When I was in college we did a study about how nursing students learn best, everyone has their own learning techniques and you just have to find yours! This book will teach you how to improve your learnings, different techniques and the basics, if you're more on reading- this book will also give you tips on doing it effectively, and so goes to writing, memorizing and even cramming! This is very helpful specially if you're just trying to identify your learning technique. However there are some areas that I don't share the same views with like the myth #1, but still this book is very helpful. I would tell my friends to read this book, it would definitely help them learn effectively! ☺️

My memory has always been a little bit spotty. I can study well enough for tests but it's remembering things that I don't study or rehearse that has always been difficult. As I learned, there is a little bit of a gap between my working memory and my long term memory. Tough deal but ultimately it's gotten far better with some of the techniques in the book. They aren't directly about memory itself but the way they are structured helps comprehension and retention.Learn Like Einstein is a great tool and is the sort of book that we should receive when we're in elementary school so we develop good habits and work ethics. This would really have helped my grades earlier but hey, it's never too late.

Nothing earth shattering, just some solid suggestions to improve learning and retention. The biggest takeaway is that learning, comprehending, and retaining is hard work. There is no magic. One must interact with, analyze, practice, and ruminate over the material. It takes time and effort. Be aware that there is no discussion of using the phonetic number system, memory palaces, or stories as aids to memorization, as in similar books. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not the book's focus.

Easy to read, logical, and interesting. Makes you think twice, which of course causes analysis paralysis, but in a good way and focusing on the smart factors instead of just twiddling your thumbs.Great look into social and applied psychology. Hope the author writes more like this.

Great easy read. Really did exactly what it said it would, improved my understanding of how to learn and retain information better. I would recommend this book to anyone looking into learning more about learning.

Looking up increase my mental horsepower and by jove I've done it. Well written book with clear tips to learn and comprehend knowledge better. If only I had this in graduate school, or in elementary school actually.

While I was aware of several of the methods he used in the book, I liked the way the author linked the methods together and also the reasons each method worked(best?) and how to apply the methods to most situations.

I really loved the flow and easy going idea of this book. Although much of it is common knowledge the book subjects the reader to tips and tricks that really help one improve.

Just like the Visual Literacy book, this text also provides enough justification to use graphic novels in the classroom. Each chapter provides lessons or suggested activities that can be done in the classroom with prominent graphic novels. Examples of these are Beowulf, Persepolis, Fagin the Jew, Spiderman, among others. It is very important for the editor as well for the contributors to this text to connect the graphic novel with curriculum endorsed texts. for example, Fagin the Jew is connected to Oliver Twist, and X-Men adventure with Dante's Inferno, or The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom with Scarlett Letter. In this manner, the authors constantly persuade us that many of these graphic novels are as valid in the classroom as any of the canonical texts. Convince schools of the value of graphic novels is Mr. Bucky Carter's crusade. By the way, I bought the Beowulf graphic stroy with the intention of using it in the classroom thanks to this book. I highly recommend it.

I bought this book because the title caught my attention. I was intrigued with the idea of using graphic novels to build literacy. Reading this book was like awakening from a deep sleep, completely refreshed and energized to face the day ahead. The articles were well presented, and offered encouragement to any teacher who is willing to take on the task of using graphic novels as a teaching aide. The book is not a "how to" book, as one reviewer indicated. What it does is to share experiences of teachers who implemented aspects of teaching graphic novels in their classrooms, what they did and how it turned out. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the articles and didn't scan through for pertinent facts as I normally would have. "Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels Page by Page, Panel by Panel" is a must read for all high school language arts teachers.

I'm teaching Persepolis to an honors class, and I was hoping to find some concrete examples of how to teach a graphic novel. This book has some interesting articles about using graphic novels and the efficacy of incorporating them into the program, but it is not a "how to" in any sense. These articles would be great for someone researching graphic novels in the classroom - it would be better if it included some generalized elements of graphic novels and even some lessons that could be used.

"Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels" is an innovative collection of essays by various professors and school teachers which shows the value of graphic novels and comic books in the classroom. In an era when many schools struggle to teach their students the basic skills necessary to survive and thrive in society, the writers in this book offer an alternative and entertaining way to teach literacy, writing skills, and social awareness. English teachers from middle school through high school would do well to read these essays for some great ideas on capturing their students' attention and getting them to learn the power of the English language.The book is edited by James Bucky Carter, a professor at the University of Texas El Paso who earned his Ph.D. in English education at the University of Virginia. In addition to the introduction, Carter also wrote two essays in the book. One lays out a possible lesson plan for teaching "The Scarlett Letter" using a graphic novel for comparison. In the other essay, Carter shows teachers how to use the "Spider-Man" comic book series to improve students' writing skills and help them find their own voice in their writings. Among other topics covered in the book, the various authors demonstrate a creative pairing between Dante's "Inferno" and "The X-Men" comic book series, the uses of the graphic novel in teaching a complex text such as "Beowulf," and using graphic novels to tackle the inherent antisemitism in the works of Charles Dickens.While this book does not necessarily claim to offer the best techniques for teaching English (Carter acknowledges that adolescent boys might find some comic books more interesting than adolescent girls, for example), it makes great strides toward establishing the legitimacy of comic books and graphic novels in teaching. After reading "Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels," teachers should come away with some different and new methods to employ in their classroom, backed up by research and results. For those teachers having trouble getting through to their students, I recommend reading this book to see if graphic novels may be a solution.

