I ordered this book because the title intrigued me. Upon reading the book itself, it transpired that the subject matter was not just the lives of the four daughters of the Queen but also the Queen of Bohemia herself and her family (parents, husband, siblings) so in that sense the title is misleading. However, notwithstanding, the text is easy going and describes the various wars and intricacies that were part of German and English history at the time e.g. the Thirty Years' War and the English Civil War in a highly readable and down to earth way. I would have preferred the personalities of the 4 sisters to have been honed in more detail although as the book wore on their different characters and influences are brought out, especially with regards to the youngest daughter, Sophia, who had the most bearing on the eventual sovereignty of England. All in all a useful account through which I learnt a great deal about a period of European and particularly English history and especially these 4 daughters of the Winter Queen who turned out to be veritable personalities in their own right and turned the vicissitudes they went through into a life experience all their own.

This is a fascinating book for anyone interested in British royal succession. For me it filled in a lot of the gaps in showing how the crown went from the Stuarts to the Hanovers. Some very interesting and powerful woman played critical roles. Just by a matter of days it was almost Queen Sophia instead of her son George I.

This author writes history in such as way as to understand it and enjoy it! This tale is about the women during the 30-years War, their trials, and successes. I was happy to read this non-fiction book that reads almost like a fiction.

Was a good book on the situation that lead to the current line on the British Throne today. The Winter Queen is a person who usually get a slight mention in books about her brother father or nephew. Nice to see that she can be seen better now.

This historical novel really kept my interest to the end. I was familiar with bits and pieces of the history of Mary Queen of Scots, James Stuart, Charles the First and Charles II. This generational novel filled in all the missing people, places and more. The story about the mother, daughters and family was written with actual historical letters and pictures interspersed within the chaptets. I felt it was written in an epic style. It's hard for me to compare authors as each one is unique but having read all the James Michener books I love a story that involves generations of history. Thank you to the author for the best historical novel of my year.

Terrifically well written book that untangled the intricacies of the Stuart-Hanovarian dynasties and the impact of politics and religion on the descendants of Mary, Queen of Scots. Each of the women portrayed in this delightful book shows how much strong women could persevere despite the constraints against them. Much like the House of Windsor, the women are far more interesting than the men. Instead of the typically heavy going portrayal of historical figures, Ms. Goldstone's book keeps the reader engaged and stimulated by the fascinating history of these families! The illustrations are beautiful additions that add so much to the enjoyment of learning more about these ancestresses of our curent queen. I highly recommend this book!

I was intrigued by John Guy's last sentence in his book Mary, Queen of Scots upon which the movie was based: "In choosing the phoenix as her last emblem, she had written her own epitaph: 'In my end is my beginning'." That's why I read Nancy Goldstone's Daughter of the Winter Queen. This book is easy to read and to follow Mary's descendants even though Mary's granddaughter had 12 children who along with their spouses often had the same names! The Stuart lineage chart in the front of the book was helpful. I was most impressed by the tenacity of these women to hold on to their status and maintain their influence during turbulent times.

Amazing how much of the Thirty Years' War was simply Frederick and Elizabeth losing their throne in Prague, then losing their throne in Heidelberg, then regaining their throne in Heidelberg.

Excellent Seller! This is a great book. It is a little hard to follow b/c the author (IMO) is a brilliant code writer, but the book is a bit disjointed. My opinion is it would be better to tell us JUST what works and not lots of info and methods that don't. That's just me though. Mr. Stridsman goes into great detail regarding the methods that DO NOT work and why. Interesting, but I would rather him just say, "I've tested this, and it doesn't work".For a "coder", I imagine this book would be fabulous. The book is still excellent- you just have to VERY carefully sift through lots of thoughts and ideas to pick out the real "brass tacks". The code is written for TradeStation, and will have to be "tweaked" due to the age of the book. That can be a difficult task unless you are very good with "coding".

Awesome book!

I didn't find this book all that well written. There were errors and inaccuracies in it, and it's logic was somewhat asystematic and protracted. However, it was worth the fight and I learnt things that I have not found elsewhere (at least yet).I would not use the book as an automatic formula for how to design trading systems. However, its overall approach was a good one and I will probably use several of the principles in it to design my own systems. Of course this book is now out of date, and the markets have evolved considerably. Computers are also much more powerful and the speed with which one can assess the effects of changing each parameter are also a lot better.It was a frustrating read in many ways but worth the effort none-the-less.

I've been at this game for thirty years and have accumulated an arsenal of books. This is a 'must read'. Very helpful.

This book was way better than I expected. Stridsman goes straight to the point of telling us which result outputs are important and which are wrong. I have had a lot of difficulties understanding and calculating all these results on my own (results like profitability, end return, MAE, Max DD, ..). This book is the best on explaining the importance of these terms and how we should calculate them ourselves in excel. He uses these little tables to evaluate the backtest results of various trading systems. At this moment I'm using exactly the same tables he does.Part two deals with entries & exits and how to improve them + a series of backtest results on futures.Part three I found the most complicated and hardest to implement. Stridsman also uses the well known MAE/MFE concepts to evaluate stops/exits from trading systems, but he goes a lot further than Sweeney in using them. He works with specified drawdown terms (ETD, CTD, ..). Maybe if I had Tradestation at my hands I could have understand this better, but without Tradestation I didn't get very far unfortunately ...The last part of the book tells about implementing money management systems. He starts with the findings of auhtor Vince Ralph, with the optimal f* theory. Stridsman did a better job in explaining this concepts than Vince did, in my opinion. Most helpful are the excel screenshots on how to calculate/modify the optimal f*.Some downsides of this book:- He does all his testing with Tradestation, which I don't have (I use Ninjatrader and was able to export the Ninjatrader results to excel in a similar way Tradestation does)- Limited on trading systems (He works with just a few purely technical systems)- A bit too advanced at times, certainly with the parts on exits and how to calculate the various MAE points- Only futures are backtestedIn conclusion: If you are using (mechanical) trading systems, or you want to get started, then this book is certainly a good addition to your collection. You will get a lot of information out of it. It's not really a reading book, but more a workbook you use to built spreadsheets or to evaluate your backtest output.

