This book is definitely adequate enough preparation for the Pennsylvania Real Estate Exam. I am on chapter 3 as of right now and all the material so far does emphasize major parts of the exam. Also, in the end of the book there are practice exams that go over everything you've learned, so the book itself is pretty thorough. Definitely some typos, so I would say a tentative 5 star.

There are many fine, hardworking craftsmen of the written word, and the sum of the parts of their novels are very enjoyable to read, but then there are writers who also possess the skill of an artist. In their novels every word is perfectly chosen and placed in combination with every other word in an inevitability that makes structure disappear, and the whole is much greater than just the sum of its parts. The Gone–Away World by Nick Harkaway is such a work.In it we follow an unnamed protagonist through childhood and college into a proxy “Un-War” in the Elective Theatre, formerly known as the prosperous and peaceful country of Addeh Katir. There he is reunited with his childhood best friend Gonzo. When the enemy launches a chemical attack, our side answers with “the most advanced weapon in the history of warfare,” The Go Away Bomb that disappears the enemy: “We are… feeling a bit superior and waiting for the order to do some more demonstrative world-editing, when our very own Green Sector vanishes from the map… like a sandcastle being washed away by the tide… The same thing is happening everywhere. Not just in the Elective Theatre.”Predictably, the effects are unpredictable and uncontrollable; the tide that ebbs also flows, carrying back a recombinant and deadly genesis of the thoughts, forms, feelings, memories, dreams and nightmares of everything it supposedly erased. Most of humanity has been made “Gone-Away” and the survivors battle desperately: “this is not an attack. It’s an atmosphere.”Protagonist, Gonzo and a ragtag group are rescued by Piper 90 (“love child of a bulldozer and a shopping mall”) which is laying “The Pipe” that contains the anti-stuff, called FOX, which makes the Gone-Away stuff go away, “making a strip of land which is safe to live in.” This is where the remnants of humanity begin to rebuild.​Fast forward a few years and this outfit of roughnecks is hired for a dangerous job of putting out a fire on The Pipe that looks like sabotage. Here the story takes a shocking turn that throws into question the protagonist’s entire history and future, and a horrible secret is found to underlie the system that keeps this strip of the old world, this “Livable Zone,” intact.A rousing dystopian story with a terrific story arc that can be enjoyed on just those terms, The Gone-Away World is also a cautionary tale that confronts the endemic, species-defining stupidity and hidden moral equivocations of human life on Earth. Notwithstanding, Nick Harkaway is fundamentally an optimist, and quite funny; I will definitely be reading more of him. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed Nick Harkaway's writing style in this book. Even if there were no story or characters, the colourful comic style would have been enough to keep me reading. It did remind me, in that respect, of PG Wodehouse, and I think some other reviewers might have mentioned this. But the comparison is misleading a bit. Apart from comic language, Wodehouse also creates comic drama and populates it with ridiculous characters, which Harkaway does not attempt. The story itself and basic concept were quite interesting, with a tremendous twist revealed about two-thirds of the way through. It's only sci-fi in as much as the basic concept (which underlies the aforementioned twist) relies upon some currently-non-existent science and technology. Apart from that, it's set in the present age, and there's no spaceships or aliens.

I got interested by reading quotes and reviews saying this was some masterful next-generation combination of the best of Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut. A Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse Five combo? - Sign me up! Sorry, but not even close to that description. Meanders all over the place, loses narrative threads, and has gaping logical holes that even cheesy sci-fi tries harder to plug. It tries to convey some sadness and melodrama that just comes off as silly in the overall silly context of ninjas and ghosts. It might have been a little more fun if it just embraced the silliness all the way and skipped trying to wrench our hearts with its smattering of emotional loss and melodrama. I was hoping for a lot better, but this book definitely does not have the "stuff" of Vonnegut or Heller.

This is a post-apocalypse-type novel. Very creative and original treatment of the post-apocalypse meme. The story is told in first person and, the main character's inner thoughts are communicated very well. Although, it's not a comedy by any stretch of the imagination, this book is full of great humor. I laughed out loud several times. Of course what some people think is funny, others don't, but I think Harkaway's use of language and juxtaposition is very witty. It is also appropriate: when the main character is at his lowest point, the humor recedes, but as he recovers, so do the funny bits.The plot line is twisty. The story starts out in the present, but then there's a long flashback where we learn a lot of the main character's (the narrator's) personal history. We synch back up w/ the initial scene and the story moves ahead from there, but now we have a much better grasp of the world and the way the main character seems to fit into it. Also, some things mentioned casually throughout the story turn out to be important later, but some of these are less that obvious. I enjoyed that. It's fun to pay attention to what's happening w/o being bludgeoned by the author.There are many secondary characters, and they're interesting and mostly believable. The pacing is very good. Harkaway's descriptions of the world and what's happened to it are detailed enough to yield a strong impression w/o being burdensome. All-in-all, I really liked this book.

