I bought this to review for the Principal 068 TEXES exam, just in case there were any legal/law questions on the exam. I did not need this for the exam at all, but I still found it to be a great resource. I like that it covers the laws and goes into depth about the how and why some have come to be the way that they are here in TX.

this was the text for my educational law class. you would think a text such as this would be dry and boring, but FALSE! interesting and well written for a student studying the content area. i learned so much reading this book.

I bought this book for a graduate law class, and it is wonderful! It provides a very clear, detailed analysis of Texas court cases pertaining to education on a wide variety of issues from prayer in schools to dress codes to discipline. We read the book cover to cover, but I feel this is more of an easy reference guide Out of all of the books I purchased for grad school, this will be the most valuable and helpful for when I become a principal.

Not the most exciting read, but very informative. Every parent in Texas should take an interest.

Required textbook, but very well written and updated!

Very informative, I'm not a lawyer so I have to reread some stuff but overall a good book to understand Texas School law.

While I've been a fan and follower of Michael Hyatt's blog for a long time, I did not receive a free copy of Platform. I confess, as much as I like his blog, I wasn't going to buy the book for two reasons:1. Prior to the launch of Platform, he mentioned much of the content was reworked material from old blog posts (which I assumed I had read previously).2. Since I teach others how to start their own blog, I am already up to my eyeballs in information of this sort.Therefore, I thought I would hold off and wait until I could get a copy at the library.Incidentally, I bought the book the day it launched, swayed by all the 5-star reviews, enticed by the freebies he offered during launch week and intrigued by his launch process, which I wanted to watch first-hand (you just never know when that information will come in handy).I have read the book in full.Here are some of my thoughts, in no particular order:-- Overall, his tone is very encouraging and inspiring. I've read other how-to books in which the author seems arrogant and condescending, leaving me feeling discouraged and inept by the end. That was not the case here. By the end, I was rearin' to go!-- He makes a strong case for learning the ins and outs of social media as a way to grow your business, even if you don't have a lot of computer background, or if you feel technically challenged. I am also self taught so I wholeheartedly agree. As he says, the best way to learn, is to dive in and go for it.-- He talks about the importance of having a blog (or website) which acts as your home base online. I wholeheartedly agree with this point as well. However, like so many others, he doesn't go into great detail about exactly *how* to start a blog other than to offer tips such as "I recommend a WordPress.org blog." On the other hand, he goes into great detail about starting a Twitter account and he devotes several chapters to using Twitter effectively (see below).-- When looking at his numbers, it's worthwhile to note, even though Hyatt started his blogging and social media journey like many of us (with little background knowledge), he has had significant advantages which I think have helped his online presence grow so well. He is graced with connections to well-known and very influential people (great for interviews, endorsements, etc). It also doesn't hurt to be the Chairman (formerly the CEO) of one of the largest publishing companies in the U.S. To be sure, this is well deserved, and his experience is vast. Clearly, he has worked very hard for many years to build a huge network of excellent contacts. He definitely makes no guarantees if you use his tips, you will reproduce his results, but I do think it is helpful to look at those results with his background in mind. I appreciated seeing his hard numbers (great transparency), but even though my numbers don't come close to his (and I've been at this for years too), I need to look for upward trends, not specific numerical benchmarks, which would indicate growth.-- It is true, much of the book content is reworked posts you can find for free on his blog. I found myself thinking many times, "Oh yeah, I remember reading this..." If you're not already familiar with his blog and don't feel like poking around there to see what he has written in the past, it's probably worth having all the info packaged nicely.-- He offers a lot of tips for Twitter but doesn't talk about Facebook, Google+ or any other social media platform (except to mention he's not a huge fan of Facebook). Clearly this is because he has had the most success on Twitter, which is understandable. But to those reading, it's important to know who your audience is before assuming Twitter is the place to be. His target audience might be on Twitter, but if your target audience hangs out on Facebook or Pinterest more than Twitter, you should be on Facebook and Pinterest, not Twitter.-- True to Michael Hyatt style, the book is packed with helpful, actionable tips that will help anyone who wants to become active and effective in social media.Beginners may get overwhelmed. There is certainly a lot of excellent information, but if you try to take it all in at once, you'll want to run for the hills! Tackle it in small chunks and implement his tips as you have the time. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. It really does take a long time to get established and start seeing results.I can't remember if he said it explicitly in the book, but I would also add, ideally you will dive into social media *before* you have something specific to say or sell, not *when* you have something to say or sell. Hyatt's right, it's all about relationships these days, so the sooner you can get those relationships started, the better. Then, when you do have something to say or sell, you can tap into what you've already established.Overall, it's a great reference that I'm sure I'll be returning to again and again.

