When I first got it, I picked this book up and opened it at random. The very first section that I looked at was regarding the fact that the body changes the places where it stores fat as you age. I don't know about you other ladies out there, but it was extremely relevant to me. No wonder my belly has started to stick out, even though my exercise and lifestyle has stayed the same.The book covers not just the specific symptoms of menopause and perimenopause but it also includes an overall look at the changes in the female body during the years from about 35 to about 50. And apparently, there are a lot of them that I had no clue about.I wish someone had given me this book three years ago. It would have been nice to have a warning about what to expect and what to look out for as my hormones are starting to go whacko.It's weird that we don't find these things out until we've been struggling with our symptoms for months or years.If you know a woman in her early 30s, give her this book now. Not for her birthday or some other occasion. Just as an everyday gift. After all, you don't want to get punched in the eye. "Are you suggesting I have violent mood swings? I'll show you a violent swing..."But seriously, this is good information to have BEFORE you need it. Also, it wouldn't hurt if husbands read it too. It has lots of good information about WHY your woman is suddenly acting like a lunatic half the time.

As an Labor and Delivery nurse, I have to get Continuing Educational Units for my license. This book was the text book for a at-home course. Anyway, knowing that I have some of the symptoms of perimenopause, I wanted to learn more about what I was going through and where it was all going. This book did all that and more.Excellently written for the lay person or professional. Covers symptoms, pathophysiology (what is going on in the body), what to expect, what to do about it.....and maybe what other physical problems may be occurring that are not related to perimenopause and could be misdiagnosed.The book made me giggle several times...."oh yeah, I am doing that...oh and that, too. You learn that you are not losing your mind, that it is all a natural process and YES, you can do something about it to ease the journey.Actually, the woman's body is pretty amazing. It goes through so many changes throughout life. Sure keeps life interesting...grin.So now I am purchasing the book for my friend...who ran out of the restaurant/bar the other night having a hot flash...she worries that something is not right...grin.I am sure this will help.

This book was a very good primer about what to expect in perimenopause but did not really enlighten me much more than other articles or pieces I'd read. I would say it would be best for someone who has very little, if any familiarity, with what the menstrual cycle means (in terms of the hormones involved and how they change throughout the cycle, and as you age. It had some good basic info but probably needs to be revised to reflect current info since the publishing date is a bit old.

This is a great book for those of us in perimenopause. It answers sooo many questions. My only complaint is that the author seems to be a bit full of herself and that gets to old - fast.

Wonderful read for women experiencing perimenopause. Info on BHRT and supplements was very valuable!

Like every bit of it,all chapters touch the most important issues and give ways how to deal with all the symptoms .

He meets many people, some good and some bad, as he tries to survive in a situation where greed has more value than life. His beauty offers opportunity that others do not get to enjoy, but also pain and suffering with the direction of the wind changing as fast as life and death options.The descriptions are mild compared to the reality and life expectancy of the gold fields. Yes, it was possible to make a fortune with a little work, but easier to just take what you want without work. Men were at extreme risk, and women did not stand a chance. Mules were treated better than children.But with gold dust dreams swirling in their heads, thousands discarded everything and everyone for the dream of riches, only to loose it all to guns, drugs, sickness, booze, gambling, and sex. Scavengers got rich from others losses. The sex for sale slavery of the poor was tolerated as long as the dream existed, but soon everyone realizes they were screwed instead of screwing others. The scars still exist and the wind still covers the remains. Only a few escape alive. What man will do for greed and jealousy is not something to be proud of, but is good to know the traps

Surprisingly, I ended up liking this book, and even go as far as giving it 5 starts. But, let's be clear here:1) This book has highly detailed depictions of sex between minors with minors and adults; lots of times without consent (aka: rape)2) This books is self-published; So, some typos pipe up here and there, but nothing tremendous.3) It is literature; fantasy, based on the acknowledge of a historic fact: "peg-boys", and child sex-slaves in general through history.If anything of the above 3 bugs you, then simply do NOT buy this book. If you do though, understand the difference between reality and fiction, and you are curious to find out how someone can use the child-sex-slave material and use in an historical novel, and DO realize that a few misspells and typos may occur, then I say this book will probably satisfy you.It's an adventure of a young boy who gets (himself) into the child-sex market of the mid-19th century in San Francisco. He'll get a hard time, but will come out victorious, having paid a price though; as we all know that that's how life works. You'll learn some interesting facts about things in the mid-19th century and have a clearer understanding of why the west was (and still is) called the "Wild" West...All in all; it's just that: An adventure with sex, drugs and fortune with main starts underage boys. If you like fiction and don't seek for Dostoyevsky-like "high-end-literature", there's a high chance you'll like this book.MY humble opinion, of course...

