The best book on photography as an approach to personal expression that I have seen. In our age of high tech equipment and mega pixels, the author says: “Alone or together, good composition and technical prowess don’t imply fine art. A great number of photographers can produce exquisite photographs that say nothing and inspire nobody.” He shows us, through his own works, how photos can be a powerful medium of personal expression, discussing in depth a number of topics: composition, pre-visualization of photographic results, realism, abstraction and art. That's enough, but there is more: developing or expressing a personal philosophy, exploding many myths in photography, and thoughts on creativity. There are pot shots one can take: in the middle of the book he shows many of these principles from his years in the realm of film and chemical development. I found that even these parts as well as the the "digital" sections give all of us food for thought. Bruce is not just pontificating; he tells us his logic and often argues the opposite of his final viewpoint, as any critical thinker should. Very unique, very worthwhile!

I'm an experienced photographer who always managed to be able to get great shots no matter what the conditions, but I always wanted to be better. At the time I purchased this fantastic treatise on personal expression I was ready to take things to the next level.Mr. Barnbaum, I will be forever in your debt. This book almost immediately made me a true artist who can now consistently and deliberately create the exact message I want to communicate. I take about 1/10th of the photos I once did. I know where to position myself, and most of all, I know what I want to say before I say it.I rarely write amazon reviews, though I should more often. I simply had to say something about this book. Ignore that some of this book is about film and darkroom techniques. READ THE TITLE. This is about the ART of photography, not the process or the medium involved.Mr. Barnbaum not only is a great teacher and that's obviously immensely helpful. What makes him the best I have read is that his images are phenomenal. Not only that, his images are completely different than anything you have ever seen. They will bend you as you try to understand them. Then you realize that this is what art is all about.Buy this book if:- You care about being an artist with real ability to express yourself.- You are already technically proficient and comfortable with your equipment and want to take photographs people NOTICE.- You care about being the best.Don't buy this book if:- You want to learn technical how-to information about how to formulate a particular shot (like aperture settings, etc)- You want to stay mediocre.

This book is ideal for those who have done some photography (& know some basics of composition & exposure) but who want to improve on it. Rather than spending on new cameras & equipment, this book will go a long way to work on what you want to achieve in photography & understand some great detail on both compositional and technical part of photography. The book is surely long & the author sure repeats his ideas several times but it is clear he wants you to improve rather than shoot for short cuts & boring clichés.

Too many photography guides are written with a dry, technical style that is good for picking up a few new tricks, but does little to kindle a passion for the art. Barnbaum's book is the antidote to these kind of guides. The book is a pleasure to read, imparting ideas and technical tips as a byproduct of the reflections of a master of the craft with a lifetime of experience. Some parts of the book are more applicable to film, but I still improved my digital techniques by studying the concepts. In summary, I have purchased probably 20 photo guides over the past five years, but if I could only keep one, this would be it!

I liked very much this book. This is a whole book on the central aspects of photography, from why-taking-pictures to how-to make-good-prints, covering both color and B&W, but more of the latter. It is not a beginner's book, but rather a guide for those who may want to go in depth into the technique and art of photography.I liked the sections about art more than those about technique, which I find too narrowly boxed in the Zone System. I know that this is a long tradition but I feel it is overstated - the zones are just a quick reference to areas in the density-exposure curve, and that's it. I find the continous references to Zone XXX quite tiresome. That said, the printing technique explanations are awesome. The book covers very well both film and digital technique; the film section (on which I feel entitled to give an opinion) is superb, especially the printing examples.I would have loved to see more on film scanning, which is not covered in nearly enough depth. I do hope that the author can make a follow-up edition once technology gets more stabilized. The picture examples are oriented towards landscape and portrait subjects; this is fine if you keep in mind that there are other subjects and styles. In any case, it is wonderful that the author is ready to comment on stellar examples of his own work. Style is personal, but techniques and concepts may be widely applied.I would also have liked to see more about composition elements, and stronger examples of how composition works (or not), since composition is a defining element of photography. But there are already good works on photographic composition. I love the author's stand on composition rules, too.On the whole I find this a very useful work. I wish I had this book available when I started on photography as a hobby, so many years ago!

