Review

"This book became an instant classic in the literature of professional operations. In this third edition, David Mann updates and expands his teaching with five additional years of valuable experience and expertise derived from his very active, multi-industry consultancy. I have benefitted greatly from his writing and wholeheartedly recommend this book to be top-of-the desk of any serious Lean practitioner or performance transformation leader."― Raymond C. Floyd, two-time Shingo Prize Winner, President and CEO, Plasco Energy Group "David Mann builds substantially on his seminal work on the Lean management system. The book is full of new insight and polishes the most important ideas about Lean management. The new chapter on engaging executive leadership alone is worth the price of the book."― Peter Ward, Richard M. Ross Professor and Chair, Department of Management Science, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University"This book has long been my ‘go-to’ guide on Lean management practices that help create a culture of continuous improvement and excellence. I have recommended the book to countless healthcare leaders who rave about how helpful it is in translating Lean principles into daily management behaviors. The healthcare examples make it even more relevant as a must read for any hospital leader who aims to move beyond Lean tools.." --- Mark Graban, author of Lean Hospitals, co-author of Healthcare Kaizen and The Executive Guide to Healthcare Kaizen"As more companies outside the manufacturing sector pursue Lean transformations, Creating a Lean Culture is as critical a resource as ever. Breaking down silos and navigating tricky internecine politics remain a momentous challenge, and Mann’s case-based insights are an invaluable tool."― Peg Pennington, Executive Director, Center for Operational Excellence, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University"David has once again taken the topics that trip us up and put structure and guidance around them. His new work on executive involvement is worth the price of the book all by itself. Many of us have struggled with this topic and David provides a path to success."― Elizabeth M. King, Vice President Organizational Effectiveness, ESCO Corporation

This is a text book for getting Lean off the ground. Instruction is given for changes needed at all levels of the organization. Lean isn't something to be imposed on operators while managers continue to get production status reports in an office on a computer screen. While much about Gemba walking teaches to "go and see," Mann provides rating criteria that help the team learn what to look at/for. Then, keep it in arm's reach. Every time I re-read this, I see something new or in a new way.Not a fan of the Kindle edition as the TOC doesn't link to chapters and appendices. Get the paper copy and tape flags.

Excellent companion book to the rest of your lean references. Getting at making lean habits and growing cultures at each level of the team and really understanding your work. I also have the previous version. This is similar in content but has improvements in terms of self study questions and a shift in focus to the other levels of leadership and their role/expectations and how to manage up/down.

Love the book. I recommend it.

Great book that gives a great amount of information on lean implementation. Having a manager who used some Lean principles, I became interested in Lean. Through reading this book, I not only understood the Lean principles we had in place in my workplace, but also discovered our many shortcomings and how to overcome them.

Excellent book.

Best book I have read to help you implement Lean in your organization.

Great book for learning about deploying a Management System to support Lean Thinking. This is the third edition. I re-read it every year and never fail to pick up new ideas that can be implemented on our organization.Jim Winn

Review

From the reviews:“This is a welcome addition to the literature … . chapters discuss the history, discovery, and evolution of planetary nebulae. … these are well written and give a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the current ideas on planetary-nebula formation. … descriptions are largely accurate and the photographs have generally reproduced well. … A useful and comprehensive list of further reading covering many aspects of planetary nebulae is included … . this is a useful guide to observing these ‘butterflies’ of the night sky … .” (Stewart Moore, The Observatory, Vol. 132 (1231), December, 2012)“This book follows the standard pattern of the ‘… and how to Observe Them’ series with a brief section on the discovery of planetary nebulae followed by a section on how they form. … The book contains two chapters on observing techniques. … The book ends with a bibliography that is fairly extensive … . Planetary nebulae are some of the most popular objects that deep sky observers look for so … this is a decent first guide to observing these fascinating objects.” (Owen Brazell, Astronomy Now, August, 2012)

