I recently had a friend die from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS); coincidentally I received this book as a Christmas gift around the same time. I had seen "Tuesdays With Morrie" in the bookstore, but knew nothing about it and wasn't inclined to investigate further. That was my mistake. This is one of the best books that I have recently read, and is perhaps the best I have ever read that deals so directly with the specter of death.Mitch Albom always regarded Morrie Schwartz, his favorite college professor, as a mentor and inspiration. Despite pledging to stay in touch with his professor after school, he didn't until he heard that Morrie was suffering from ALS. After reconnecting with Schwartz, Mitch began flying to meet with him every Tuesday until Morrie died. This book is an account of that interaction, and the progression of the disease. More than that, though, it's an account of the lessons that Morrie taught Mitch, as much by the way he lived as by the things he said. These lessons form the themes of this book, and they are well worth the introspection that's bound to follow in any thoughtful person after reading this.Mitch and Morrie conceived the book together, but, of course, Morrie couldn't see the final product. Fortunately this book is here for all of us to examine and learn from. This is a book that is quick to read, but takes some time to fully digest: I recommend it highly to anyone and everyone, and especially to those with critical illnesses among their friends or families.While this might seem a depressing book, I actually found it to be quite the opposite. Morrie Schwartz taught Mitch how to live and die with grace, poise, and dignity; thankfully Mitch put this story on paper and used the advance money to pay Morrie's astronomical medical bills. Mitch obviously learned his lessons well.

Tuesdays with Morrie In “Tuesdays With Morrie,” Morrie was a teacher that had an endless amount of love for his job. He made connections with many of his students, and saw many of them as his friends. He and his student, Mitch, had become extremely close with one another. Years passed by and Mitch graduated, unfortunately losing touch with his beloved teacher. While he is living his own live, Morrie has entered a life long struggle. He has been “diagnosed with ALS, and not given very long to live” (Albom, 46). The moment Mitch gets word of this, he knows that he needs to meet with him and catch up before it’s too late. The two decide to meet every Tuesday. During these gatherings, Morrie teaches Mitch lessons that he could not possibly receive from anyone else. He tells him of his entire life, along with his mistakes, and his new found discoveries. His words change Mitch and all of his previous beliefs. This teacher has given his student the greatest gift of all, the gift of wisdom. I loved this book even more than I thought I would. The lessons are so raw and completely valuable to anyone who reads. Your perspective on life will be altered after reading this inspirational story. The love between these two people is so beautiful and deep-rooted. They were not even family, yet they were closer than many fathers and sons will ever be. They shared an unbreakable bond that strengthened throughout the journey of Morrie’s illness. I highly recommend this read to everyone who wants to learn a few lessons regarding life as a whole. You will not be disappointed. I hope you all take the time to read this beautiful piece of literature, it is something that everyone should read at least once in their lives. LK

When Mitch goes back to see his old professor, who has a limited time left due to a disease that has taken over his life, they recall life lessons from Morrie. Filled with advice for all ages, Tuesdays with Morrie is a short book that everyone should find the time to read. Whether you’re looking for a quick read or a meaningful book, Tuesdays with Morrie is guaranteed to leave you satisfied with a new outlook on life. After hearing news of Morrie’s impending death, Mitch takes a break from being a workaholic and goes back to visit his professor. Mitch becomes a developed character after listening and comprehending Morrie’s “last class”. Morrie tells various stories and outlooks on life which leave the reader looking for more advice and insight; for example, one of my favorite quotes from the book reads “Death ends a life, not a relationship”. This is truly a book which discusses the meaning of life, the priorities of life, and the perspectives of life. While this book can be a bit sad, as it discusses death and such, I still recommend this to those mature enough. However, do not be surprised if you become attached to the character Morrie and find yourself upset as you read about what he goes through on a daily basis with his disease. Besides that, Tuesdays with Morrie is a book that all people should read and enjoy. Find time to sit down, to enjoy, and to reflect on Morrie’s pure advice on life.

I read this book when it was first released several years ago and have long considered it a "how to" book when it comes to dealing with real things in real life. I bought three copies; one for myself since my original copy was absconded during a divorce (don't feel sorry for me, the divorce ended up being a good thing), and one for each of two people who I know and love who are going through some "stuff" right now. I wanted to help them see the big lessons in little things, and that in the end, as Morrie said "Love wins. Love always wins."I cannot recommend this book more highly. For anyone, anywhere, traveling this road of life.