In its enigmatic 25 lines, the Heart Sutra is one of the most difficult of Buddhist Scriptures but also one of the most rewarding. It is a basic text of Mahayana Buddhism and recited daily in monasteries and by practicing Buddhists throughout the world. There are many commentaries, ancient and modern, on this text, but I found this recent book by the Dalai Lama, "Essence of the Heart Sutra" an outstanding place for the beginner to start. The Dalai Lama's book also will reward study by those having great prior familarity with the text. The book is based on a series of lectures that the Dalai Lama gave at the Land of Medicine Buddhist center in California and at the Three Rivers Dharma in Pittsburg. This work is much more than a commentary on the Heart Sutra. It is equally valuable as an introduction to Buddhism and as a compendium of the teachings of the Dalai Lama. It is instructive to see how the Dalai Lama weaves his broad material together into a coherent whole. Thus, in the first part of the book, the Dalai Lama offers broad-based comments on the spiritual dimension of life, of the relationship between Buddhism and other religions, and of the fundamentals of Buddhist teachings. It is inspiring to hear words of ecumenicism, tolerance, and willingness to learn from others. It is also important to read the Dalai Lama's exposition of the basic Buddhist teaching of Dependent Origination, which is, in later sections of the book, tied masterfully to the interpretation of the Heart Sutra. The second part of the book offers a translation and commentary on the Heart Sutra. Consistent with his opening chapters, the Dalai Lama stresses the continuity between this Mahayana text and its earlier predecessors in Theravada Buddhism. (Many other commentaries emphasize how the Heart Sutra departs from and differs from its predecessors.) In addition, in a few brief pages the Dalai Lama offers great insight into the fundamental teaching of emptiness --- that reality is "empty of intrinsic existence." He points out clearly that the Sutra does not teach that nothing exists -- a nihilistic doctrine. Instead, the Dalai Lama relates the teaching of the Sutra to the doctrine of Dependent Origination -- stressing the lack of independent existence, substantiality, and ego. He discusses different ways in which various Buddhist schools interpret the doctrine of emptiness -- including the "mind-only" school and two variants of the "middle-way" school. This material is difficult but important and not stressed in various other commentaries that I have read. The final part of the Dalai' Lama's study discusses the Bodhisattva path of Mahayana Buddhism -- the decision to dedicate oneself to the welfare of others -- and relates it to the text of the Heart Sutra. There are teachings and practices here on learning to practice lovingkindness, also set forth in other writings of the Dalai Lama, but informed here by the discussion of emptiness and nonclinging in the Heart Sutra. This discussion, and the short epilogue, tie together the ecumenical material in the book with the elucidation and analysis of the Heart Sutra. This book presents difficult, profound teachings in an accessible readable way. It is ideal for the beginning student or for those who want to explore the Heart Sutra to see what it might offer. It also presents an exposition of this text by the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. For those who want to read further and compare and contrast other approaches to this inexhaustible text, I recommend Red Pine's study "The Heart Sutra" and Donald Lopez' "Elaborations of Emptiness", a detailed and difficult analysis of the Heart Sutra in light of its earliest Indian and Tibetan commentaries.Robin Friedman

This is a very well written exposition of the Heart Sutra. The Dalai Lama is one of the great teachers of Buddhism. No matter what your spiritual or religious belief's are I think you will get something out of this book. For those who have only read or chanted the Heart Sutra I recommend you read this book as you will probably have a new understanding of it.

This is a beautiful book that contains the purest and delicious nectar of the Dharma of wisdom and ecumenism of His Holiness Dalai Lama, the Buddha of Compassion. It is a text for beginners as advanced students who are wants to delve into the Prajnaparamita teachings. It begins with an introduction full of information about the main topics of teachings of Lord Buddha and the origins and context of the Prajnaparamita texts. His Holiness approach Emptiness from the philosophical Madhyamaka Prasangika perspective, typical of Gelug school. This a more difficult way to understand Emptiness and to integrate to our daily life since it`s an incomplete approach. I found this method excessively intelectual but I understand that H.H. represents the schoolar tradition of the ancient Nalanda.