From the Back Cover

Astronomers' Observing Guides provide up-to-date information for amateur astronomers who want to know all about what is it they are observing. This is the basis of the first part of the book. The second part details observing techniques for practical astronomers, working with a range of different instruments.Planetary Nebulae and How to Observe Them is intended for amateur astronomers who want to concentrate on one of the most beautiful classes of astronomical objects in the sky. This book will help the observer to see these celestial phenomena using telescopes of various apertures. As a Sun-like star reaches the end of its life, its hydrogen fuel starts to run out. It collapses until helium nuclei begin nuclear fusion, whereupon the star begins to pulsate, each pulsation throwing off a layer of the star's atmosphere. Eventually the atmosphere has all been ejected as an expanding cloud of gas, the star's core is exposed and ultraviolet photons cause the shell of gas to glow brilliantly - that's planetary nebula.Topics covered in this book include the astrophysical makeup of planetary nebulae, a history of their discovery, classification and description, telescopes, filters and observing techniques - in short everything anyone would need to observe planetary nebulae.A special feature of this book is the inclusion of over 100 nebulae in our Milky Way Galaxy personally observed by the author using telescopes of various sizes, enabling readers to make up their own observing program or to follow the authors program. The guide also includes photographs by the author of each object for ease of identification along with their celestial coordinates, magnitudes and other pertinent information. Here is a volume that should be a welcome addition to any amateur astronomer's personal library, observing course, or school. With it in hand, you can begin sampling right away some of the most captivating objects in the sky.body>

I am looking forward to reading it.

This book fills a void of information for amateur astronomers interested in observing planetary nebulae. The most helpful part of the book is a section containing a picture, good observational information and charts for locating each of over a hundred of the more observable planetary nebulae. Although some of the charts seem a bit confusing the book is very helpful in determining objects to try to observe.

Looks like an ordinary home-made print-out.

Great books on PNs. Nothing is better. Keep in my car to read when crossing the bridge.

As a recently confirmed member of the Episcopalian Communion, I was quite happy to find this new volume from The Greenwood Press series on denominational studies, an excellent successor to the American Church History Series (1893-1897). While there have been innumerable works on American religious denominations in the interim (including the constantly revised "Handbook of Denominations in the United States"), this series allows for a deeper and richer look into the history, evolution and specific theologies and practices of the major American denominations."The Episcopalians" is divided into two parts, namely a history of American Anglicanism/Episcopalianism by chronology, and a biographical history of the major leaders and luminaries in the Church's North American odyssey. Beginning with the antecedent Church of England and its relationship with the expanding Colonial Church, the story progresses through the tribulations of the Anglican Communion during and following the American Revolution, when the inevitable "split" from the Mother Church nearly destroyed the well-established (but "Bishopless") American parishes. With the final post-Independence reorganization of the church into the present day Episcopal Church in America, there followed the trauma of the Civil War, with its attendant near-schism over the issue of slavery (which, in contradistinction to other major American denominations, actually never occurred). History does not paint a very flattering picture of the Southern Churches, many of which were strong opponents of Emancipation; however, the Church survived, albeit wounded and suffering, as was the Nation. Excellent chapters on the post-war social and intellectual/theological changes and conflicts follow, including the church's involvement in Missionary work, the Anglo-Catholic ("Oxford Movement") controversy, the exodus from city to suburbs following World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, ecumenenism, and ending with an excellent conclusion that clearly illuminates the issues facing the American church today (women in the clergy, the Charismatic Movement begun in the 1970's, homosexual lay and clerical conflicts down to the present controversy over the ordination of a Gay Bishop in New Hampshire). There follow excellent biographical sketches of essentially all of the main players and luminaries who have influenced and guided the ever-evolving American Episcopalian Church within the broader worldwide Anglican Communion. These were especially valuable to me, as many individuals who were pivotal in the life of the Church are today little known or forgotten, and deserve their rightful place in the story of the church that was, at least in America's Revolutionary beginnings, the closest thing to a "National Church" that our Country has ever had, and which clearly played a pivotal role in the lives of many of our Founding Fathers and their historic roles in creating the beginning of "The Great Experiment" of American Democracy.I highly recommend this book to any and all, Episcopalians or otherwise, as an excellent picture and example of the relationship between America's secular and religious histories, which are clearly deeply and irrevocably intertwined in our Country's past, present and future.

Very interesting!