This book is so filled with stimulating promotional ideas that I marvel how anyone could do all or even most of them. Michael Hyatt must have more energy than any other ten people combined. He's blessed to have that energy, but energy, like all other good things, is a gift from God. For those of us whose gifts don't include such unrelenting speed and focus, the list of promotional tasks that we apparently must do to rise from obscurity is overwhelming. I've incorporated some of Hyatt's ideas into my own online presence, but I don't have the time or resources to do a lot of them. Thirty minutes a day posting on Twitter, in addition to everything else? Maybe not. What I'd like to read is a synopsis or synthesis of Hyatt's ideas, perhaps in order of what's most important or useful for most people. A list of five tasks is more likely to get tackled than a list of a hundred tasks. But then I guess it wouldn't be a book. Oh well. I envy Hyatt's aggressiveness and promotional success, even though I know I'm not called to that.

Through this book, Michael Hyatt single-handedly changed my views about social media.Hyatt's depth of knowledge, his practical tips, and examples that resulted in his own success make his message compelling. Yet, he never talks down to the reader. I had never heard of Michael Hyatt until I got his book. I was just looking for a way to believe that social media was worth my while, and a way to get some "science" for how to use it. Hyatt's book provides all of that, and more.For those critics who note that Hyatt lifted some of his blogs to create the book, I'd say: Right! As experience authors, we ALL snitch stuff from our stash! But the original blog is amplified, updated, polished, and organized into context for the book. I might add that I've read some parts of the book more than once; not because the content is hard to understand, but because it takes much practice to fully implement what he's suggesting.I can't remember how long ago I bought this book, but I keep going back to it. Honestly, I went from thinking that social media was just a bunch of dribble to believing that social media is the key to getting your message out there if you have anything--anything at all--to say or sell.I handle all of my books very, very gently. But I've just plain over-used this book. And, I am beginning to want one copy at home, and one at the office!

This is a good primer for anyone just getting started in building a platform online. If you're an entrepreneur, writer, or blogger, this is basic information to get you started on the right track. It's very comprehensive in that sense.Caveat: I think a portion of the information is or will be dated soon, simply because technology and social media changes so rapidly. Mr. Hyatt does especially focus on Twitter as that is his favorite social media platform. That advice wouldn't necessarily apply to everyone, though there is no one cookie cutter approach that will be ideal for every audience. If someone says that there is, I would be wary of that advice.Overall, Michael Hyatt is a wealth of information and I trust his integrity, so I think it's definitely a worthwhile read.