Ventures into Microsoft Excel and Lotus 1-2-3 are also incorporated for fine-tuning the system process to capture as much reality as possible. In- depth discussion over which TradeStation and MetaStock performance summaries are likely to work or not are key. There's no need for a higher understanding of mathematical theory; the book is written with practicality in mind for traders of all levels of experience. The applications are also grounded enough to be used in any trading market.If you're serious about putting together a trading system, or are looking for ideas to enhance your work, this book is for you. I've always had the understanding that no systems that really work are for sale, but this book is like having a key to the garage where you can put it all together.

I have been going to the restaurants run by Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan for many years, starting way back at Cendrillon in SOHO, and now at their wonderful Purple Yam in Brooklyn, but I only just found out that they have a book. Having been to the Philippines many times, starting with my US Navy days in the late 60s to being married to a Filipina for the last twenty years, I am quite familiar with Filipino cuisine. This book is just delightful. The stories that are told are so personal an so educational that I have a much better understanding of Filipino Cuisine and Filipinos. Some of the stories are similar to stories my wife has of growing up in the Philippines, and the rest are wonderful additions to my knowledge of my wife's life before I knew her. Then there are the recipes. I have an extensive cookbook section in my library, and I don't think any of them have better descriptions of methods and ingredients than the ones in this book. All in all this book is a must for anyone with any interest in the Philippines or Filipino cooking. How many cookbooks do you actually read cover to cover? With this one you probably will.

One of the cookbooks that I will cherish and use for a lifetime. I was captivated by the stories of 2 chefs who opened their American dream to make it into a reality. I was longing for a cookbook that had traditional and heirloom recipes from families that had their signature dishes from provinces in the Philippines like Vigan, Pampanga, Laguna,etcetera. This cookbook contains the history, stories from these memorable recipes and why they last for a long time for many Filipinos and other nationalities when they were presented at Cendrillon and at Purple Yam restaurant in New York. I really appreciate how the chapters were presented with introduction of ingredients, categorized into different parts of the Filipino (Spanish )meal - Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Merienda (Snack time) and Dinner.If this book has a James Beard Foundation award because of how this cookbook was presented and the recipes are timeless for the Filipinos and those who are curious and wants to go back to history in the Philippines. Some are traditional, and others have fusion of 2 recipes or cuisines. I recommend this book to anyone who is curious trying Filipino cuisine. I say that Filipino cuisine is often misrepresented because most foreigners feel alienated about how we cook our foods; however, we should have an open mind, heart and tastebuds to educate what Filipino cuisine is all about. I know everyone who has tried Filipino food will often associate with adobo, sinigang, lugaw or arroz caldo, pancit, turon and many common fare. But for those who are curious to go deeper into local Filipino foods that are found in the provinces and are cherished by many -- I think this is the book for you.

this book is as described by Amazon. The book is well-made = quality paper and binding. Many photographs with a storyline traveling throughout the various regions of the Philippines.As it turns out, this book focuses more on the regions and the author's memories in those regions. there's maybe about 50 to 75 recipes in this book (out of 232 pages).If you're looking for a solid Filipino cookbook filled with recipes, than this is not the cookbook for you. After looking at the recipes, there weren't very many recipes that I found appealing and would want to make at home. In a sense, it left me feeling like Filipino food was lackluster, which I know is NOT TRUE. Filipino food offers many outstanding dishes, but I did not find those recipes in this cookbook.I would not have purchased this book if I could have previewed it first at my local public library.

I ordered this book as a present for my 62 year old Filipina half-sister who has been living in the United States since last fall. Communication has been a bit of problem: I do not speak or understand Tagalog; and my sister's English is not fluent. She doesn't always understand what I am saying; and she doesn't always know how to say what she means in English. But this book has helped our communications. We sit together and go through the pages. Since the book is written in English, I read the words aloud; and as we page through the book, my sister points to the pictures and talks about her life in the Philippines. This book is helping me to learn more about the Philippines and, more importantly, has helped to bring my sister and me closer. The book has lots of good info and wonderful pictures. I do wonder whether a version of this book written in the Philippine language is available.

This is a terrific cookbook-slash-food history of a cuisine (or really cuisines) that is becoming more popular but is still not that well known outside the Philippines. Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan are great chefs and great listeners, grounding their recipes in the lives of ordinary home cooks, and honoring their work. It is clear from their recipes that they lament the modern use of processed food--there are no spam fries to be found here--but it is not snobby or fussy food. Dig in!

I bought this for my daughter. She loves this book. Her husband is Filipino and she had bought this book for his mother. Her mother-in-law was very impressed with the book and said the recipes were very authentic. My daughter was most impressed with the photography and the cultural information in the book. It is more than a cookbook. It is a look into the Filipino culture. So based on her comments and how thrilled she is with the book - I have to give it the highest rating.

I am a Pilipino home cook and the recipes here are spot on. I already know how to cook many of the dishes so the reason I bought it is for the gorgeous pictures and the bits of regional Pilipino cuisine history. Reading this book also reminds me so much of home that I feel transported back to the islands for a few minutes when I pop this book open.