This is a treasure of Our Shared Heart. The Wisdom of one of the Living Buddhas, His Holiness The Dalai Lama, touches the precious jewel of the desire to be free in every human heart.Light and Love are your birthright through walking the Bodhisattva Path.I wish you Blessings of the Buddha by gifting yourself with this book.Go, go, go beyond, and establish yourself in Enlightenment.Stephen Skelton/Altair

Hmmm, a remarkable book by a remarkable man on a remarkable sutra! The Heart Sutra is the essence of the Perfection of Wisdom class of sutras, which represent the "Second Turning of the Wheel of Dharma". That is to say, the second main set of teachings by the Buddha. The First Turning was on the Four Noble Truths. The Third Turning was on Buddha Nature. But the Second Turning was on the nature of reality, emptiness -- in other words, the important stuff! This is a hard literature, crystalized in the Heart Sutra, which is only a few pages but very dense (versions of it are available on-line). Here the Dalai Lama provides an excellent commentary on this difficult text by placing it within its entire Buddhist context. The result is that one is led step by step to the deepest understanding of this sutra, which is really the most profound element of the Buddha's teaching. Remarkably, then, this book can be grasped by the beginning student as well as much more experienced students. A crucial element in Buddhism is familiarization: going back over something again and again until it is understood very deeply, and then realized personally through meditation. So such approaches, that begin from the basics and move up to very profound topics, should not be seen as needless repetition, but as opportunities to really internalize the teachings. The style of His Holiness's language is always conversational, easy to read, and humorous. This is no exception. The book is also beautiful and a pleasure to read. Most important, it is a crucial teaching that can help transform our lives.

Very good explanation of Heart Sutra by His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

The Heart Sutra can be a bit of a shock to someone extending an inquiring toe into Buddhism for the first time. The book should be read slowly, with many pauses. It is a challenging read. It has become the center for my studies, but I have been a Zen Buddhist for seven years. The book is a translation, with editing, of discourses given by the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. For anyone interested in Buddhism as either religion or philosophy, or in the study of the great religions, it is a valuable buy.

we are using this book for our study with a Buddhist group. We read it and discuss it. As with the Dalai Lama's beliefs, anyone can use the teachings for good in their lifes

From the Publisher

Janine Roberts has a long history of taking on tough investigations - and this she believes is one of her toughest. Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party candidate for US President in 2008 and former Senior Democrat Congresswoman, said of the author: 'Janine Roberts is the rare individual who unflinchingly speaks truth to power. She battles her way through all obstacles and provides us with a glimpse of those who are in the innermost circles of global power... She exposes what they do and how they do it and how it comes to hurt us all. She gave testimony for me at a Hearing in Congress that was shocking in its revelations but thorough in its documentation... I count myself among the privileged of this world to know Janine and her works.' Dr Roberto Giraldo reported of this book that it is written 'in elegant detail and in a most accessible manner'. He also said: 'It is very comforting to read in Fear of the Invisible: 'We have all been taught to greatly fear viruses - yet scientists are now discovering that they are fundamental parts of live, made by the million by all healthy cells. I hope this book will help by combating this fear, this damning of the invisible because we do not understand it. Without this fear, hopefully the focus in medical research will shift to looking more at the environmental toxins that really do put us, and our world, gravely at risk."

Janine Roberts is that rare thing in this modern world of mostly "bought" journalists, a true investigative journalist. Just like the paralysis that was blamed on the polio virus, but was caused by exposure to toxins (historically associated only with metalworking, and beginning in the 1890's with pesticides, first lead arsenate, and later, DDT), what came to be called AIDS, and blamed on a retrovirus, was clearly toxin-mediated, primarily by inhalants such as amyl nitrate, of which the early victims were using enormous amounts. The toxicologists at the CDC were convinced, but the director realized that this just wouldn't do because there was no pharmaceutical profit involved in this approach, so he invented AIDS. In San Francisco, activists successfully educated the community about the role of amyl nitrate in these frightening illnesses, and the rate of illness dropped dramatically. But the CDC put pharma in charge, then kept broadening the diagnosis to stoke fear. Some healthy people who were "HIV positive" began taking the very costly anti-retroviral drugs, at which point their health declined (these are very dangerous chemotherapy drugs). She writes in detail about the NIH's Robert Gallo's fraudulent work and fraudulent "HIV test." He only escaped prosecution because of the statute of limitations, and to this day receives tax money for his "AIDS research." And his "HIV test" is still widely used, though worthless and dangerous.