Music has always been a part of my life. My father played the guitar and my Mom, brothers and I were always singing one tune or another. Later, I married a musician and continue to rock to oldies and new tunes. I believe music lifts the heart and strongly encourage young people to learn an instrument, sing in a choir or at the very least, listen and experience all types of music. Rockabet gets the young ones started early in the wonderful world of Rock n Roll while teaching them the alphabet at the same time. The illustrations are awesome and the author takes you on a journey through years of rock. Buy a copy for all the future musicians in your life.

Seriously, what a fun picture book! My kids didn't know most of the bands but we'd listen to snippets of songs from each one mentioned and it was a trip down memory lane for those of us who grew up listening to the radio. Awesome!

I purchased two copies of Rockabet for Christmas. One for my niece and the other for my boyfriend's nephew. On both occasions, the adults were just as excited about the book as the kids! They loved the GNR reference, "They've got fun and games." And the picture of Elvis munching on his cookie gave everybody a giggle.Rockabet rocks!

This is an adorable book, particularly for adults who were "metal heads" in their youth. I look forward to keeping this one on my "gift list" for giving this in the future.

I loved the book. I thought it was so creative using all the groups and their song titles. It brings back some good memories about classic Rock groups!. The graphics are great as well. This book could easily be used in an early elementary music class.

Our children LOVED this book! They STILL love to read it, at 7 and 8 years old. What a great way to combine the world of popular music and learning! As parents, we love to read it with the kids! Thanks Kelly Polark!

Cute and brings back so many rock memories! Great to read to kids and teach them what the good groups were! The illustration was colorful and eye catching.

Kids will delight in the fun rhymes while learning the alphabet and adults will love a walk down rock and roll lane... transported to memories and sentiments of classic music and the good ole days. The artwork is wonderful - cute for the kids and revealing just enough for adults to recognize the icons of rock and roll history.It is a must have for any parent and grandparent who yearns to teach their children about the classics - and maybe share a few "appropriate" stories of their youth along the way.

Intially, I was skeptical about this book. All of the reviews seemed to be from people who knew the author or are professional copywriters, and they were a little too persuasive and polished. "This is the best fundraising book ever," etc.I'm 20something fundraiser getting a crash course in the science of fundraising. I've never met the author nor do I plan do. I'm in online fundraising, but these concepts translate easily.This book is a great summary of the concepts I've discovered over the last 6-8 months about effective fundraising. It's the sort of book that gives you a foundation. It would would be great to come back to before you write copy or use it to get everyone in your organization on the same page about the purpose of your fundraising communications.I finished my copy last night and passed it off to my colleague this morning. I want my supervisor and management team to read it. Soon.The book reads like great fundraising copy, which means it's a fast read. It's entertaining and uses stories. I sat down last night to read a chapter, and was 34 pages into the book before I looked up.This book's strength is how quickly it engages the reader and distills the key points of great fundraising writing. It would be an excellent book to give to anyone who writes, reviews or edits your fundraising communications.