An interesting history of the Episcopal Church; a trifle light on the religious aspects. Useful and interesting mini-biographies fill in some of the personalities in the church.

This was a well written and complete summary of the history of the Episcopal Church. It was a good refresher for me, especially the early history.

This is only an average book. It really only spends a few pages on recent history. Half the book is about historical people associated with the church.

How do you characterize a denomination that is doctrinally indifferent, liturgically lush, culturally elite, politically conservative, socially liberal, and which Thomas Merton once described as little more than an "atmosphere"? Hein and Schattuck have risen to the challenge with this lively, well-balanced and readable book. Part One is a history, beginning with the denomination's Anglican origins in Henry VIII's divorce and tracing its American development up through its election of an openly gay bishop in 2003. It is never quite made clear whether this influential denomination, which has furnished a disproportionately large share of American political and cultural leadership, is actually leading or merely blowing with the wind. This question arises not only with the denomination's vanguard positions on contraception, civil rights, ordination of women and gays, but in its perennial reluctance to address the difficult issues attendant to its Anglican origins, such as William Cobbett addresses in his history of the Reformation in England. Part Two, the largest part of the book, offers a stunning list of biographical profiles, including Robert E. Lee, J.P. Morgan, George Whitefield, and many less-known churchmen, women leaders, and missionaries. Recommended for general readers. Despite one or two historical reservations, a darn good read.

Absolutely amazing.

A WOMANIST PERSPECTIVE ON THE THEOLOGICAL MEANING OF CHRISTKelly Brown Douglas is Professor of Religion at Goucher College, and is also an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church. She formerly taught theology at Brown University. She is also the author of Stand Your Ground: Black Bodies and the Justice of God,Sexuality and the Black Church: A Womanist Perspective,Black Bodies and the Black Church: A Blues Slant, and What's Faith Got to Do With It?: Black Bodies/Christian Souls. She wrote in the very helpful Introduction to this 1994 book, “Although Jesus’ ethnicity and dark-skinned complexion are certainly important aspects of Christ’s blackness, to call Christ Black points to more than simply ancestry or biological characteristics. Throughout Black religious history, the Blackness of Christ has had significant theological implications.” (Pg. 1)She continues, “no persons to date have more fully explored the meaning of Christ’s Blackness than have Black theologians. They have attempted to define the Black Christ in terms of both Christ’s color as well as relationship to Black people’s struggle. At the same time, their careful examinations of what it means for Christ to be Black community struggling against more than just White racism. Many of these limitations are evidenced in Black churches’ responses to the various challenges of a changing Black community… they have understood that Christ was against White racism and for Black freedom. This Christ has empowered Black Christians and Black churches to be prophetic in relation to issues of race in America… [Yet] Black churches have appeared ill prepared to respond to concerns that go beyond race.” (Pg. 3-4)She goes on, “In part, the Black church’s inability to respond to the complex issues of class, gender, and sexuality is tied to the way in which Christ’s Blackness has been defined… The Black church leaders who want to take down images of White Christs in their churches are right: a blond-haired, blue-eyed Christ does not empower or nurture self-esteem for Black people… It serves t remind many Black people of those who have come to personify White racism… In essence, the centrality of White Christs in Black churches potentially alienates significant segments of the Black