Having read Miss Gabriels other 2 books, this one is like the icing on the cake. I followed her from her teen years in Lebanon in her first book "Because They Hate. I saw what she endured in those early years. The next book was "They Must be Stopped took the progression of research along with her real-life experiences to the next level. Her early years she learned English on her own. She saw what the world was like outside her own country that was eventually mostly destroyed. In this book "RISE" she brings it all together and reports that which the mainstream media does not. The average American has no idea the number of attacks they have occurred over the years. This book contains over 680 other sources that are cited throughout the book. I am an amateur researcher/ writer and a conservative and this is what I consider a masterpiece of reporting on a dire situation here in America. I can tell she loves this nation and is trying to warn us of what is transpiring among us. It is a must read in my opinion for any American or future American to be aware of the truth of what is happening in this country.

I cannot emphasize that enough, because the author wrote it at her and her family’s great peril; while giving us the tools to work to solve the problems. I've seen this woman speak on television and watched some of her interviews; she knows FIRST HAND of the real threat to our country and our American way of life that radical Islamic factions pose. This book is definitely worth reading and heeding.... we cannot go through the coming years in this country blind to the threats we face and unprepared for what may happen. In fact, we all need to become educated about the philosophy and ideology behind the thinking of those who would wish to do us harm or eradicate our American heritage. It's really not just the radicals that pose the threat, it's the silent population of those who don't embrace Christianity and Judaism that also are problematic because they will not oppose the forces that may come against us and in fact, they may embrace the enemy without realizing the danger of doing so. It may be a war of attrition that most everyone has no idea has already begun, simply because of immigration and birth rates among the non-Christian populations and cultures inside our country and all across Europe already. It is well written, laid out in a logical manner and what I like best is the number of facts and statistics she shares on key topics regarding the rise of Islam in America. There is the usual self-promotion which is to be expected. Her organization is front and center but that aside, if you are concerned about the direction of America this is a must read.

Brigett Gabriel is a very good writer and she is doing a lot to save the Judeo Christian culture of America. She does a great job of laying our the facts as to what Islam is and what the Islamists are doing around the world. And I support her all the way. The only problem I have is that she basis all her historical "facts" upon the supposition that the media are telling us the truth about 911, the Oklahoma bombing, etc... She needs to delve into the facts that the Muslim Brotherhood, during the Obama years, nearly took over our government. Buy this book and support Act For America. we must stick together and fight this evil plague.

I'm a huge Shakespeare fan and looked forward to this book perhaps shedding some light on some of the murkier aspects of his life. Unfortunately, the "information" provided runs something like: "Elizabethans often wore gloves and, in fact, Shakespeare mentions a glove in Romeo and Juliet: 'O, that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek!'. Given that Will's father also worked with gloves, we can determine that it's very likely that Shakespeare possibly wore gloves at some point in his life."Ugh. After more than a few of Greenblatt's "insightful facts" I had to stop reading. Tedious and frustrating.

I studied Shakespeare as an undergraduate English literature major, taking the two best courses I ever took in college. I think we read close to half of Shakespeare's plays. Over the years I've seen many of his plays performed, always enjoying them. I've moved far away from English literature as a profession, having gone to graduate school in cognitive psychology and ended up now in a school of computer science. But literature is still an interest. Having read Greenblatt's book while on vacation in Hawaii, I've been flooded again with the emotions I've always felt from reading or seeing Shakespeare. While the book has a considerable amount of speculation, I enjoyed that. The documentary record of Shakespeare's life is famously sketchy, so I find intelligent speculation to be warranted. I'm sure his ideas will be reviewed and discussed for years. But he has made, to me at least, Shakespeare an interesting and believable person of his times. I learned a lot about the interesting interconnections in his life, and the possible sources of ideas seen in the plays. I've read many of the less enthusiastic reviews here, but they do not dampen my own enthusiasm for this volume. It is a superb read.

