main character seems to fit into it. Also, some things mentioned casually throughout the story turn out to be important later, but some of these are less that obvious. I enjoyed that. It's fun to pay attention to what's happening w/o being bludgeoned by the author.There are many secondary characters, and they're interesting and mostly believable. The pacing is very good. Harkaway's descriptions of the world and what's happened to it are detailed enough to yield a strong impression w/o being burdensome. All-in-all, I really liked this book.

World War 3 has been fought using quantum weaponry that has disturbed the fabric of space time, etc., etc., and shall we say profoundly affected our unnamed protagonist. The Gone Away World is a generally successful stapling-together of the unreliable narrator trope with a kinder, gentler, Fight Club and an anti-corporate-think diatribe in an apocalypse-framed sometimes-war-movie setting, with literary aspirations that make it almost an instant classic. The writing style seems for most of the book kind of nervously verbose, and later we better understand the hero’s reference frame and why his recollections are so desperately eidetic. The ending seems a bit rushed and could have been a bit more fleshed out. But overall the pacing and construction of the story and denouements is fairly well matched to the author’s yarn-spinning powers. I will check out his next work.

I bought this book because I wanted to know the meaning of the symbol on my yoga mat. I think we should all understand the symbols we display on our bodies, clothing, homes, etc...but I digress.This book is a colorful and interesting collection of stories about Ganesha. I am only 1/3 through it, but I have learned a great deal. For instance there is no learning of just one Hindu God. The lessons to the reader are conveyed through the interaction of many Gods, and people. I have thoroughly enjoyed the book so far, and I would definitely want to learn about other Indian Gods if similar books were available. Now, every time I look at the head of my yoga mat, it has such great meaning.Full disclosure: I am a westerner who enjoys being exposed to other cultures. My review is meant to be helpful to others with a similar background. I am sure people raised as Hindu's may have a different view of this book. I am grateful to have found it.

This is the most delightful book of stories about Ganesha! Every one makes me smile. Highly recommended. (Theoretically, the book is for children. But I am reading it with an adult who is learning English as a second language - and both my student and I have enjoyed every single story.)

I used this book as a source for a research that I had to do, and I fell in love with it. The stories are beautiful and Ganesh is one of my favorite Hindu deities. I can't wait to read this to my kids for their bedtime story :)

I bought this book for my niece and nephew, but before I gave it to them I read it too. It brought back the stories of Ganesha I had been told in childhood, and made me smile at them again. It may not have the pictures of "How Ganesha got his elephant head", which I bought for another child, but the it has more stories of this altogether charming lovable god.

I really enjoyed how short the stories were. They manage to entertain but not bore the children with too much length. It wets their appetite for Ganesha enough that they want more. I also enjoyed the black & white images. They were whimsical and introduced the other Gods in a very "human"? manner. :D

The Broken Tusk tells seventeen different stories of Ganesha in easy reader format for second grade and up. The stories also lend themselves well to the read-aloud format for younger children. Many of my old favorites are here including the ones about how Ganesha got his elephant head and about how he made a "pradakshina" around his parents, into a trip around the world. Some might find the versions of certain stories here to be different from what they know. That is understandable considering how many of these have been passed along strictly through oral tradition. There are also some rarer stories here including one borrowed from Buddhist folklore.Krishnaswami has done a thorough professional job with this one. She has prefaced the book with a brief introduction to Hindu mythology and to the god Ganesha himself. Also complementing the stories are a glossary of terms, a list of characters (kids would appreciate that!), a list of other names for Ganesha, and a pronunciation guide.Krishnaswami finishes every story she narrates with a line or two that ties the legend to modern day reality. For example, after the story about Ganesha's head, Krishnaswami explains that in Indian (especially South Indian) temples today, sometimes elephants are fed and maintained reverentially. These acts, Krishnaswami explains, probably acknowledge the sacrifice made by the elephant in the original story. Small explanations like these place the stories in context, a service that I think is especially useful. The last word belongs to the wonderful old-world illustrations by Maniam Selven that complement the stories wonderfully.With this book, Krishnaswami demonstrates that she is not only a gifted storyteller, she is also a thorough one. The Broken Tusk will get an enthusiastic nod not only from the young reading set but also from their grateful parents. This book is as charming as the elephant god himself!

This book was written to be a children's book, but in fact it is probably the best collection of storytelling about the mythology of Ganesha that that I have ever found. The Hindu parthenon's mythology has always been passed along from generation to generation by tales of the Deity in it's various forms. This exquisite book has all the well-known tales of Ganesh as well as some obscure stories and some tales from other lands and religions. I don't have kids but do delight in the simple stories that bring the attributes of Ganesha into light in simple, vivid parables of joy. If you love Ganesh like I love Ganesh, then this is a 'must have.' If you are a storyteller, this is the book that will be a Ganesh guide. If you just want a book that you can read story's in occasionally just to smile and search for meaning in, again, here'tis. This is a delightful exposing of this beloved Deity into Western civilization in our time. GAM.

Love this book. I still use this book as a reference sometimes. There are so many great pictures and descriptions of everything you need!

Easy reading, and includes a lot of great photos. Back of the book questions are very helpful in studying.

Great, clear images of pathology. A good one to keep once school is over.

Aesthetically, the book is great. I am not fond of the length of the chapters, however. It makes it difficult to focus on a specific section and the amount of information is overwhelming.

Excellent text with clear explanations and great pictures. Has review questions and a synopsis at the end of each chapter that really helps students study.

Easy to understand, great pictures of different pathology and radiography!

I've been in the field for 30 years and I still get this book in newer editions every so often. It's a must-have reference for anyone in the dental field.