community… A defining assumption of this book is that to call Christ 'Black' suggests something about both Christ's appearance and actions. Such a Christ signifies ... that Christ is intimately involved in the Black struggle 'to make do and do better,' as well as the need for Black people to see themselves in Christ.” (Pg. 5)She concludes the Introduction, “I do not intend to provide a definitive answer concerning Christ's meaning for Black people as they struggle for a better life. My hope is that in telling the story of the Black Christ from a womanist perspective, I can contribute in moving us all closer to appreciating Christ's presence in Black lives as well as understanding the radical challenge that Christ gives to all Christians.” (Pg. 8)She suggests, “(A) comprehensive understanding of the Black Christ must at least involve both Christ’s color and relationship to the Black struggle for freedom… different aspects of Christ’s Blackness were highlighted from time to time throughout Black history. In this regard, the roots of the Black Christ can be traced to the ‘sacred time’ of slavery. During slavery the Black Christ emerged in contradistinction to the oppressive White Christ… a number of slaves found a way to fight for freedom without surrendering their Christianity. As slaveholding Christianity and slave Christianity emerged and confronted each other, so too did White and Black Christs.” (Pg. 10)She observes, “The slaves forged an interpretation of Christianity that focused on Jesus’ ministry to the oppressed, as well as the crucifixion and resurrection within the context of that ministry… The Black Christ was the presence of Jesus in slave lives. He was for the slave a fellow sufferer, a confidant, a provider, and a liberator.” (Pg. 24)She notes that Malcolm X “realized the blasphemy involved in Black people’s worshiping a Christ who looked just like the White people who oppressed and terrorized them. Malcolm X poignantly observed that while religions of other people made them proud of who they were, Christianity ‘was designed to make [black people] feel inferior.’… Malcolm X was clear that Black peoples' loyalty to a White Christ was a betrayal of their own Black heritage, Black culture, and was a severe impediment to their freedom.” (Pg. 46-47)She summarizes, “what did the Black Christ mean for a black people in struggle against White racist oppression?... to call Christ Black indicated that Christ was for Black freedom and against White oppression… Black theologians… made it clear that freedom-seeking Black people did not have to say, ‘ To H_ll with Christianity and its Jesus.’ Declaring that Christ was Black let it be known that Christ had profound meaning for a people determined to be free and proud of their Blackness." (Pg. 77-77)She also admits, “Not one of the three versions of the Black Christ acknowledged the presence or role of Black women in the Black community's struggle for dignity and freedom. Perhaps if they had done so, some of the previously mentioned limitations could have been avoided.” (Pg. 88) Later, she adds, “It should be noted, however, that it is not just the failure of Black theology that has compelled the development of a womanist approach to Christ. Feminist theology has als contributed to this development.” (Pg. 93)She explains, “While the Black Christ of Black theology does not signal an appreciation of Black women’s experience, a womanist understanding of the Blackness of Christ begins with the Black woman’s story of struggle. This portrayal of Christ reflects at least two aspects of that story: the multidimensionality of Black women’s oppression and their determined efforts to survive and be free from that oppression. Specifically, a womanist portrayal of Christ confronts Black women's struggles within the wider society as well as within the Black community. It also affirms Black women's steadfast faith that God supports them in their fight for survival and freedom.” (Pg. 97)This is a very thought-provoking book, that will be of great interest to anyone studying Womanism, Black Theology, Black Churches, or related subjects.