A rather amazing book that sadly won’t get the attention it thoroughly deserves. This hefty tome provides a timely, informative and authoritative look at the global maritime logistics industry, helping explain its history, considering its present-day challenges and operations and casts an eye forward to its future.It is clearly aimed at the academic or industry participant and for its target audience it has scored a bulls-eye. Yet for the more interested generalist it still offers a lot, although you can understand they are less likely to stumble across it, if nothing else because of its price. It is a bit of an expensive casual read, but still a great bargain if you have a need for it as you will get your money’s worth.This is a revised (second) edition, a worthy upgrade if you will, with new chapters on port-centric logistics in concept and practice, hinterland logistics and global supply chains, maritime transport and logistics as a trade facilitator, and future trends and developments. Don’t worry if you feel that you are treading in deep water, as the book’s team of international experts who act as contributing authors manage to find a level, aided in no small part by its editors, or collective voice that can appeal to audiences of all levels and experiences.This reviewer is no stranger to the world of international logistics and freight shipping, albeit mostly as a passive participant and occasional importer, yet this book managed to throw a lot of “I didn’t know that” or “I had never thought of that”-type reactions in to the reading mix. A lot of the book’s detail went clearly over this reviewer’s head, yet it didn’t feel as if things were being wasted either, and surprisingly rather a lot of things stuck in the mind. Anyone who works actively with logistics could stand to gain a fair bit of background knowledge and actionable industry information from this book. Students and other academics have access to a gold mine.For example, it is not necessarily a given that an importer should have the exporting party arrange the freight booking. There can be often advantages in the booking, seemingly a trivial detail, being handled by the importer. This was an entertaining read that kept me up all night. In the entirety of the book, there was only one thing that I was able to predict and it was in the first part of the book. The rest of the book kept me engaged because I honestly didn't know what to expect next. We only get to read the book from the main character's perspective so we only know what he knows. Turns out, he's out of the loop on a lot of things.In a previous book by this author, Mogworld, I enjoyed his playing around with words. And this book is similar. Because mathematics created Quantunneling, and Quantunneling put the space pilots out of business, mathematical terms became dirty words. As a result, this is a very clean book with only one or two dirty phrases. After the first couple of chapters, hearing someone referred to as a "bracket" no longer seems out of place. It's a rather natural linguistic turn that helps to create and sell the world.I really don't think there was anything in this book that I didn't like. Yahtzee covers a lot of fictional and science fictional tropes within this satire, but they feel like they are a natural part of the world. From Angelo, a space pilot who'd gone native on another world until the princess dumped him, to evil corporate overlords with spoiled children. This book takes place outside of our world, but everything that Yahtzee put into it felt like a natural addition. Nothing was added or mentioned for no purpose and nothing felt out of place. And I STILL couldn't predict anything!The ending for this book wasn't the grand boss battle that I usually like for my sci-fi books. Instead, I got an ending that I didn't know I wanted until I got it. It was a great way to end the book and leave me with with a satisfied smile.So, if you are at all interested in satirical sci-fi novels, I highly recommend you pick this up. Yahtzee has an amazing sense of humor that is complimented by his intelligent story telling. I greatly enjoyed this book and am very glad that I bought it. I will be picking up more of Yahtzee's books.

One of Croshaw's better books. There were a lot of moments in the early and mid parts of the book where I was legitimately laughing out loud.It also contains some of the more (initially) interesting characters in the author's works.I was honestly kept reading for most of it in equal parts wanting to get to the next funny bit and wanting to see where the characters went.Unfortunately, there's a "However" to this review. The book really loses steam the closer it gets to the end. As for humor, I don't think I laughed at all in the final 100 pages, which, for a comedy story, is a bit of a problem. And the characters never really go anywhere interesting.I can clearly see the author was trying to subvert your expectations by not having characters develop the way they normally would. The problem I've often seen with authors who try this, and, unfortunately, Croshaw is no exception, is they're so focused on subverting tropes, they neglect to have the characters develop much at all. Other than the main character, no one involved changes much from the beginning to the end. Their situations may change, but their characters seem mostly unchanged. The female lead is particularly noteworthy in this regard. She starts out mostly unlikeable, continues to be mostly unlikeable, and finally evolves to be mostly unlikeable. To paraphrase Croshaw's own words "Intentionally unlikeable is still unlikeable."Even the main character's arch is pretty unsatisfying. Which, again, given the themes in the book, may have been intentional, but that doesn't prevent the reader from feeling disappointed in the end.There's also a big mystery hanging over the majority of the book, which ends up never being solved. It seems like the authors hints at the secret at the end, but if the solution he's implying is what I think it is, it carries some MASSIVE consistency issues.Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I couldn't help being let down by it. There's a strong theme throughout poking fun at the typical Space Adventures of Captain Dashing, which is used well for a number of laughs and pseudo-poignant points, but with such a lackluster ending I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd rather have read one of those books.In short: Worth a read for the first 75%-80%, but it deserved a better ending.

