Read the entire book. Easy read for clinical informatics board prep. Found a few errors in the answer key to the practice test questions.
I used this book to review for the Informatics boards, which I just took today. While I don't have the results, I felt prepared. My two main sources for prep for the Informatics boards were the AMIA CIBRC+ review course (online lectures and sample test) and this book. In terms of my background, I did not do a formal informatics fellowship or masters, and qualified via practice pathway after serving 3 years as CHIO of a local healthcare system in a major city (that is part of a large healthcare network). While I don't need to get boarded, I do want to teach fellows as our affiliate university has an informatics fellowship.Since I did not do a formal fellowship, I think the most important thing to say is, as above, I felt prepared. Of the 200 questions today, I'd say ~5 I had absolutely no clue what they were talking about. My study plan was something like: watch all AMIA CIBRC videos in 2x speed. Then read each section in this book, and compare with the Powerpoints from the CIBRC videos. Then I did the test questions from this book, and reviewed each question I got wrong or answer choice I did not know to find out what my deficiencies were. Then I did the AMIA CIBRC test questions. As I have a family and a full time job, I started studying about 2 months prior to the exam, ~60 min per day.In terms of content, this book and the AMIA CIBRC course contained about 90-95% of the same information. If you learn better by reading, this is definitely the better option. I think the AMIA course went a little too in-depth in some areas, whereas at least for the test I took today, this book was about right. The test questions for this book felt easier (I got 77% correct) than the AMIA CIBRC test questions (I got 73% correct). Notably, the length and style of test questions from both these sample tests were very representative of the actual exam. Difficulty of questions probably closer to AMIA CIBRC.The only negatives for this book are that it does contain some typos. For example I think it listed the formula for NNT as 1/ERR, when it is 1/ARR. Also about 5 of the answers for the sample test were incorrectly listed, but the explanation clearly identified the correct answer.Also, the only other advantage of the CIBRC is that after you've done all the questions, you can see the breakdown in terms of how other people did. Basically it seemed I was on par with everyone else. The questions I missed most other people did too.I'll update this review once I find out if I passed. I think in terms of me passing it'll come down to how difficult they want to make it to pass. If 65 or 70% is passing, I think I'll be ok. If 80% is passing, I'm in trouble! But I don't know that more studying would have made a major difference... I'd need to first expand to reading more primary literature or more detailed textbooks like Shortliffe.Overall I think the AMIA CIBRC+ course is extremely overpriced for what you get. Since they are recorded lectures, at this point I don't think they should charge more than $500. If I have to do it again, or if I am asked how someone should prepare, I would recommend buying this book and the CIBRC sample test (only) so you have more questions to check yourself with. If you are on a budget, this book is all you need.EDIT: 2/7/2019, I passed with a good margin!