Dr Greenblatt has achieved that very rare success for an author, and particularly for a successful academic, of producing a book that it not only highly informative on an interesting subject, but is also a pure pleasure to read. He is honest in not claiming an excess of knowledge of Shakespeare personally, since there is so very little, but instead presents excellent research into his times, his profession and other significant individuals about whom more is recorded. For one point, I had not realized exactly how much accuracy was contained in Sir Tom Stoppard's Shakespeare in Love, a fictional production if there ever was one. Similarly, the information and commentary on early Reformation England is unusually worthwhile in explaining just how the unique phenomenon of The Bard's work came about. It is very rare that a book including this much information and commentary is so enjoyable to read. I can't recommend it too highly.

Greenblatt has a great idea. There's so little to go on with Shakespeare that biographies have been halting, and even the idea of using biographical information to interpret Shakespeare has been on the edge of taboo. Pick up Bloom's Shakespeare, and you can see the delight at tweaking authority leap off the page when he trots out a chestnut about Marlowe being killed by the Elizabethan CIA. The degree of critical insight through biography and historical context brought Bloom's 800 page book by is dwarfed by a short chapter of WiW.Even better (and this is the true test of an hypothesis), the biographical lodestars brought forth are predictive in works not mentioned. That's sort of a strange claim, but I'm going through it at the moment, so here's the current example - I bet there will be more. One of the main events in the book is WS's relationship with the Earl of Southampton, whom it is affirmed was a patron of WS and the addressee of Venus and Adonis, and some Sonnets (I think that part's affirmed, but the early, non (actually less) sexual ones). ESH was being pushed into a marriage, and he was delaying. WS was supposed to coax him through poetry closer to the marriage, and ended up possibly falling in love with ESH himself. That last bit is more interesting than salient to my point, but nice to have a little scandal. So I'm reading All's Well that Ends Well, and bam! the central action is a courtier that refuses to marry someone the king is commanding him to marry using various delaying tactics, etc. Seems a cartoonish bit of court intrigue in the play, but the real life example is undeniably there in WiW, but unclaimed for AWEW. It's absolutely ridiculous to believe that Shakespeare, unlike all other writers, did not use his life as a primary source for his fiction just because we have so little documentation of it. Greenblatt calls BS on that thought and does everything he can to piece together what's likely and put it on the table.What seems amazing to me is how airtight his suppositions seem. I think that's a combination of knowledge of the time, knowledge of the work, the discretion not to go out too far on a limb, but the courage to make a claim that fits common sense and has explanatory power. If you're considering a Shakespeare dive, I think this is the book you want as a companion. It's a little better if you have some of the plays under your belt, you'll be nodding a lot more. But it's nice to know the man and the time as you're reading at a higher level than the scattered details that critical volumes of the plays will give.

