I will write a fair review (hence the 3 stars, which I think is generous) despite my major disappointment. I follow the Nordic Food Lab, have watched countless videos about it, I've used it as inspiration and have read their scientific articles. I was therefore expecting more of this "cookbook." I make koji, miso, koji "aminos" etc. so I'd say I'm an intermediate koji hobbyist. I have a fermenter for my koji. However, this book did not give me any new information - there's no learning how to do your own experiments, there's just some ideas an inspiration, which you can easily find if you dig a little, or if you have enough creativity. On the other end of the spectrum, a lot of these are even too difficult for me - lots of recipe that require fermenting at a certain temperature for 10 weeks, using ingredients like bee pollen and fermenting it (what kind of home cook has this budget?!), so I can't help asking, who's the audience? It's neither a beginner book, for people getting into home miso and koji-making (The Book of Miso is still the book after all these years and is more comprehensive), nor is it for people who have dabbled looking for more. It gets a few stars because it's a pretty book, has nice pictures, and it's one of the first of its kind - at least starting perhaps a koji-making fad.

The Noma Guide to Fermentation doesn't just teach you "how" to ferment, it teaches you "why." And the biggest why is that the ferments in this book will make your food delicious. The book starts with very easy projects like lacto-fermentation (typical recipe: fruit, salt, jar, time) on through the complexities of making shoyu, the world's most popular fermented flavor. Yes, you can make your own soy sauce! More than that, this guide gives you the foundation (the "whys") that you can use as a jumping point to go beyond the recipes in the book to #fermentallthethings. Thank you, Rene and David, for sharing your knowledge.

My copy of this book was bound poorly (the covers didn't sit flat), so I sent it back. But I couldn't bring myself to ask for a replacement. I would never make more than one or two things from this book, and neither will you. If you want an introduction to fermentation, Sandor Katz's books are just fine. This book is clearly for foodies, not for cooks -- the amount of special equipment you'd need and ingredients you'd have to mail order is absurd. Basic fermentation is not that hard, the web has plenty of info on recipes and techniques -- your experiments are extremely unlikely to poison you, and you'll come away with a lot more knowledge than you will from this foodie-bait.

As an experienced fermenter of many things, this book is valuable to me. I was hoping for ferments that dealt with fish, meat and dairy, but there are none in this book. I'd be excited to see how NOMA deals with those foods. There are innumerable interesting projects to be made from this book, both verbatim and as touchstones for your own ingredients and ideas. The biggest issue I have with it is that this is a book, essentially, of condiments. Virtually everything in here is to be used as either a side, a small element in a larger dish, or as a straight-up condiment. This is not necessarily bad, but remember that if you spend a year aging your own soy sauce, it is, well, just soy sauce. So if you're the sort of person who digs that sort of thing (as I am), you'll like it. If not, look elsewhere.

This book has been written by the fellas from Noma, former world number 1 restaurant on the planet. Rene made clear early on in this book that fermentation plays a HUGE part in everything they do at the restaurant. Each recipe is tried and true, each recipe has been utilized at their restaurant. They explain how to use each recipe and give you ideas on different things you can do.Overall this is the best book on fermentation I have read, it is clear, easy to understand, it is expansive and just straight enjoyable to read. I cant wait to start trying some of the recipes!

Amazing. A detailed guide for the advanced class in fermentation. If you want a more basic or broader book, Sandor Katz’s books are great. But to take it to the next level, this book is truly amazing. It will allow you to undertsand how to apply fermentation techniques to other substrates. Learn how to lacto-ferment and the how to experiment and apply to other items you are interested in. This book in particular is for cooks! Lots of examples of how to utilize these ferments to take your cooking to the next level. I wanted to understand how to use Koji and ferment it; this book teaches me specifically how. I wanted to learn how to build a fermentation chamber - this teaches me how! If you want basics or ready to eat, see Sandor is great. But if you want to take your ferments to next level, this book is indispensable and best in class. Thank René and David.

This is a fantastic extesive book for people/cooks/chefs that want to learn more about fermentation and how it works.If you just want a book to open and cook the same day this isn't the book you're looking for. Overall an amazing read if you're someone who wants to learn how fermentation works and possibly try it on your own.