Christ is black. But appearance is only a piece of it; Christ is black in his solidarity with the Black community in US America, struggling in the face of White racism. Kelly Brown Douglas, in this quick and to-the-point synopsis, re-members the historical origins of the black Christ, his theological development and then asks some critical questions about the black Christ in her own context - now almost fifteen years ago.We enter the history, with Douglas, during the height of slavery in US America. Douglas identifies two types of Christianity that live among both Blacks and Whites in the States at that time. "Slave Christianity" saw Jesus (the Black Christ) as liberator, identifying with the Black community's struggle for health and freedom. "Slaveholding Christianity" justified slavery and made Jesus (the White Christ) into an icon of hope for the future - things would be better in the "bye and bye." The Black Christ, then, as Douglas argues, developed early - if not explicitly - within the imaginations of adherents to "Slave Christianity."During the Civil Rights Struggle and Black Nationalist movements of the sixties and seventies, people like Martin King and Malcolm X propelled concepts of the Black Christ into more explicit - and public - consideration. Culminating in X's claim in a 1963 interview that "Christ wasn't white; Christ was a black man," Black Christianity - like Slave Christianity before it - began, more explicitly, to highlight Christ's connection to the struggle for Black freedom in the context of lived history - disregarding for a time "Slaveholding (White) Christianity's "bye and bye."Forced into action, Douglas claims, by the bold, public assertions of people like King and X about the nature of Black Christianity - and the Black Christ - Black theologians began thinking critically about the color of Christ. By the early seventies, though in differently nuanced ways, three Black theologians - Albert Cleage, James Cone and J. Deotis Roberts - had claimed that, indeed, Christ was black. Cleage thought Jesus was historically a black man. Cone imagined his blackness to lie sufficiently in his struggle with Black people. And Roberts understood his blackness to be a particularizing image among many possibilities of imaging Jesus in the world. But, Kelly Brown Douglas wonders, is Christ's blackness enough. She, along with other womanist scholars, question whether race is the only obstacle on the path toward freedom. She imagines, in the end, that the blackness of Jesus is only one part in the multifaceted struggle which with he identifies. Christ is Black, she affirms, but suggests he's also female, same-sex oriented, economically disadvantaged and so on.Douglas, I think, does a helpful thing in so clearly and concisely presenting the history of the Black Christ. For those who've never imagined the possibility of a black Christ - either White or Black; for those who've been inclined to accept a black Christ, but who lacked the historical precedents to justify it; and for those, too, who've considered the Black Christ a psychological invention of the black consciousness era; Douglas' The Black Christ provides clarifying history, which must (if only by exhibiting the metaphor's historical staying power) be taken seriously. Her elucidation of the Black Christ's origins in US American, Black "Slave Christianity" is particularly helpful, I think, in establishing precedence - and socio-intellectual credibility - for the Black Nationalists' bold claims in the sixties. Douglas' seamless portrayal of the social and intellectual movement, in relation to the Black Christ through history, illustrates a Black Christ that is and has been necessarily central to Christian worship and theology in US American Black communities. The 117 pages of Douglas' The Black Christ tell a remarkably long tale of Black struggle in remarkably few pages. Her work, simply in terms of "brevity" and "breadth" is impressive. Positively, this approach welcomes readers who are looking for a quick, clear history of the topic. But this approach limits what Douglas is able to accomplish. Even as it is, on the one hand, a strength, one of the main problems with the book is its brevity - Douglas doesn't give enough attention to her subject, in general, and her conclusion, in particular. So much of the work she does here begs for further nuance and illustration. I will re-member one of these cases and tease you with the basics of another. First, Douglas too quickly dismisses black, male theologians, in particular J. Deotis Roberts, in their understandings of the Black Christ. Essentially, Douglas ends up saying that the Black Christ - as it has historically (and theologically) been represented - isn't "enough." She understands Christ's solidarity to be not only in terms of blackness, but also in terms of gender, sexual orientation and so on - standing by all oppressed people groups. Similarly, at least in the way Douglas represented him, J. Deotis Roberts considered Christ applicable ("universal") to all kinds of human situations. Speaking in terms of race, but suggestive of other social categories, Roberts writes that like the White Christ or the Red Christ, "the Black Messiah is also the universal word made flesh." Later, in response to internal (Black) critiques that he was acquiescing to the Academy in his assertion of a universal Christ, Roberts said he didn't want Black theologians to make "Jesus a captive of black culture as [they] reject the cultural captivity of Jesus depicted by Euro-Americans." Clearly Roberts was trying to develop an image of Christ, even as Douglas admits, "that was not potentially exclusive or oppressive of others."Despite her recognition of Roberts' attempt to diversify Black understandings of Christ's solidarity, Douglas - in her conclusion - overshadows this nuance to move to her main point. She roundly critiques the work that Black, male theologians have done, highlighting again that "calling Christ Black does not acknowledge that skin color is not the only barrier to Black liberation." To her credit, Douglas exploited what Roberts didn't explicitly say, to make her point more resolutely. Without explicitly recognizing the oppression within the Black community, Christ - as black male, but not as black female or black same-sex oriented - cannot be wholly liberating. Attention should not be diverted from Douglas' point - the Black Christ is not adequate. The Black Christ, though, leaves untold, the degree to which Black, male theologian, especially Roberts, (not to mention feminist women - who Douglas admits "contribute," and then harshly critiques,) contributed to the movement from a solely Black Christ to a more wholly liberating image of Jesus.I have similar concerns - in terms of nuance - with Douglas' attention to Jesus/Christ as icon. Malcolm X hated that the White Christ was hanging in all the churches and that Black people "bowed" to it. Besides calling churches to hang pictures of "heroic" women and men as more appropriate images of Christ in their churches, Douglas does nothing to deal with the profound religious status given to iconography. Jesus - as an historical person (one person, not the "image of Jesus" in others) - will always be an icon. Douglas' dabbling in icon talk begged a more complete exploration of how a diversely identifiable Jesus might be imaged.