Alright, maybe I'm a stickler, but this book has an unacceptable amount of typos. A lot of them, like this one, aren't just snafu's in teh/the variety, but sometimes they make the reader assume the proper answer. Take this for instance:"This procedure is not recommended because SSH version 1 is not as secure as version 1; however, you may need to use version 1 to connect to some servers"And the practice questions are nowhere near the caliber of the exam questions. I blew these ones out of the water, but my passing score on the Linux+ exams were sad compared to what they were on the practice tests I took. And whats up with the blatantly tricky BS test questions at that?For instance one of the test questions was:Your company moves from New York City to Boston (both cities are in the U.S. Eastern time zone). Your computers contain /etc/localtime files that are symbolic links to /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York. How must you adjust these computers’ time zone configurations?The answer: E) None of the above.The reason? "Because New York and Boston are in the same time zone, no time zone changes are necessary, so option E is correct."I'm sorry but this little slap in the face is not only a trick question, but disregards the fact that this exam is covered in many countries around the world, and I'm sure there are quite a few people who don't know where exactly all the 50 states have timezone cutoffs and which states don't even observe daylight savings.Ok, I'm done ranting, so let me do a rundown of the good:-Covers all the material. no doubt.-Good for intermediate Linux users already.-Always gives you "a little extra", what to watch out for, more common ways to do things than the exam world, and several examples along the way.The bad:-Typos and dumb practice test questions as explained above.-Not enough hands on examples to get the depth the Linux+ exmaples. For instance, a lot of the test requires you to know a lot of the flags used with commands. Briefly touching over them and using commands without flags doesn't prepare you enough. More examples on advanced ways to use some of these commands would have been helpful.-Some of the sections, like SSH, I felt were pretty incomplete, even for the tests standards.All in all, I used this book, the Shotts "The Linux Command Line" and www.theurbanpenguin.com to prepare, and I got the pass, it just wasn't as easy as I was expecting it to me. Interesting that for an "entry level" exam, this was probably harder than the CCNA, but maybe thats just because my linux was garbage before I started studying for this, and I already had touched cisco devices before.

Explanations of the topics in the book are subpar at best. There seems to be no logical flow that explains things from a beginners perspective all the way to a well-informed well explained perspective. Certain topics introduced are explained to a certain point but then left for other topics. The result is holes in the readers understanding that must be tolerated while the reader progresses through the textbook. This does not lend itself to a progressive and steadily achieved understanding. Certain topics that are introduced are not thoroughly and completely explained. This is not appropriate for a text that is supposed to offer complete and thorough understanding. Lastly the method which is chosen to explain topics, concepts and details loses the opportunity to touch on generalizations and to highlight patterns that can be used to further solidify understanding.

I relied on this book for approximately 90% of my study content. I also used a few other books and have practical work experience using Unix/Linux.I passed! I guess that's the main thing.I felt confident after finishing the first exam, but the second exam was pretty brutal in comparison. For the second exam, I would definitely supplement my studies with resources outside of this book. They tell you that there are 5 "experimental" questions that aren't counted towards the score, but I felt like there were at least 20 questions where I had no clue what the answer was :pGood luck!