I honestly was not expecting this book to be as thick as it is. It covers multiple variations on classic fermented foods in every section and gives recommended uses and history for each one.My kitchen is about to look like a mad scientists lab

Seeley’s Anatomy and Physiology was the required textbook for Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 at the University of Cincinnati. This book was so helpful in this class. I would always listen in lecture then refer back to this book to really grasp that topic and read about the small details. This class is a very difficult class to master, but the book went into depth and gave real life situations. For example, I remember talking about negative and positive feedback in the body and the book gave multiple examples for each. An example the book gave is Positive feedback is something like labor during child birth and negative feedback is something like getting hot and sweating. They would often include graphics and diagrams for the harder concepts. They both really help you put the concept into perspective. There were certain sections I remember reading thinking that I felt like the authors were talking to their colleagues instead of a student which made it hard to comprehend at some points, with the help of notes the two were extremely helpful. Along with the textbook I would recommend getting the study guide that is suggested to get with it. It is based off the textbook and has quizzes and different questions covering every chapter. This would be useful when I was trying to figure out what to study more for a test. I would take the quizzes to see what I did not know. I am making this to help students like me succeed. I am majoring in middle childhood education science and social studies. The life sciences particularly interest me which made it easier to read this book. The one point I would suggest to the reader is to split the chapters up in chunks do not try to sit and read a whole chapter in one sitting, this can be very dull and hard to comprehend. The lab book compliments the textbook very well. It offers hands on experiments and explanations that the textbook does not. It helps with the anatomy component as the textbook focuses on the physiology component. If you buy the book new the book comes with an online component that can be used as additional quizzes, explanations, and questions, but if you rent or buy it used you would have to purchase the code separately. I personally thought it was worth spending the extra money. The online really helped me grasp the basic concepts of each chapter. The chapters also summarize what it was about at the end, which I liked very much. The disadvantage to this book is how wordy it can be, which makes it difficult to read about concepts you may not have a lot of background knowledge about. The pictures included with the section often help further explain what the text is trying to get across.

We had to return it because the school required an access code to get to the tests; otherwise we would have kept it.

This is an amazingly good comprehensive Anatomy and Physiology book and is going to be a great supplement to my online course that does not require a book but needs one. My only complaint is that it took SOOOO LONG to get my order. I had procrastinated in that it was just before the semester started that I ordered the book which was an error in my part. But when I ordered it, it said I would get my book within the first week or class which I thought would work out just fine. Well here we are three weeks into the semester and I just received my book. It was stated it would arrive Sept 19 and didn't get here until Oct 2. So as long as you order this book expecting not to get it for several weeks, then you are fine but if you are on a deadline, order somewhere else. As said, it is a great book and I thought a very good price.

The textbook itself is very easy to understand. This was a required text for my course in an undergrad program. The book has lots of drawings and diagrams and breaks everything down so it is easily seen. . If you are someone who needs the information in writing this is what I would advise getting. However, due to the nature of the course, I personally did not require it as much as I thought I would and only referred to it when something was glossed over in class. I am NOT recommending that you don't buy a book. I think usage depends upon the type of learner you are and the quality professor you have. This book was helpful for me and I am sure it will be to others as well.Regarding shipping, the book came within a week of ordering.

It is not programmed for text-to-speech. You are unable to print pages out. Very disappointing. Not able to return, even though it does not meet my needs.

The textbook is easy to navigate and the additional tools for highlighting are a "nice-to-have". The text satisfies my college requirement and for this I have no complaint. The material teeters back and forth from simple high-school audience to advanced college applications. I gave this 2-stars instead of 4 because of the complete Book + Shipping + Purchase experience. I am currently in another country and my Internet point-of-origin or my IP address is based in Europe, I load up AMAZON as an anonymous user who is just window-shopping without logging into my account. The digital text is $53.65 USD. When I log in the price jumps to $237.62 USD. I have attached the pictures from a screen grab.I feel like Amazon has taken great advantage of me and used my demographic information to gouge my wallet. I am a working class individual where every dollar counts. As an illustration of frugal finances but not to whine, I purposely received no Christmas gifts so that I could give my family a better Christmas experience. I have several watches in my WISH LIST that will hopefully be greatly reduced one day. From now on, I believe I will use a disposable email address and route my internet traffic to AMAZON through a VPN. I can use a server from anywhere in the US, compare different regions of the country, possibly lowering the price of sale.I would like to add that Amazon is a business, and if they have a product for sale, they can charge whatever fee they wish. As a customer, I can take it or leave it, and that's the end of it. Since I needed the text quickly, Amazon was my source and I paid the price. I felt it was expensive but I had no other options. Thought I would add a current review for the Kindle addition. Everything as described except that the map images are not viewable on the Kindle. You are able to navigate via the TOC and the Index. Problem with the index is that you are not sure exactly what ethnicity you are being taken to because it indexes different areas as they are mentioned in the text, not just that particula ethnicity. You select the page #, then you must go back until you find your heading. It may or may not be the ethnicity you intended.

Purchased as a quick guide to familiarize myself with diverse patient populations in hospital setting. Information is brief, concise, and informative. Recommend to any social worker or nurse manager to understand why cultures may not agree to modern medicine.