Although this book appears to present itself as historical fiction, there is really very little reality base to this novel. Santiago is the book's main character, a 12 year old boy from Peru, who ventures to California with his father during the California gold rush of 1848. However, it seems that author Berube really had an older boy in mind, since Santiago is described as very largely endowed and having sexual repertoires more in line with a man in his early 20's. Also unrealistic is the fact that the novel seems to suggest that every grown male from the ship captains to the local restaurant owner, is sexually interested in boys. With these issues accepted, the book is quite a sexual romp and should not be read by those who are feint of heart. There is also a good dose of violence sprinkled in for good measure. The author's language is sometimes stilted, suggesting that he may be foreign-born. All of this accepted, the book is otherwise an interesting read and the reader is quite spell-bound to find out how Santiago will survive in this harrowing drama. The ending was well-written and satisfying.

I liked the story, both the sexy parts and how the lovers overcome obstacles to live happily togther. The ugly parts are historical and need not be glossed over. The chronological and geographical bloopers are irritating and detract from enjoying the story. The date the ship sails is before the date Santi arrives at the port. There are a couple other similar errors. The geography described of the gold rush town of Columbia is all wrong - I live nearby. Look at a map when writing about the Mother Lode and GreatValley!

There are plenty of technical issues to be found in this but I'm willing to overlook them for the sake of the story.One big issue here is that it's the narrator that gives you the insight of the tale - we never really get to know these characters in that they never really speak for themselves. You can try to figure them out by reviewing their discussions or by considering what we're told they thought about something or someone but it runs thin in such a long, long, story!I'm giving it three stars because a lot of the story stays with you and the characters also but over all I felt the writing was stiff and the story was a bit much.We survive a slow start and a mid section that is interesting, though poorly guided, and a finish that is foreseeable, rushed and disappointing.It is not a smooth read and I would only recommend this to someone I believed would appreciate it as research for their own project.

I am not all that familiar with the historical Barbary Coast, though I did know it was known for lawlessness during the gold rush era. This book details the sex trade as experienced through a young boy during that time. Though this is a work of fiction, I have no doubt that it is based upon what truly happened during that time. It was heartbreaking, but the ending gives hope for at least a few of the boys. This is not a light read, but it is worth reading.

Of all the Orthodox prayer books for Kindle, this is my favorite. The prayers are traditional, but translated better than most others. It serves us well for basic prayer times. The Kindle version is very good. The paper copy version would be better with larger print and a hard cover like the 1982 edition.

This is a very good alternative to the better-known Jordanville Prayerbook. It is slightly shorter and less daunting, containing fewer canons and no akathists and also without the Divine Liturgy. However, Little Compline is here, together with the usual morning and evening prayers of the Russian tradition and preparation and thaksgiving for Holy Communion. The translation is excellent, using traditional English but with no unusual or exotic phrases. It reads very well and is a welcome addition to our growing collection of Orthodox liturgical texts. My only serious criticism is that while the Daily and Sunday Troparia are included, those of the Twelve Great Feasts are not.

Love the size and print. The prayers are wonderful.

As a non-Orthodox individual, I found that this e-book was very useful, guiding me to a newly formed prayer life.

This book was very disappointing. It contains very few examples of anything. While it is useful (though cumbersome) to determine the syntax of Oracle commands, it provides no examples of how to practically use the commands. It gives me no help in determining what command, function, or package to use, no help in how to use it, only the syntax or declaration of it. I find it far more useful to use one of my other reference books or go to the web; at least there I typically find advice and examples on how to use the commands. The book is of very limited use!.

There's a lot in here. Hardly "In a Nutshell", though. Its more of a massive reference than anything. Its about a two inch thick book.