I actually purchased this book on Amazon for a bargain price (Daughters of the Samurai: A journey from East to West and back by Janice P. Nimura) because my wife wanted to read it. After she read the book she suggested that I read the book because of my interest in Japanese and American history. This wonderful and highly informative historical tale tells the story of early Japan (1871) and how they sent men and women to America to learn our language and other educational topics in our schools (Grade, high school and college programs). It was a time of great struggle for Japan who was trying to change from a feudal country to a modern society. The turmoil was between the traditional Japanese cultural system promoted by the Samurai class to the modern western approach to modernization in Japan. This conflict led to many battles in the country.This is a story about three amazing girls sent by the Japanese government to America in 1871. These three girls came from the traditional Samurai families. This book chronicles the ten years they stayed in America learning English and other subjects and their return to Japan to become teachers (Sensei) focusing on the women’s education. In the past, Japanese woman’s role was limited to taking care of the home and children. Though I had read numerous historical books in the past on Japan this unique book covered areas I never had read bout in the other books.This is a well written book that also has many photographs of the Japanese men and women who this book is all about. Anyone interested in the history of Japan and the early American educational system will enjoy reading this book.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Nimura’s wonderful book opens in 1871 with the empress of Japan dispatching three clueless girls - Sutematsu Yamakawa, age eleven; Shige Nagai, ten; and Ume Tsuda, six - to the United States. Their task was an almost impossible one: to learn the ways of the West so that their knowledge could be passed on to other Japanese women. Their journey lasted ten years.Nimura paints vivid portraits of each of the girls - the smart, overachiever Sutematsu, the arty Shige, the spoiled Ume. Two of the three end up at Vassar, with Sutematsu becoming the first Japanese woman to earn a American college degree.But back in Japan, they found a world turned upside down.“They were each of them, purebred daughters of the samurai,” the author writes, “they became hybrid by nurture,” not at home in America or their native Japan.“I cannot tell you how I feel,” Sutematsu said upon stepping foot in her native country, “but I should like to give one good scream.”Highly recommended.

This is a slice of history unlike any other I have read. As Japan wrenched itself violently out of its medieval structure, five girls aged 7 to 12 were sent to the United States to live for a decade in which they were to become fluent both in English and western ways and then to return home to teach what they had learned to women in Japan. Given the almost random method of their selection, it is amazing just how well three of them succeeded, both here in the U.S. and then back in the still very tradition-bound Japan. An enjoyable and fascinating read.

René Redzepi is the chef and co-owner of Noma in Copenhagen, four times recognized as the world’s best by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. I will write a fair review (hence the 3 stars, which I think is generous) despite my major disappointment. I follow the Nordic Food Lab, have watched countless videos about it, I've used it as inspiration and have read their scientific articles. I was therefore expecting more of this "cookbook." I make koji, miso, koji "aminos" etc. so I'd say I'm an intermediate koji hobbyist. I have a fermenter for my koji. However, this book did not give me any new information - there's no learning how to do your own experiments, there's just some ideas an inspiration, which you can easily find if you dig a little, or if you have enough creativity. On the other end of the spectrum, a lot of these are even too difficult for me - lots of recipe that require fermenting at a certain temperature for 10 weeks, using ingredients like bee pollen and fermenting it (what kind of home cook has this budget?!), so I can't help asking, who's the audience? It's neither a beginner book, for people getting into home miso and koji-making (The Book of Miso is still the book after all these years and is more comprehensive), nor is it for people who have dabbled looking for more. It gets a few stars because it's a pretty book, has nice pictures, and it's one of the first of its kind - at least starting perhaps a koji-making fad.

The Noma Guide to Fermentation doesn't just teach you "how" to ferment, it teaches you "why." And the biggest why is that the ferments in this book will make your food delicious. The book starts with very easy projects like lacto-fermentation (typical recipe: fruit, salt, jar, time) on through the complexities of making shoyu, the world's most popular fermented flavor. Yes, you can make your own soy sauce! More than that, this guide gives you the foundation (the "whys") that you can use as a jumping point to go beyond the recipes in the book to #fermentallthethings. Thank you, Rene and David, for sharing your knowledge.