If you prefer to go on Mike's journey via his book without my "giving it away," you may want to skip this.]I really got off on the wrong foot with Science Mike.My first encounter with this book came in a Facebook post promoting a personal appearance by the author at a Christian university, posted by my friend and former professor, biblical scholar Pete Enns. I think it was actually the subtitle of the book ("How I lost my faith and found it again through science") that set off alarms in my BS detector.I assumed FGitW was yet another book of Christian apologetics. As someone who spent 30+ years in deep evangelical faith, including long stints as an officer in several churches and eventually obtaining an MAR degree at a conservative seminary, I was well-versed in apologetic arguments. In fact, similar to Mike, I lost my faith when I realized that none of those apologetics ultimately held up. At best, they functioned as props for believers worried about challenges to their faith, to assuage their cognitive dissonance.That's what I assumed Mike was trying to do. But once I read the book, I realized I was wrong.It turns out Mike has no interest in converting me or anyone like me back to his faith. In part, that's because his current "faith" [SPOILER ALERT!] isn't anything that any "orthodox" Christian believer would recognize as truly Christian. So what is it?Put simply, after two years as an ardent atheist secular humanist, Mike realized that something profound was missing. The missing part was a sense of transcendence, of meaning beyond the purely rational, of inspiration, as it were. But his journey back to that was not really a return to the same faith he had left two years before (which I had assumed it would be from his subtitle).So what "faith" did he come to? That it doesn't really matter if the God of the Bible (and all that comes with that) is "true" in the sense that traditional Christians think of that truth (God an actual, personal, being; Jesus's divinity, atoning death, and physical resurrection; God answering prayer, etc.). What matters (to him) is that the God-concept imprinted in his brain is beneficial and useful to him, and pursuing that God brings him peace and makes him a better person.That's why Mike doesn't care if he converts me. He's perfectly happy if I find the same things without having to pursue any God-concept. In this book, he's sharing his journey and his choices. He never presses for them to be anyone else's. What he does hope to accomplish, though, is to provide a way for those who want to believe (in whatever way) in the Christian God to do so without sacrificing science or ethics.My real reason for giving FGitW five stars, though, is for the surprising, almost brutal, honesty of this book. There is absolutely no attempt by Mike to sugar coat anything. Unlike any "case for faith" book I've ever read, Mike lays out the reasons for skepticism and unbelief clearly, with no attempt whatsoever to explain them away or deny their validity. This was the most shocking and at the same time delightful aspect of the book, and the part that disarmed my initial skepticism toward it.In the end, this book did not change my current belief. I am still an agnostic-atheist (agnostic epistemologically--I embrace uncertainty, and thus the possibility of gods; but atheist in that I find it highly improbable that such gods actually exist as our religions conceive of them). But as I said, converting me was never Mike's aim. What I did gain from this book is a deeper appreciation of the parallel things I now pursue, though I call them by different names than Mike does.

I remember years ago sitting around a campfire talking with some kids I mentored about God and the questions that surround this mystery. One child shared a story about how his church had brought in a creationist to “totally destroy science.” In other words they brought in a man who held very strictly to the biblical teaching of a six day created, 6,000 year old universe. Anything that taught otherwise was to be rejected.I remember sitting through the Religion Program at Florida State University and hearing lecture after lecture that revealed that the Bible didn’t behave the way I had always been taught it did.I remember going through the pains of deconstructing and aimlessly trying to reconstruct my own Christian faith; the painful process of unlearning my spoon-fed theology and seeking deeply to identify the truths about Jesus and God.When you work in ministry, belief is kind of a big deal. Whenever you try to explain, people often push you out or try and conform you back in. But you can’t unlearn certain things. What I’ve been finding in recent years has brought such freshness and beauty to my life. Now imagine that coming to a heartbreaking, life-crumbling realization that there is no God. What would you do? How would you respond to this? Mike’s life has been crafted in a way that robs his search from the venom that comes into the conversation of Science and Faith. In Mike’s atheism he found that there are many Christian claims that simply had no basis for validity when truly observed and thought through. But what happens when you experience God as an atheist? Do you return to all the things you used to believe even when the facts don’t add up? For many believers these “facts” are essential to following Jesus. But what if you can’t unlearn what once led you away from God? No matter how hard you try to make it work? How do you move forward?What Science Mike has done here is what many atheist writers have done before. Mike tells you the story of how he lost God. Mike deconstructs the Christian faith in ways similar to Dawkins, Bart Ehrman, Hitchens. He brings to light the inconsistencies of the faith and he challenges you to process the information. In his search for truth in the midst of mystery, Mike brings each of us to reconstruct our faith through the lenses of science and reason. Not rejecting all that we are learning about our brains and the universe, but bringing it along with us. Mike has created a book that honestly could stand for decades to come as an end to the divisiveness of certain faith vs. scientific arguments. Mike has invited all of us into a holy tension.Mike’s story is beautiful. I laughed so loud I scared those sitting around me at my local Starbucks and I hid in the same corner as I cried my eyes out. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a more honest and purposeful book. His life has been weaved a certain way that allows him to speak from a seemingly “no reason to bullsh–” perspective and I think this book will do great healing for the church. I don’t believe that anyone could walk away from this book without being humbled. Mike shows us a grace-filled way to approach our differences and to be okay with both sides of these discussions. Not to mention, you’ll sound so much smarter knowing the information he loans you so freely!Mike invites us all into the waves of his life, and in them we find God more beautifully than ever.