This brief paperback is packed with gems. Wisdom. Inspiration. Creativity. More importantly it is direct and honest. $22 for this little paperback, you gotta be kidding! I assure you. This quick read is worth your money, your organizations budget and your precious time.Every volunteer, committee or board member is certain they know how to raise money. Worse yet, your executive director, president, Dean, board chair knows best. Early on in the book, Mr. Brooks equips you to work with self-appointed well meaning philanthropy geniuses. He says, “Fundraising is a profession. It has a body of knowledge and a set of principles. It’s not a jerry-rigged monstrosity created by amateurs and volunteers. It’s not a dumbed-down version of commercial marketing.”From here he launches into reminders of what you do and why. What raises money and what does not? The topic is direct mail. But reminders abound of the importance of the case, the donor, the solicitation and stories. You find yourself eager to start the next appeal letter. Or just to sit down and read the book again to bathe in the supportive and familiar and ponder at the permission Brooks gives to lighten up and be real. To grin from ear to ear as he debunks all the shared myths. Has he been in the hallways of your workplace! Wow, you are not alone and defenseless.You will not be surprised that donors are your heroes. But do you know to ask 6 or 7 times, make the letter long and ignore grammar? That the PS always gets read? This book is not espousing fundraising art or philosophy. It is a pragmatic unabashed guide about what you need to do to raise money. Veteran Brooks clearly outlines pragmatic tested tactics that have brought in gifts over time. You may not like them or believe them, but you must use them because they work.You will find yourself smiling and seeing the faces of your cohorts. Brooks has worked with these same team members who constantly offer you their unfounded comments, criticism and input. While the fundamental truths resound with you. You also get affirmation even scientific proof of what you know from listening to donors and testing letters yourself. Give this little expose to those who rewrite and edit your appeal, or take it home to their English major or literature scholar. Agree that you don’t have to agree, but that you want to raise money.The tenets are simple, but using all the wisdom is not easy. This book will put you to work. I had to completely change my approach to writing fundraising materials for a small NFP. As a former ad agency copywriter, this book provided me with a set of best practices to follow—and they work.Asking for money for a charity is a whole different ball game than writing an ad or writing for a website or blog. You have to change your style accordingly. This book will tell you how. I didn't want to re-invent the wheel and our small organization can't afford to learn through trial and error. Donations are our lifeblood. This book quickly brought me up to speed, as well as the director and other board members.It's a quick read, but packed with excellent information. While an excellent reminder for an 'old pro' like me, it is an essential guide for those just starting out in the field and is an important resource for volunteers and board members. Jeff Brooks presents the usual counter-intuitive writing strategies that make for compelling and effective donor communications in a way that any pro or layperson can grasp. In other words, he practices what he preaches! So start your development and PR/marketing subcommittees off with this book, then feel free to move on to other excellent, more in-depth offerings by Mal Warwick, Tom Ahern, and others. I just ordered 6 copies for volunteers and board members to read. After reading this little gem, I'm sure you will do the same!

My workplace writing students are reading this book in conjunction with their service learning projects. It's an easy read, and it has a wealth of great information that the standard business writing textbook doesn't cover. Brooks has a ton of real-world experience to share. If you want to write well for nonprofits, you should give this book a shot. There's absolutely nothing "commonsense" about it--that's the cool thing about this book--much of what Brooks teaches us is that what seems like good writing in other contexts is actually completely ineffective for nonprofit fundraising.

When I first got it, I picked this book up and opened it at random. The very first section that I looked at was regarding the fact that the body changes the places where it stores fat as you age. I don't know about you other ladies out there, but it was extremely relevant to me. No wonder my belly has started to stick out, even though my exercise and lifestyle has stayed the same.The book covers not just the specific symptoms of menopause and perimenopause but it also includes an overall look at the changes in the female body during the years from about 35 to about 50. And apparently, there are a lot of them that I had no clue about.I wish someone had given me this book three years ago. It would have been nice to have a warning about what to expect and what to look out for as my hormones are starting to go whacko.It's weird that we don't find these things out until we've been struggling with our symptoms for months or years.If you know a woman in her early 30s, give her this book now. Not for her birthday or some other occasion. Just as an everyday gift. After all, you don't want to get punched in the eye. "Are you suggesting I have violent mood swings? I'll show you a violent swing..."But seriously, this is good information to have BEFORE you need it. Also, it wouldn't hurt if husbands read it too. It has lots of good information about WHY your woman is suddenly acting like a lunatic half the time.

As an Labor and Delivery nurse, I have to get Continuing Educational Units for my license. This book was the text book for a at-home course. Anyway, knowing that I have some of the symptoms of perimenopause, I wanted to learn more about what I was going through and where it was all going. This book did all that and more.Excellently written for the lay person or professional. Covers symptoms, pathophysiology (what is going on in the body), what to expect, what to do about it.....and maybe what other physical problems may be occurring that are not related to perimenopause and could be misdiagnosed.The book made me giggle several times...."oh yeah, I am doing that...oh and that, too. You learn that you are not losing your mind, that it is all a natural process and YES, you can do something about it to ease the journey.Actually, the woman's body is pretty amazing. It goes through so many changes throughout life. Sure keeps life interesting...grin.So now I am purchasing the book for my friend...who ran out of the restaurant/bar the other night having a hot flash...she worries that something is not right...grin.I am sure this will help.

This book was a very good primer about what to expect in perimenopause but did not really enlighten me much more than other articles or pieces I'd read. I would say it would be best for someone who has very little, if any familiarity, with what the menstrual cycle means (in terms of the hormones involved and how they change throughout the cycle, and as you age. It had some good basic info but probably needs to be revised to reflect current info since the publishing date is a bit old.

This is a great book for those of us in perimenopause. It answers sooo many questions. My only complaint is that the author seems to be a bit full of herself and that gets to old - fast.

Wonderful read for women experiencing perimenopause. Info on BHRT and supplements was very valuable!

Like every bit of it,all chapters touch the most important issues and give ways how to deal with all the symptoms .

Have read alot of good info, so glad I got the book.. would recomend it to others.