The thing to do today with Linux+ books apparently is to develop ones that aren't complete. Robb Tracy's book and this book are both missing a good deal of information for the cert. Robb Tracy's book however is missing a LOT MORE; also a good amount of information in Tracy's book is just plain wrong (capabilities of a command, options, etc..). Since I read both of the popular cert guides, I'll give my opinion on them both.If you're shopping for a book and you're completely new to Linux I would start with Tracy's book (yes even though it has a few things wrong). Tracy's book seems catered to the beginner. Just be sure to do a man page of every command he gives which you should do with any book because you cannot rely on what they tell you for options to do know for a command; in Tracy's case though you're doing it because it might be one of the ones he got wrong.If you're not new to linux and have at least some experience, I would just buy this book and ignore Tracy's book. I really want to say ignore Tracy's book altogether but Roderick's book is so dry, dull, and man page like that if you lack at least some introductory knowledge this book might kill you. I didn't subtract any stars for that because, personally, I like that. I always see complaints about cert guides not being great for beginners because it didn't explain things for well or something of the sort. Well waaaa. A cert guide is not a Dummies guide, they're a guide to a certification.The tests that come with this book are a joke. They don't do anything for you except reinforce that you memorized what he said, not that you understand it enough it to take a real test; which again, is only an issue if you're new. Don't rely on this tests, go to LPICs website, they have links to other sites that have practice tests. Be warned that a lot of tests out there aren't real, they aren't actually material for this exam; which is why you shouldn't go outside the resources at LPIC's site. A lot of the websites, apps, and tests for purchase aren't actually Linux+/LPIC-1. They are OLD LPIC-1 or current LPIC-2. One such test floating around that is labeled as Linux+/LPIC-1 has a ton of technical questions of Samba configuration; Samba isn't on this exam.The only reason I docked a star is because this book is missing information; not enough that you can't still pass without a problem, but enough that you might be annoyed.As a side note because I just remembered; Tracy's book absolutely blows for LX0-102 (the second test), it is missing a ridiculous amount of information about the second test; enough so that if Tracy's guide was your only book (and you're somewhat new) you would fail the second test miserably.If you care the digital content for this book includes the assessment test from the beginning of the book (to gauge if you're already ready), a hundred or so flashcards, each end of chapter test, and around a 50 question test for both LX0-101 and LX0-102.

Beautiful full color photos of the mighty Saturn V during assembly, test, and flight. Knocked down to 4 stars due to the neglect of the most important piece of the rocket: the Instrument Unit. One little photo of the IU that was the brains of the Saturn V. Should've had a separate chapter on this essential part.

Very good book I used it for my BA research project. It reads like a slide show or power point.

Mr. Lawrie follows up his Sacramento's Moon Rockets--the previous excellent contribution to this Images of America series--with this entry covering the venerable Saturn V, the late, lamented rocket that took Americans to the moon.He does an excellent job documenting the history of the legendary rocket that was abandoned all too soon and, with it, the dreams of a space program that we'll never see again, not, at least in our lifetimes.I usually find in these books a photo or two that I've never seen before and Lawrie does not disappoint here: On page 62 is a photo of Apollo 9's S-IVB stage firing its J-2 engine that the crew took after they separated from the stage and extracted the Lunar Module from it. This photograph is the only time Apollo astronauts ever had the opportunity to witness what must have been an awesome sight--that big S-IVB stage blasting itself away from them. As I said, I'd never seen that one before and gems like this make the books in this Series worth every penny.If you grew up following the 1960s space program as I did, you may find it somewhat melancholy to view these photos, showing the Saturns and the VAB and LC-39 all new and pristine, with the knowledge that all of it would be so quickly abandoned as the Nation so rapidly lost interest in manned lunar exploration. And that all this magnificent engineering talent would be so blithely trashed.But, that sad history makes Lawrie's work here all the more important--as are his previous reference works covering the manufacture, flight history and disposition of the Saturn launch vehicles (see Amazon's entries for these books).I would hope that there is a companion addition to the Images Series covering the Saturn 1/Saturn 1B in the works.All in all, well done.tfrielin@uga.edu