Another good read.

This book is so simple, and in its simplicity, transformational. It speaks directly and succinctly to the reader, helping us to identify our life stories, and heal them at last. The information in the early chapters is genius, but one can easily pass it by. I recommend taking your time with this book, and re-reading each chapter as you go along to savor all that it has to teach. This way, you can really understand the process that Maxine Taylor outlines. The simplicity of this book can be so simple that we miss the message, so re-read until you truly get it. I promise you'll be thankful you did. Have pen and paper at the ready to write down the lists that she encourages you to make. For myself, I've benefited greatly from identifying the roles that I've unknowingly agreed to play for my birth family and my ego. Now, I get to be free and authentically me, and this is transformational. The idea that every fight with anyone is a reflection of our dynamic with a birth family member is life-changing. Maxine Taylor says that when someone upsets us, if we can just identify which family member they are showing us, our pain will greatly diminish. The idea in the book of asking yourself a simple question to keep focused on your life purpose has been very instrumental for me as well.I had the pleasure of attending three of Maxine Taylor's healings last year, before I read this book, and I benefited greatly from each one. She spoke specifically to my challenges and dreams, without even knowing me, and provided dramatic revelations. This book is a gift from a very talented and wise healer, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I know that I'll be referring to it many times over the years to reinforce crucial revelations on my path.

Maxine Taylor's MOVE INTO THE MAGIC is "right on". Reading her clients' case histories was enlightening. She kindly and gently guided them out of their past, which they have no need for now, guided them into the present, and then guided them "into the magic" of how their lives will be transformed from now on. The author's compassion, energy and sincerity comes shining through on each page. I am so excited to be putting her techniques into action in my life.

I am looking forward to receiving this book, that was highly recommended by Yvonne Perry, in her very helpful book, "Walk-ins Among Us." I wanted to read Maxine Taylor's book. When It arrives and I get it read, I will expand on my review.

Reading this book was like receiving personal counseling for my own issues and also give valuable advice in which to help others. very insightful. easy to read and understand.

Very uplifting and revealing. A must read for those looking for a revealing look into your past. Takes one slowly toward a calm new you..spiritually .

Maxine Taylor has done it again! A wonderful book that will educate and entertain you at the same time. Buy this book if you would like to learn about a life process that is so necessary! A must have!

I was very disappointed in this book. It was nothing different than what the Law of Attraction (original version) offers or Thinking Positive by N.V. Peale provides. It was bland.

I just completed Maxine Taylor's Move into the Magic and found it to be interesting, insightful, and easy to read. Following the systematic approach to letting go of past commitments was eye opening. By following the guidelines and excerises, I was able to connect with my own personal aspirations and "magic". I would recommend this book for those who are looking to achieve their next step in personal growth.

Deal with it - Most answers with your basic Mac issues can be found on the web - There likely are 5 or 6 youTube videos to explain it or a quick Google search on your issue will send you to a Mac user group which has already dealt with it and will show you the 5 or 6 needed steps to resolve it - So why bother buying a 999 page book which likely you'l never read - Thus the beauty of this book: It gives you a high-level overview of Mohave just enough to make you knowledgeable and, yes, a bit dangerous - without waisting your weekend sifting through a million pages. This book gives you the big picture hence, you won't get lost in academic nuance. I have learned some really cool stuff about Mojave OS that I would not be able to have learned in a 9,999 page book - and if, and when you need to dig deeper just ask Google or Youtube! (And enjoy the money you save on a couple of cups of good coffee!)

Too basic except, perhaps, for a first time user. No technical depth. Based on some of the author's passing comments (usually beginning with "Macs are said to . . ." , I think the author lacks technical depth.