World War 3 has been fought using quantum weaponry that has disturbed the fabric of space time, etc., etc., and shall we say profoundly affected our unnamed protagonist. The Gone Away World is a generally successful stapling-together of the unreliable narrator trope with a kinder, gentler, Fight Club and an anti-corporate-think diatribe in an apocalypse-framed sometimes-war-movie setting, with literary aspirations that make it almost an instant classic. The writing style seems for most of the book kind of nervously verbose, and later we better understand the hero’s reference frame and why his recollections are so desperately eidetic. The ending seems a bit rushed and could have been a bit more fleshed out. But overall the pacing and construction of the story and denouements is fairly well matched to the author’s yarn-spinning powers. I will check out his next work.

I bought this book because I wanted to know the meaning of the symbol on my yoga mat. I think we should all understand the symbols we display on our bodies, clothing, homes, etc...but I digress.This book is a colorful and interesting collection of stories about Ganesha. I am only 1/3 through it, but I have learned a great deal. For instance there is no learning of just one Hindu God. The lessons to the reader are conveyed through the interaction of many Gods, and people. I have thoroughly enjoyed the book so far, and I would definitely want to learn about other Indian Gods if similar books were available. Now, every time I look at the head of my yoga mat, it has such great meaning.Full disclosure: I am a westerner who enjoys being exposed to other cultures. My review is meant to be helpful to others with a similar background. I am sure people raised as Hindu's may have a different view of this book. I am grateful to have found it.

This is the most delightful book of stories about Ganesha! Every one makes me smile. Highly recommended. (Theoretically, the book is for children. But I am reading it with an adult who is learning English as a second language - and both my student and I have enjoyed every single story.)

I used this book as a source for a research that I had to do, and I fell in love with it. The stories are beautiful and Ganesh is one of my favorite Hindu deities. I can't wait to read this to my kids for their bedtime story :)

I bought this book for my niece and nephew, but before I gave it to them I read it too. It brought back the stories of Ganesha I had been told in childhood, and made me smile at them again. It may not have the pictures of "How Ganesha got his elephant head", which I bought for another child, but the it has more stories of this altogether charming lovable god.

I really enjoyed how short the stories were. They manage to entertain but not bore the children with too much length. It wets their appetite for Ganesha enough that they want more. I also enjoyed the black & white images. They were whimsical and introduced the other Gods in a very "human"? manner. :D

The Broken Tusk tells seventeen different stories of Ganesha in easy reader format for second grade and up. The stories also lend themselves well to the read-aloud format for younger children. Many of my old favorites are here including the ones about how Ganesha got his elephant head and about how he made a "pradakshina" around his parents, into a trip around the world. Some might find the versions of certain stories here to be different from what they know. That is understandable considering how many of these have been passed along strictly through oral tradition. There are also some rarer stories here including one borrowed from Buddhist folklore.Krishnaswami has done a thorough professional job with this one. She has prefaced the book with a brief introduction to Hindu mythology and to the god Ganesha himself. Also complementing the stories are a glossary of terms, a list of characters (kids would appreciate that!), a list of other names for Ganesha, and a pronunciation guide.Krishnaswami finishes every story she narrates with a line or two that ties the legend to modern day reality. For example, after the story about Ganesha's head, Krishnaswami explains that in Indian (especially South Indian) temples today, sometimes elephants are fed and maintained reverentially. These acts, Krishnaswami explains, probably acknowledge the sacrifice made by the elephant in the original story. Small explanations like these place the stories in context, a service that I think is especially useful. The last word belongs to the wonderful old-world illustrations by Maniam Selven that complement the stories wonderfully.With this book, Krishnaswami demonstrates that she is not only a gifted storyteller, she is also a thorough one. The Broken Tusk will get an enthusiastic nod not only from the young reading set but also from their grateful parents. This book is as charming as the elephant god himself!