My copy of this book was bound poorly (the covers didn't sit flat), so I sent it back. But I couldn't bring myself to ask for a replacement. I would never make more than one or two things from this book, and neither will you. If you want an introduction to fermentation, Sandor Katz's books are just fine. This book is clearly for foodies, not for cooks -- the amount of special equipment you'd need and ingredients you'd have to mail order is absurd. Basic fermentation is not that hard, the web has plenty of info on recipes and techniques -- your experiments are extremely unlikely to poison you, and you'll come away with a lot more knowledge than you will from this foodie-bait.

As an experienced fermenter of many things, this book is valuable to me. I was hoping for ferments that dealt with fish, meat and dairy, but there are none in this book. I'd be excited to see how NOMA deals with those foods. There are innumerable interesting projects to be made from this book, both verbatim and as touchstones for your own ingredients and ideas. The biggest issue I have with it is that this is a book, essentially, of condiments. Virtually everything in here is to be used as either a side, a small element in a larger dish, or as a straight-up condiment. This is not necessarily bad, but remember that if you spend a year aging your own soy sauce, it is, well, just soy sauce. So if you're the sort of person who digs that sort of thing (as I am), you'll like it. If not, look elsewhere.

This book has been written by the fellas from Noma, former world number 1 restaurant on the planet. Rene made clear early on in this book that fermentation plays a HUGE part in everything they do at the restaurant. Each recipe is tried and true, each recipe has been utilized at their restaurant. They explain how to use each recipe and give you ideas on different things you can do.Overall this is the best book on fermentation I have read, it is clear, easy to understand, it is expansive and just straight enjoyable to read. I cant wait to start trying some of the recipes!

Amazing. A detailed guide for the advanced class in fermentation. If you want a more basic or broader book, Sandor Katz’s books are great. But to take it to the next level, this book is truly amazing. It will allow you to undertsand how to apply fermentation techniques to other substrates. Learn how to lacto-ferment and the how to experiment and apply to other items you are interested in. This book in particular is for cooks! Lots of examples of how to utilize these ferments to take your cooking to the next level. I wanted to understand how to use Koji and ferment it; this book teaches me specifically how. I wanted to learn how to build a fermentation chamber - this teaches me how! If you want basics or ready to eat, see Sandor is great. But if you want to take your ferments to next level, this book is indispensable and best in class. Thank René and David.

This is a fantastic extesive book for people/cooks/chefs that want to learn more about fermentation and how it works.If you just want a book to open and cook the same day this isn't the book you're looking for. Overall an amazing read if you're someone who wants to learn how fermentation works and possibly try it on your own.

I honestly was not expecting this book to be as thick as it is. It covers multiple variations on classic fermented foods in every section and gives recommended uses and history for each one.My kitchen is about to look like a mad scientists lab

Seeley’s Anatomy and Physiology was the required textbook for Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 at the University of Cincinnati. This book was so helpful in this class. I would always listen in lecture then refer back to this book to really grasp that topic and read about the small details. This class is a very difficult class to master, but the book went into depth and gave real life situations. For example, I remember talking about negative and positive feedback in the body and the book gave multiple examples for each. An example the book gave is Positive feedback is something like labor during child birth and negative feedback is something like getting hot and sweating. They would often include graphics and diagrams for the harder concepts. They both really help you put the concept into perspective. There were certain sections I remember reading thinking that I felt like the authors were talking to their colleagues instead of a student which made it hard to comprehend at some points, with the help of notes the two were extremely helpful. Along with the textbook I would recommend getting the study guide that is suggested to get with it. It is based off the textbook and has quizzes and different questions covering every chapter. This would be useful when I was trying to figure out what to study more for a test. I would take the quizzes to see what I did not know. I am making this to help students like me succeed. I am majoring in middle childhood education science and social studies. The life sciences particularly interest me which made it easier to read this book. The one point I would suggest to the reader is to split the chapters up in chunks do not try to sit and read a whole chapter in one sitting, this can be very dull and hard to comprehend. The lab book compliments the textbook very well. It offers hands on experiments and explanations that the textbook does not. It helps with the anatomy component as the textbook focuses on the physiology component. If you buy the book new the book comes with an online component that can be used as additional quizzes, explanations, and questions, but if you rent or buy it used you would have to purchase the code separately. I personally thought it was worth spending the extra money. The online really helped me grasp the basic concepts of each chapter. The chapters also summarize what it was about at the end, which I liked very much. The disadvantage to this book is how wordy it can be, which makes it difficult to read about concepts you may not have a lot of background knowledge about. The pictures included with the section often help further explain what the text is trying to get across.