This book goes deep into the historical record to uncover one of the greatest frauds of the 20th century. Viruses are not what people think they are. They are a smokescreen for toxicity. Roberts goes through the history of polio, hiv and more to uncover the way government and industry science work together to confuse the public and even most scientists and science students. She cites her work extensively. Everything she discusses is from the legit historical record. She pours through the letters, the rough drafts, the memos, the back pages of old newspapers, etc. She uncovers the compromises, the guesses, the outright lies. You will never see viruses, disease or government science the same after reading this book. And your health will benefit for it.

This book should be on everyone's MUST READ list. Janine Roberts did her research, all pages have footnotes telling where she got her information. We need to WAKE UP and take responsibility for our own health...stop depending on a very corrupt and messed up medical system. It is all about GREED (as well as prestige and power!) and nothing about health.

One of the more important books I have read. Not only is the research material good, but the book as whole helps one to understand the game that the Gatekeepers of Medical Orthodoxy play. That game is: thru clever PR stamp out the competition and all other research approaches.

Incredibly detailed and fastidiously referenced. This book details some of the greatest crimes and lies of the orthodox western medical system. From the history of vaccinations to the baseless science that became HIV/AIDS, it's covered with astounding dedication to detail. This is a "must read" for anyone interested in taking responsibility for their own health. It's astounding to think, that the only reason HIV still exists today could be due to the statute of limitations.

This rating is based on the fact that the print is so microscopic I cannot even read it. I even asked two others who generally have better eyesight that I but even they agreed it is a terribly uncomfortable print size

Valuable data - the publication of Dr. Gallo's edited notes is invaluable and if ever publicized should eliminate the fiction of HIV, the only great medical discovery which is unaided by any scientific backing.

an interesting book about the so call plague of our time. the book puts in doubt the existence of AIDS. I recommend that you read it.

My piano teacher recommended this book, "With your Own Two Hands: Self-Discovery Through Music" (1981) to her adult students. The author, Seymour Bernstein, is a noted teacher, pianist, composer, and writer. I learned a great deal from this book about the love of music and about piano practice. I have been playing the piano for most of my adult life but only returned with some trepidation to take lessons about four years ago. This book needs to be read in the way Bernstein recommends approaching a new piece to be learned at the keyboard. Bernstein recommends starting by stuggling to read the piece through to get a sense of its musical message and its demands. If it is a piece that the student falls in love with, he or she is ready to begin the hard, detailed work required to learn the music. Bernstein says that "unconditional love" of a piece is required for the work of learning it well. So it is with this book. It needs to be read through as a whole to get a sense of where it is going and to draw the inspiration to persevere. The detailed exercises, specifics, and recommendations are to be approached selectively and over time. There is much to be learned from an initial cover-to-cover reading; but for the pianist, this is not a book that should simply be read through and put aside. The book proceeds in two related ways that tend to be intertwined throughout. First the book offers broad discussions about music and motivation. Bernstein articulates the value that people find by devoting themselves to the piano. He describes how playing music requires an integration of physical skill, feeling, and thought and then broadens this insight from the piano and music to argue that this integration is required to have a successful, full life. People who perform music seriously, for Bernstein, take one path of the many possible courses of self-realization. It is a necessary path for those devoted to it. There are allusions in the book to philosophy and literature, to meditative and breathing practices and to Zen Buddhism that cast a good deal of light on Bernstein's understanding of music and of practicing the piano. The second part of the book addresses the specifics of piano practice. Bernstein proceeds from broad considerations, such as improving one's concentration during practice time, to specific detailed instruction on matters such as body and hand position, rhythm and volume, securing the independence of the hands and fingers, voicing chords, pedaling, and much more. The book offers many detailed examples and exercises on aspects of piano technique. These sections ideally must be read over time and in detail in tandem with one's practice and always with a broad view of music-making in mind. The book is divided into three broad sections dealing with the necessity and motivations for practicing the piano, the discipline required to play at one's best, and performance, including memorization and overcoming nervousness. The book is written for pianists at all levels of abilities and talents. Bernstein does not write for performers with virtuoso or professional skills, but he does write for those who take their music seriously. For those who have music as part of their lives and want to share it with others, age and natural ability are secondary considerations at best. Bernstein writes eloquently throughout of amateurs who have busy lives and careers in other fields while making time for the pursuit of music. In the "Finale" of his book he writes of these amateurs:"Stimulated at the mere thought of turning a musical phrase with control and artistry, they approach their practicing with a religious fervor and a childlike enthusiasm born of an unconditional love. No one forces them to practice; they are drawn to it. Their lives, they admit unashamedly, would be meaningless without music. Such people, though they may be highly accomplished in their chosen fields, are in truth among the most devoted servants of music. It is they who dignify the status of amateurism." (p.283)Bernstein writes inspiringly and clearly. The book is full of stories and insights, each of which may strike chords for different readers. The book has many anecdotes about one of Bernstein's teachers, the great English pianist, Sir Clifford Curzon. A story that I liked involved Curzon and the music of Schubert, a composer I study.A student of Bernstein heard Sir Clifford perform Schubert's opus posthumous B-flat major piano sonata. He fell in love with the piece and wrote a poem about it which Bernstein then showed to Curzon. Curzon met the student, thanked him for the poem and said: "It is a grave responsibility to love a composer as much as you love Schubert. You have no other recourse then but to practice diligently so as to give back this love to others through performing." (p.203) The student practiced his Schubert and later told Bernstein:"I feel that my love for Schubert shows that I comprehend his music in some very special way. And I think it's this that gives me that grave responsibility Sir Clifford spoke about. You see I used to think I had no right even to speak of my feelings for Schubert's music, let alone try to project what I feel to others in my playing. Now, I'm convinced that what I feel is valid. But only by practicing intelligently do I earn the right to communicate my feelings to others." (p.204)It is a shame that this book currently is out-of-print. It is inspiring to read and will be valuable to serious students of the piano.Robin Friedman