This is a prime example of a book trying to be all things and falling to be anything at all.It is to big to be a quick ref and to small to be anything else.I had hope that by now there would be a 2 ed based on feedback from readers,but it seems that Oreily is content to leave it as it is.That is sad for us all but it also means that Oreilly has damaged its brand in my eyes.Here is what i Said on Oreillys site soon after I bought the work years ago.---start--This book could use some improvement. Overall it is good but it fails to take into acccount that not all parts of oracle need to be included in a quick ref.In particular it tends to ignore the bread and butter of pro-cobol procand odbc in favor of more trendy JDBC JSQL etc. This might be forgivable but to include very damn oracle package notwithstanding how likely they are to be usefull to an application programer is not. The book starts to look more like an oracle feature list for presales than a handbook to surive in the trenches. This makes the book far less usefull for me than I had hoped. I expect that I will keep looking for that handbook.--- END---In retrospect I think I was too kind, but I was hoping they would improve thier products. I had been an O'reilly fan and customer for years,and so I was hoping, as a customer, to push gently in the right direction.Well, in any case, O'reilly has left me before I left them. I may buy O'reilly again, but the persumtion of quality and utility is no longer in their favor-- where once I would buy sight unseen, now I must have proof of utility.I do not know what they are doing to the Nutshell series, but I do not like it.

This well-written multi-purpose 'Oracle' text has managed to track changes, and keep pace with all the recent developments in the software arena. Its presentation is more practical than theoretical. The book is versatile."Oracle in a Nutshell" includes all the 'includables'. Its layout is fine. However, if you are a beginner with only a vague knowledge of RDBMS (and stuffs like that), you are likely to be frustrated by this book's high assumptions. It does not have that type of patience (or gentility) that most "for dummies" series are famous for. The authors of this book designed it for the intermediate (and advanced) learners.

As an Oracle developer, I have been frustrated reading all the Oracle documentations. It's hard to locate what you want to know in those big and thick documentations. I was thrilled to find this book -- it really is a great reference and it can basiclly replace my collection of some other Oracle books. This book is very well-organized into different topics including architecture, data dictionary, SQL, PL/SQL, JAVA and much more. Some topics like PL/SQL and Java, (imagine they are in one book!) look more like a dictionary. You can easily look up for the systax/commands. It gives you a few lines coding as example followed by a brief explaination --All in a concise manor. ( I believe the author has spent considerable time and effort not only in writing the book to make it as complete as possible but also in oragzating each topic in a logical and easy to follow way. ).Bottom line, this is a very comprehensive resource covering lots of topics, pretty much whatever you need is all in there, in one book!! I have been benefit a lot from having this book at my desktop for quick and easy reference.

I am an experienced developer who purchased this book as a quick reference because I don't always have time to hack through the Oracle documentation. The book has been quite useful and I've found it has everything I need, but it is often difficult to find things because of the way the book is organized.Specifically, what I find annoying is the lack of complete information all in one section. For example, the entry for TO_CHAR() for dates lists the syntax along with the input and optional mask parameter. The optional mask parameter is labeled dfmt which refers to a list of possible values in Appendix D. No where under the TO_CHAR() entry does it mention that the list of valid date formats is in Appendix D. If you have not used the book in a while, you will forget that the list is in Appendix D and spend the next ten minutes trying to figure out where the list is. FYI, I had to go all the way back to the first page of the chapter to find it. Could the author/editor not have included a small blurb next to the parameter like: (Appendix D)?Also the SQL*Loader section is a little hard to figure out for those of us who only use that tool every six months or so. It seems I do a lot of cross referencing when I use this book.All in all this book is accurate, complete, and quite handy. I am not certain how much improvement could be made in terms of expanding the details of each entry with out making the book much bigger, but I hope that some how the author will figure out a way. I look forward to seeing the 2nd edition.