IMO, Mr. Meyer has done a good job explaining and showing CSS parameters. He has lots of examples with pictures depicting the results of the code. The book also indicates which styles are applicable to NS and/or IE and how well they work in each browser. There is a comprehensive appendix in the back listing the different styles and their attributes, as well as a good index. As a semi-experienced CSS user, I found it very helpful and informative. I think there are enough tips and tricks for the experienced CSS'er as well as enough explanation and example for the beginning CSS user.The book sits within easy reach on my bookshelf, and I refer to it frequently. (I think I need to get another copy for work so I can take this copy back home!)

CSS is the science and engineering behind the art of display. Meyer's book is a great resource for understanding that science. It is one of the few books allotted a place on my desk.Written much like a programming book, it explains in logical steps exactly how the rules of CSS work. It is not a picture book: it does little to help someone design a website as that is not the intent. What the book does superbly is give the reader a detailed understanding of how to correctly construct a well designed (or not so well designed) website.Because it examines the theory and logic underlying CSS, many portions of the book require thought and concentration to read. Some paragraphs seem quite difficult to follow at first glance, but the reason for this is that the ideas being conveyed are subtle and oftentimes complex. I found the book to be slow reading, much along the lines of a physics text, because a great deal of information is being conveyed in a small space.My CSS code is much cleaner, and my coding and debugging time greatly reduced, as a result of *studying* this book.

Prior to owning this book, I was involved in web design of different types for about five years. I picked up various aspects of CSS from visual editors like GoLive and Dreamweaver, just by visually creating elements and tweaking the code. However, if you really want to understand the way CSS is structured and what the best methods for achieving certain types of looks are, this is a good place to start.This book is neither pure code reference (you should get that at w3c.org), nor a tips and tricks book (though it does have some good code samples for how to achieve certain things in CSS). Rather it will teach you how to create your own "tricks", by explaining how to: structure CSS code, understand the differences in syntax, and understanding the differences between seemingly similar properties and property values (padding and margins for example).One qualm I have is that the first book I received had a really poor glue-binding (pages were falling out, and the backing was detached from the binding). The replacement book (Amazon was very quick about it) also had a detached backing, but the binding itself was OK so I kept it. Also, I will say the book is a little dry / difficult to read more than a chapter at a time, but it's just as well because it's hard to retain things from technical books when you read straight through them (usually).While this won't be the only CSS book you'll ever need by any stretch of the imagination, it's definitely a nice one to have around. I find that after my initial reading, the way I most often use this book is as a sort of "CSS Dictionary".Once you're ready to start learning how to implement CSS in earnest, I recommend "Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation" by Owen Briggs. Similar in size and depth, this book is more accessible and more of a hands-on tool, while maintaining the important code references.

For the lack of anything better in my library, I used to refer to this book a lot. But I found it only adequate. The tutorial is not that well organized, and the book is rather incomplete as a reference. Very important, it gives little help in separating the "wheat from the chaff" to help understand this complex but important topic. I ended up extracting various information from the book and other sources to make my own "cheat sheet", which I now use almost exclusively. The book is still on my shelf, but I have not used for more than a year, although I use css a lot.

This book is about another key issue in sports and finance.This book is both a scholarly exercise and a personal look, as Eckstein is a researcher and also a father and youth sports coach. In reading it I was often reminded of Jeff Passan's recent book The Arm, about baseball pitcher injuries occurring earlier and earlier, and affecting many youngsters. A common theme in both books is the prevalence of so-called travel teams, and the dangers of concentrating on one sport year-round resulting in overuse injuries.The book is very readable though the reader should be aware this is a scholarly treatment. It is based on research, much of it Eckstein's own research, and tends to pound on a point more than a "popular" tome would. That's all right, because there is an important point to pound here; the influence of for-profit sports organizations and retailers selling a product to get children and their parents to buy into a notion that they can earn scholarships to colleges through sports. Never mind that these families are already well off, could easily afford the college tuition, and spend more on these travel teams than they would just paying the tuition even if they do manage to get a scholarship.Eckstein concentrates on five sports; soccer, field hockey, ice hockey, figure skating, and ultimate frisbee. They each have different professional possibilities, different college opportunities, and different places in society. There are themes common to all and individual to each. Eckstein has spent a lot of time preparing his material, going to conferences and meetings for each sport and interviewing girls and parents as well as coaches and officials in each. The interview quotes from those involved are the most compelling part of the book. The selling tactics used, what people have learned, and what they choose to ignore is often very telling.I never had a child with aspirations of playing a sport in the pros or in college, but if I had I would have wanted to read this book first. Eckstein devotes a chapter to each of several aspects of the issue, then a final chapter with some ideas for reform, many of them quite earth-shaking to our present way of doing things. Perhaps the way we do things could use some shaking.