The first 50 or so pages are devoted to the introduction of the Captain; a mole in South Vietnam's special forces. He is also a bastard, and half-breed, with a Vietnamese mother he adores and a French father (who also happens to be a Roman Catholic priest) he despises. He is a microcosm of a homeland divided in half--with a dual nature and opposites that seem to only attract loathing or disdain.This is the fall of Saigon, the Vietnam war and the dislocation to America told from an Asian perspective, and a story non-Asian Americans should read if only for that viewpoint. But there is so much more: brilliant writing and beautiful prose that is often hilarious, and always thought-provoking. "I calmed the tremor in my gut. I was in close quarters with some representative of the most dangerous creature in the history of the world, the white man in a suit." Or, "you must claim America, she said. America will not give itself to you. If you do not claim America, if America is not in your heart, America will throw you into a concentration camp, or a reservation or a plantation."This is not an easy book to read--and no, not because there aren't quotation marks. God help some of these reviewers if they ever pick up Virginia Woolf or James Joyce. At times though the scenes of torture and rape are sickening and the author's pov about American hegemony (cultural and political) is going to disturb many. But it is challenging in the very best way. The Sympathizer does what great literature is supposed to do--force us out of our comfort zone to rethink assumptions. This wonderful, disturbing, challenging novel will do more than that--it will affirm something indomitable and essential about us all--a desire to carry on, and to live.

I read this book as part of a monthly book club's reading list; I was disappointed in it, and marvel that it earned a Pulitzer Prize. This book took me back to the Vietnam era and the Boat People era, and that is a time when, in real life (as well as in books) there were few sympathetic characters. The book includes a send-up of Apocalypse Now, another Vietnam-era story with no sympathetic characters. So, while this might be true-to-life (in some ways I'm sure it is), this isn't a life I'm eager to revisit. Normally I don't down-rate books, as I have no desire to hurt other authors, but since this one won a Pulitzer, there's vanishingly little chance that my review will hurt the author or the book's sales, I want to warn readers that this is tough, gritty, disturbing and powerful (but not in a good way).

The Sympathizer is a powerful novel, taking as its subject the final days and aftermath of the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a North Vietnamese spy who is also the aide to a top ranking South Vietnamese general.The mole (never named) was educated in the United States before returning to Vietnam and signing on as a Viet Cong spy. He accompanies the general to the United States after the fall of Saigon and continues his espionage work there. He ultimately returns to Vietnam in an ill-fated attempt to establish a counter-insurgency on behalf of the general.I found the novel to be highly educational, as I’d never read such an account of the Vietnam War from the viewpoint of the Vietnamese. The refugee experience was largely unknown to me. While the final 50-100 pages are among the most powerful, containing acts of psychological and physical torture, they are presented in an almost stream of consciousness narrative which can become tiresome to wade through.Certainly a worthy novel, however I can imagine that many might not enjoy it.

The Sympathizer is a very witty novel narrated by a Franco-Vietnamese communist spy in the South Vietnamese intelligence department. He (who is nameless) is American-educated and ends up going to America after the fall of Saigon. The third dimension of the novel is added by the narrator's dual nature and ability to see both sides of every conflict. As such he is very ironical and even snarky, especially about America, but also about Vietnam. The style is quite fizzy and engaging.The problem with the story is that it is not the revelation the author thinks it is. In an interview in the back of the book Nguyen says he hopes the novel will make people "uncomfortable in a good way." However, I doubt that many of his readers harbor any illusions about America's involvement in the Vietnam war. Yes, we dropped Napalm. Yes, we killed kids. Yes, we taught the South Vietnamese "advanced interrogation techniques" (i.e. a more sophisticated form of torture). This is not news. In addition, Nguyen's readers surely know that the South Vietnamese government was cruel and hopelessly corrupt, and that when the North took over, they were even worse, because they were cruel and fanatics who tried to "re-educate" people.The ending is a bit of a let-down because the narrator ends up with a cosmic, comic insight into the universe and politics that really isn't all that insightful. I would still recommend this novel for its style and for the personality of the narrator. But not for its supposed revelations about history or the cosmos.