4 AND 1/2 STARSThis collection by hardcore writer Wrath James White is exactly what you expect and it succeeds on every level in every way. It's over before you know it and you will find yourself gritting your teeth, frustrated that it has come to an end so quickly. The stories move at a fast pace and are very different from each other, so you will always be entertained. The writing is easy and smooth, but at times, overly graphic to a point where I found myself laughing out loud, and even texting friends certain passages from the book to try and shock them. That was a lot of fun!Wrath blends horror and eroticism with equal measure in this book, and people not used to extreme stories might want to stay away. However, if you are interested in this subject matter or have prior experience with Wrath in the past (or authors like Edward Lee or Bryan Smith) you will be in hardcore heaven. Highlights for me include, "Like Peyote For Pimps", "Nothing Better To Do", and "After The Cure". I did feel like Deadite Press could have added a few more stories to the collection, but for what is there, it still remains high on my list for a top 10 release in 2011. The cover, by artist Suzzan Blac, is one of the goriest I've seen in years.

Here lies a small collection of very short stories that indeed are pretty graphic. The author doesn't pull his punches when it comes to gore.Unfortunately, there is little beyond the gore in most of these stories. Character development is hit or miss: The hits are a great talent for giving you a real feel for the character(s) using very little (Like Peyote for Pimps, Feeding Time); the misses are where he seemed it wasn't worth bothering (Rottweiler, House Cleaning). This isn't really horror in any traditional sense. Little attention is paid to atmosphere. There's no forboding. It would be better to think of these stories as "gore fiction" rather than horror.Mr. White should also do a little research when a story touches on a subject he's apparantly not very familiar with, which may grate on some readers. For example, in my favorite of this collection, Feeding Time, there are several references to lion anatomy as being "hairy." In under 5 minutes on Google you can find out that a lion's penis is not hairy (OK, I admit, the story made me have to look it up). Also, nor are they huge. And to add insult to injury, although the human mind and body can suprise with their capacity to keep going, ***** SEMI-SPOILER ALERT ***** I strongly doubt our lion-obsessed woman would have been able to do what she did in her final moments, given the fact that she was half-eaten by then. This was certainly worth reading once, with interesting concepts and, of course, blood and guts galore; but all but one or two of these stories would have benefited from being longer. I mean that in the sense that they are genuinely underdeveloped, not that I was simply yearning for more. Then again, that's what reduces this to three stars for me. The stories are simply too brief, almost rushed, and there is great but unfulfilled potential for most of them to show more depth. There isn't a single subplot in the whole collection, mainly because no story leaves room for one, rushing as quickly as possible to the conclusion.More attention to story would have gone a long way with this collection. If it was 200 pages total, it would probably be absolutely awesome.

Like Porno for Psychos is a collection of the sexual macabre in the form of poetry and short fictional anecdotes. Wraith James White’s creative mixture of violence and deviant behavior is absolute reason for exploration and discovery in this fearless imaginative genre. Enjoy a dose of animalistic horrific therapy conducted by Wraith James White, price of session : purchase of book.

With this collection Wrath James White peels back the scabs on modern society to reveal the raw, seeping putrescence underneath. This is not comfort reading or something to unwind with after a stressful day; this is an unflinching portrait of mankind at its lowest, which White bravely and accurately details with painstaking precision. In ten stories and two poems White presents enough murder, necrophilia, sexual extremism, and self-mutilation to reel the mind of the average reader (though it's a safe bet anyone opening this book's beautifully grotesque cover can't be considered "average") with his no-holds-barred, striaght-to-the-gut style. Happy endings are few and far between in the world White depicts, yet he often gives us an understanding of people and places we'd never dare visit on our own.PSYCHOS comes in at a mere 87 pages, though after ingesting the stories within it becomes apparent that the abbreviated page count is an act of mercy (one of the few offered here). The book can be a bitter pill to swallow, but as life often teach us, the most valuable lessons are the most painful.

Like Porno For Psychos lives up to its name with no problem. And that cover? Go ahead and judge the book by it because it's exactly what you're going to get. Erotic horror with some truly gruesome and disgusting stories told in a very descriptive voice.I enjoyed this collection as it was my first from Wrath James White. But my main annoyances were that each story was basically the same. It was either a sexual act that ends in extreme violence or a sexual act that happens because of extreme violence. Most of the stories read like pure exposition, but some of his shorter, flash pieces were standouts. I definently want to read some of his longer work in the future and I'd recommend this to hardcore horror fans, but it's not a favorite.