I'm still trying to decide how to describe this book. It strives to be a classic textbook in a great many areas and succeeds quite well. I feel as though I'm in a textile school and using a professional text when studying this book. By submerging yourself in the information you will become very well informed and, through practice, skilled in several areas of needlework. Included here is information on every aspect of basic stitchery and then some. You are introduced through picture and charts to materials, frames, hoops, notions and various floss', pearl cottons, blending filament, silks, wools and threads in great detail. Then specific stitches, not just cross stitch, but many others that may be used individually or with cross stitch are introduced.(The photography and charting is excellent, showing some of the best detail work I've yet seen.) And you go on to exercises that develop skill in that particular technique or material or both with the use of a motif. There is information on creating patterns, working with computer design, reproducing designs from pictures, using mirrors to graph corners, reverse designs, central themes and borders. There is even a section on blocking. Much more is included in this book than I could record here. This is really a compendium. As was stated by another reviewer, this is not a book of motifs or independent projects and it doesn't pretend to be one. It is the sort of refrence book that will be looked at often.

I bought it based on the rating but suspected that reviewers' age was a factor. I was right. This book is really dated, filled with a lot of very old fashioned motifs and design (the country-ish theme and complicated floral stuff). The modern cross stitching is all about geometric, spacial, digital, and simplicity.Most of the cross stitching designs are too complicated and fussy. Someone needs to come out with new books on modern cross stitching to retire these outdated books.

Like some others, I took this book out of the library and loved it. I kept renewing it over and over again until I decided to just find it and buy it. This book is truly an encyclopedia. There is so many good ideas and skills to learn in it. I just LOVE this book!

Love the examples shown and tips to improve stitching. Have used several techniques for more professional results. Really helps when there is no stitchery store in your area.

This book has some good information about cross stitch lots of neat techniques. But if your just looking to learn cross stitch and intrested in broadening your horizens on the craft of cross stitch I wouldn't recommend it to you. Most of the time if you Buy a pattern and it uses one of the techniques it'll tell you how to do it. But if you love samplers you may 100% die for this book. Then again if you do alot of samplers with specialty stitches you may know all the stitches in the book as well LOL!

I love cross stitching and this book is my favorite of all the cross stitching books I have bought. Although it is an instructional book, every so often I just go through the pages to enjoy the illustrations and plan projects. The instructions with corresponding illustrations are clear and easy to follow. This book is more than I expected and is an excellent choice for beginners and those a little more experienced stitchers who like to have a reference book at hand.

This book was recommended to me by a friend who does lots of cross stitching. Thanks to Amazon, I found a nice one for a great price. I was a beginner when I bought it but I'm doing great now and still refer to it often. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I mildly disagree with them all and think this book deserves 4 stars. First, it is really good for beginners...to a point: only a few of the projects are charted out. Designing their own piece will be daunting. And from beginner to expert, we're quite frustrated: the Gallery at the end of the book holds the projects I want to do...but NONE of them is charted!Betty Barnden is a highly respected needlework author from the UK and a number of her books have been translated into other languages including French, German and Italian. The majority of her books are not on cross stitch, though. I bought this as a gift for my wife, who is a big fan of the "Cat Who" books. (I like them too, so she lets me borrow her book now and then). Like all such reference books, the purpose of this one is to help you keep track of all the various characters and places from previous stories that might be mentioned in passing during sequels, etc. It doesn't give you a whole lot of new info, but it does help organize what you already know about the world of Qwilleran and his two amazing Siamese. Of course, if you haven't read all the episodes yet, then the synopses could be real spoilers for these whodunits. In that case, the solution is very simple: refrain from reading the summaries until you've read the original book(s) first! (Duh. I can't believe some reviewers actually complained about this feature. What use would such a reference work be if it didn't explain the plots?) The one complaint I have is that the map of Moose County is a bit primitive and not drawn to scale. Maybe there will be an upgrade in the next edition???

Love the "Cat Who" Mysteries. If you are a fan, this book is a must have.

Absolutely love it. Very helpful in identifying the characters from the other books in this series. Also the maps give a visual image to the location of the places visited. If your a student of Lilian Jackson Braun this is a must have.

I liked the synopsise of the different stories of the Cat Who series. Interesting reading, and told some facts I didn't know about the book series. I only wish there were more of those books, but I now have the whole series, and plan on passing them on to my grandaughter, who is a cat lover, also.

Great book

This book is really great, just what I wanted. It helps me keep track of the chronology of the Cat Who... books. The maps near the front are useful to get an idea where everything is while I read the indivdual books. My copy is second-hand, but it's in excellent condition. I highly recommend this book and the vendor.

Doesn't cover the whole series, but very thorough for what it does. Especially like the map and list of characters.

I have all of the late Mrs. Braun's books and this was one of the last two I needed. It arrived and I enjoyed reading it.