What an astonishing read! The author clearly wanted to give a voice and real representation to Vietnamese people. He accomplished his goal, but just as his hero is a man of two minds, Nguyen's book is about Vietnam and everywhere. It is about Vietnamese people and everyone. When I was growing up, there was a saying that came out of Russia, "Under the Czar it was man against man. But now, since the glorious Marxist revolution, it is exactly the opposite!" So true in this book as well.Still the book tells a unique story while it is telling an everywhere story, and it is telling it in prose that is so beautifully written, it is almost poetry. And to have such a poetic soul with such a dark and at times, grim tale, is magic indeed!

This is a SUPERB book to read. I was so impressed with this book that I read it over and over when needed! A 5 star book, one of Dr. Chopra's best ever!

I was prompted to pick up The Four Agreements and this one from my bookshelf just prior to heading out to Utah for The Reset Experience and the timing couldn’t have been more apropos.Although the title reads The Seven Spiritual Laws of “Success,” it could also read a The Seven Spiritual Laws of “Life.”At 111 pages, you have just around an hour to invest, but it’s worth every single minute.Often times, the simplest and most concise messages are the ones that resonate with me the most, perhaps because of my monkey brain and the tendency for it to wander!We have Seven Laws as follows;• The Law of Pure Potentiality —>This law is about pure consciousness, something I didn’t fully grasp until AFTER The Reset Experience. More on this later.• The Law of Giving —> This revolves around “intention” and it should be giving and receiving that is unconditional and from the heart.• The Law of “Karma” or Cause and Effect —> I believe we all understand this one!• The Law of Least Effort —> Follow the path of no resistance. When you work in your Zone of GENIUS and find FLOW, everything becomes effortless.• The Law of Intention and Desire —> When you place your attention on your intention, you will attain the desired outcome.• The Law of Detachment —> A lack of knowing the TRUE “Self” creates attachments based on fear and insecurities. Life changing book. Write the days of the week on each chapter. Every day, re-read one of the very short chapters when you wake up. Pretty soon it will alter your worldview, make you a better person, keeps you focused and on track. Alongside transcendental meditation and your life will change for the better. Trust me. No therapy required. :)

Insightful and practical guidebook on aligning your consciousness, your being to the energy of the Universe, so that you can effortlessly release your wish to the Universe, and learn to let go of expectations, and let the Universe make things happen when the time is perfect.The practice of not judging anything for the day, and the practice of silence are particularly useful to me. Thank you!

This was a good read for me. Quite eye opening...At the time I was going through a transformation in my life. Jaded by Dogmatic religions and feeling like Frederich Nietche this gave me a new sort of approach to bettering myself mentally physically as well as spiritually . I now know how to heal my body mind and spirit and keep myself on a better path. Truly inspirational book... made me begin researching a lot of holistic medicine, get away from prescription drugs. Distancing myself from toxic people and situations. And even meditating or simply taking a 10 minute rest from the rat-race really does amazing things. (slight personal digression there ;) Deepak goes at life from every conceivable angle (Sciences of Psychology and Medicine as well as spirituality {more so than typical religious dogma} Keep an open mind when you read this one and you can get a lot from it.

Like most of us, I've seen Mr. Chopra on CNN. He's well spoken for sure, but I wasn't particularly interested in reading any of his books.Then I attended my first Science & Nonduality conference and witnessed Mr. Chopra deliver a knockout talk in 16 minutes.I searched online for the books he's written and I found this one: THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS. Integrating success with spirituality is a subject I'm very much interested in, so I got this book and read it in a matter of days.From all the 7 laws outlined in the book, The Law of Giving resonated the most. This chapter alone made the entire book a worthwhile read.I also found the Law of Pure Potentiality very interested. The remaining 5 laws were also intriguing, but not all of it worked for me.Each chapter has steps to follow, but I feel Mr. Chopra sometimes goes to extremes by suggesting these steps be practiced all the time. I recommend starting with baby steps and moving on from there. That way, expectations can be met with less of a chance for disappointment.I highlighted many passages through this book. There are precious gems everywhere.THE SEVEN SPIRITUAL LAWS OF SUCCESS is a quick and easy read and I recommend it to anyone interested in more from life than just material success.

I am Catholic, so it took awhile to get through this book because I was mentally “filtering” it through my Catholic viewpoint. Some of the things can be translated into God and some of it just cannot.I finished the book feeling like it is a reference manual for how to make the universe my personal vending machine, which flies in the face of everything I’ve been taught about God and how He works.In the future, I will be more cautious when I see “spiritual” in the title or description of a book because It obviously doesn’t mean that it is a book about God.