This is a collection of three novellas about Lord John which have all been previously published. The stories about Lord John are a spinoff of the Outlander series.LORD JOHN AND THE HELLFIRE CLUB: Lord John is approached by a man who bears a resemblance to Jaime and agrees to meet with the man about a political problem. The man is soon murdered and Lord John investigates and is drawn into the Hellfire Club. This is a very short story (around 40 pages) which gives a glimpse into Lord John's life and a quick investigation, but it didn't really stick with me. Neither the mystery, nor the life glimpse seemed that grand. Okay story for fans, but not a necessary read. Rating 2.5 stars.LORD JOHN AND THE SUCCUBUS: Lord John is in Prussia and encounters another murder. This time the suspect is a succubus (female demon). Lord John investigates the death. This is a longer story (about 100 pages) and has a bit of supernatural flare which won't surprise readers of the Outlander series. The mystery was intriguing to be because of the supernatural possibilities mixed with possible prosaic answers. The closeness of the possibility of supernatural answers feels really time appropriate. The story was enjoyable and I liked the resolution. Rating: 3.5 stars.LORD JOHN AND THE HAUNTED SOLDIER: Lord John is engaged in an inquiry as to the explosion of a cannon during battle. Through a series of events, Lord John ends up with the only evidence that the cannon was poorly constructed, perhaps even criminally so. The novellas in this series have so far not interested me as much as the previous novel. I was interested in the investigation but perhaps the parts of this novella that overlap with the Outlander series was the most interesting part to me. Rating: 3.5 stars.

I enjoy the Lord John books and stories, because I like Lord John! He's a likeable fellow with a dangerous way of life. Not that one precludes the other, but in the 18th Century Sodomites, as they were called, faced a death sentence if found out. Lord John Grey is an urbane, attractive, adaptive and quick-witted man who happens to be what we call "Gay" in the 18th century. These 3 stories may not please all, but they are worth reading because they add to the body of knowledge about Lord John. They don't need to be read to enjoy the larger (in every sense!) Gabaldon books, but they do form part of the body of work and have their own value. That said, I think I liked "Lord John and the Succubus" best for the character development of some of the Other characters in the story, and shows us the cleverness of Lord John in a ... well, clever way! Highly recommended!

Of course Lord John is not as exciting as the main Outlander characters, and in the main books to me he seems a rather flat character, convenient for providing Jamie and Claire with access to money, supplies, and to keep us informed of the life of Willie. But these stories, set between the years of the separation between Jaime and Claire, make John a much more interesting and complicated character. There is a small mystery in each of them and a larger mystery that flows through all the Lord John stories so far, which is worth the read. They can be read alone (and in any order according to Gabaldon) but the greatly enrich the main storyline in the Big Enormous Books. As an entire collection, they contribute a lot to understanding the historical background for all the characters and they add new ones of interest to the larger series as well.

Anything Diana Gabaldon writes can be assumed to be well worth reading. She's exceptionally gifted. She creates Lord John as a respectable character but with an overwhelming attraction towards other men, yet the reader rather finds himself/herself reading with tongue in cheek, anticipating Lord John buckling before his preference, even as Lord John himself realizes his preference for "sexual partners" is overpowering. How Gabaldon manages to make this character so completely likable--for his integrity clearly shines through--yet succumbing to his "attraction"--is a work of art. In her other writings, Jamie Fraser, an alpha male, tells Lord John just what HE thinks of him--and it's surely not flattering; but Jamie tells it like it is . . . this book I found to be hypnotizing reading, for sure; and the settings of which Diana Gabaldon writes just fit right in--absolutely perfect. This book, as are all of her writings, is a page turner. I think she had a good time writing it, probably chuckling to herself at times. (I indicated in this review that it was written in the third person--I read it some time ago, can't really remember. I do know in OUTLANDER Series, Claire is written in 1st person, as I recall--so perhaps I have that all mixed up--no time to check right now.) One can't help but like Lord John, and rather wish he can stay "out of trouble,." yet we anticipate his putting his "hand in the cookie jar" helplessly. The man's respect for others--male or female--comes across as being beyond reproach. One could trust him with one's bank account . . . but, his vocation and sexual preference does present some interesting and exciting confrontations!!!

IMHO, Diana Gabaldon cannot write a bad story. That said, I've liked some of the books in the Outlander series better than others. The same is true in this combined series of three novellas.Of the three I liked the third one, Lord John and the Haunted Soldier, the best because it touches briefly and indirectly on the deeply poignant feelings that Lord John has for Jamie Fraser. It also highlights several admirable aspects of LJ's character in a story that is a very good and entertaining read. For me, Lord John is the absolute best of the Outlander secondary characters and I will read any story involving him. He absolutely touches my heart.