This book was copyrighted in 1981 which may explain the somewhat dated 'NY-psychoanalytic' outlook that reminded me of my clinical training books. The author portrays himself as an emotionally attuned mentor to his students similar to the analyst sitting slightly out of the line of vision of the student at the keyboard (my image from the reading) and guiding their discovery of inner musical potential. I actually think this is an apt metaphor for the special relationship that can exist between a music student and teacher; it is only the somewhat self-admiring quality of his narrative that was slightly off-putting to me. On the other hand, a sensitive and effective teacher is entitled to offer himself as an example. The author is clear that problems in progressing musically are mainly due to failure to practice in an effective manner. However, he willing to venture into interpretation of covertly destructive attitudes of parents or teachers. For example, the author offers as a possible, although infrequent, cause of a student's failure to progress, a subconscious envy, subliminally communicated to a talented student, from a teacher who had him(her)self failed to become a concert pianist and must settle for a career in teaching. While this is possible, it must be extremely unlikely. That being said, the author is clear that responsibility to solve any blocks to musical expression rests with the student. The remainder of his examples are useful or at least merit consideration. He emphasizes the necessity for learning to sight-read, memorization and discusses the problem of performance anxiety. A very intriguing suggestion is his advocacy of group classes as well as individual lessons in order to give the student experience of receiving and giving feedback with peers as well as practice in performance in front of a supportive audience. I would recommend that this book be read in conjunction with Gerald Klickstein's "The Musician's Way" which is more contemporary, offers concrete guidelines for skill development in a number of areas, supported by recent research on memory and reading skills, and is appropriately sensitive to psychological issues.

Because of this book my life took an amazing turn. Seymour has been coaching me as a pianist since 1990! His writing is brilliant. The man is a NATIONAL GEM! Ethan Hawke has produced a documentary about Seymour the past two three years. IF you are a pianist and in need of wisdom your present piano teacher is not capable of sharing READ THIS BOOK. It is a BIBLE.

I really like this book. In a short time it has really helped me. As someone who plays several instruments, I quickly realized that much of the material in this book is equally helpful to those who play instruments other than piano.

I study with a pianist who plays for Seymour Bernstein before giving his own concerts. The book is full of "piano education." Seynour himself studied with a great artist (who wrote the forward). He writes about his own students at NYU, very instructive.

Finally a book on how to practice and perform that puts all others to shame. The most useful information on proper body etiquette, multiple options on how to memorize and repair technique and musical problems.