We had to return it because the school required an access code to get to the tests; otherwise we would have kept it.

This is an amazingly good comprehensive Anatomy and Physiology book and is going to be a great supplement to my online course that does not require a book but needs one. My only complaint is that it took SOOOO LONG to get my order. I had procrastinated in that it was just before the semester started that I ordered the book which was an error in my part. But when I ordered it, it said I would get my book within the first week or class which I thought would work out just fine. Well here we are three weeks into the semester and I just received my book. It was stated it would arrive Sept 19 and didn't get here until Oct 2. So as long as you order this book expecting not to get it for several weeks, then you are fine but if you are on a deadline, order somewhere else. As said, it is a great book and I thought a very good price.

The textbook itself is very easy to understand. This was a required text for my course in an undergrad program. The book has lots of drawings and diagrams and breaks everything down so it is easily seen. . If you are someone who needs the information in writing this is what I would advise getting. However, due to the nature of the course, I personally did not require it as much as I thought I would and only referred to it when something was glossed over in class. I am NOT recommending that you don't buy a book. I think usage depends upon the type of learner you are and the quality professor you have. This book was helpful for me and I am sure it will be to others as well.Regarding shipping, the book came within a week of ordering.

It is not programmed for text-to-speech. You are unable to print pages out. Very disappointing. Not able to return, even though it does not meet my needs.

The textbook is easy to navigate and the additional tools for highlighting are a "nice-to-have". The text satisfies my college requirement and for this I have no complaint. The material teeters back and forth from simple high-school audience to advanced college applications. I gave this 2-stars instead of 4 because of the complete Book + Shipping + Purchase experience. I am currently in another country and my Internet point-of-origin or my IP address is based in Europe, I load up AMAZON as an anonymous user who is just window-shopping without logging into my account. The digital text is $53.65 USD. When I log in the price jumps to $237.62 USD. I have attached the pictures from a screen grab.I feel like Amazon has taken great advantage of me and used my demographic information to gouge my wallet. I am a working class individual where every dollar counts. As an illustration of frugal finances but not to whine, I purposely received no Christmas gifts so that I could give my family a better Christmas experience. I have several watches in my WISH LIST that will hopefully be greatly reduced one day. From now on, I believe I will use a disposable email address and route my internet traffic to AMAZON through a VPN. I can use a server from anywhere in the US, compare different regions of the country, possibly lowering the price of sale.I would like to add that Amazon is a business, and if they have a product for sale, they can charge whatever fee they wish. As a customer, I can take it or leave it, and that's the end of it. Since I needed the text quickly, Amazon was my source and I paid the price. I felt it was expensive but I had no other options. My strong disagreement is that I disagree that one customer will pay PRICE A and a second customer will pay PRICE B.Thank you for reading my review, please stay safe and enjoy the limited time you have with your loved ones.

Sad to say I didn't open it because my professor said we didn't need it.I used it as a reference and just before finals I sent it back. If you need this book for sure then go get it!

Thought I would add a current review for the Kindle addition. Everything as described except that the map images are not viewable on the Kindle. You are able to navigate via the TOC and the Index. Problem with the index is that you are not sure exactly what ethnicity you are being taken to because it indexes different areas as they are mentioned in the text, not just that particula ethnicity. You select the page #, then you must go back until you find your heading. It may or may not be the ethnicity you intended.

Purchased as a quick guide to familiarize myself with diverse patient populations in hospital setting. Information is brief, concise, and informative. Recommend to any social worker or nurse manager to understand why cultures may not agree to modern medicine.

A must have for anyone interested in global health!

I also believe that the melting pot theory is no longer viable as it is no longer true," when in Canada live as the Canadians," as we are allowing various traditions to permeate our Canadian culture. it is positive in that it presents a geographic location and health care beliefs and predominant sick practices.