I was eager to read this novel because of the reviews and other readers' comments. I found it rather dull most of the time as the characters were not fully developed and were stereotypes whose problems have been written about before in a much more interesting plot and with more colorful language. I kept hoping that something interesting would turn up or there would be a plot twist, but the narrative just rambled on as the narrator was self-absorbed and rarely had any insights about his relationships. The recurring presence of the women in his life was always the same; his sister never really changed; his girlfriend drifted through her life and unbelievably married her favorite author as an old man.I found I started skipping about half way through and kept hoping for better understanding of the characters as each new part began--the novel like the narrator was a wreck.

Excitingly i bought this book after vCard reading a race review, I was thoroughly dissapointed, no plot, a mangle of where and when lacks any real connection or theme. A wasted talent

Every once in a while a book comes along and draws you - touching the deepest parts of you - this was the book for me.

A truly moving novel. Beautifully written. The sparse language of the book underscores the loneliness of the narrator.

Sad story. Very well written.

Many aspects of this novel were heartbreaking, but the prose of the English translation was beautiful.

I really enjoyed reading this book. However there was a lot of repetition going on throughout the book. It caused for it to drag on at parts. In the beginning of the book we spent so much time with Alexis worrying about trying to fix the human world when that wasn't even the premise of the book. Had it been then her going on and on about it would have been purposeful.I didn't like how she turned Zirmira (sorry if I misspelled it). Then we had no real interaction with her.I would have liked a little more of that. So we could have built a relationship with her, but we also could gave seen first hand how Alexis mothers. But I guess that would have prolonged her relationship with Cliff. I fell in love with little Larus in the book 3. He was such a sweetie. The grown version was a bit of a jerk. He was kind of rude to his mother all the time. He didn't have all the facts. About their relationship and it made him blindsided. Also we got retold part of previous books in large sums. I understand t need to bring clarity for readers, but don't bulk it down. It didn't flow well in some instances and it felt forced. Making it more of a push through.I think I respected Alexis as a character in this book more than the other ones. She was so strong and powerful in this book. Not depressed, acting like a victim, or useless. She fought for what she wanted even thought she struggled to find out what that was. She was courageous. We saw so many different faucets of her and it was breathtaking. I loved learning about her journey with Cliff. I felt their love and chemistry. I felt their pain when she realized her love for him had grown different. That parting scene was so captivating heartfelt and strong.I think this book left a lot of unanswered questions and I can't wait to get them answered. I look forward to seeing how she rules and how relationship will play out with Alre.

Oh there’s plenty of action to hold your attention. There’s several times I cried, some heartbreaking things happen in this story. Strong characters fill the story.This story, takes place 80 yrs after book 3. Because of the break you might be able to start with it, but you would’ve missed everything that got us to this point. And although this book does reach a conclusion it does lead you into the next one.

I have enjoyed this series, however Alexis is driving me crazy! She has had eighty years to grow up and still hasn't managed it. First is Cliff that she can't live without, then Tanner, then Cliff, then a werewolf, then Cliff for eighty years and 10 children, now this other dweeb, whatever he is, who or whats next. Let me guess, a Fairy, or a Unicorn, no I've got it, BIGFOOT, and maybe Cliff in-between.

This is the book I’ve been waiting for her to write. The characters are all mature, and don’t make me so mad, plus there’s no weird deviant sex attractions. I finally feel she’s writing at her potential.

This is a really good book that I highly recommend! The characters are interesting and it easily kept my interest. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer! I would think the story was going in one direction and then it would end up somewhere else. Very entertaining.

This is my favorite book so far in this series! Maybe because I have been craving the moment Alexis and Alrekur get together. I felt like I was at the castle with them! You know your reading a GOOD BOOK when you slip out of reality and into their world! I've only been able to say that with a small handful of authors! J. K. Rowlings, you better watch out! Thanks Stacy for a magical time! Now I have to go because I have to get #5!

Never haven read any books about the paranormal, I wouldn't have started this series if it wasn't for the author...but, I have to say, I am hooked, and I LOVE this series. Funny, scary, vivid...this series is a must read for all paranormal fans, and for all of you who haven't started yet!

I have become so involved with this story I'm having a hard timue putting it down. I will say I usually don't buy books separately. I'm always looking for a way to save. But this series of books has given me joy and sadness. If you like romance novels with action you will enjoy this.
