Review

“Art historian Jean-Dominique Rey’s new book, Berthe Morisot (Flammarion, 2011), with an introduction by Musée d’Orsay curator Sylvi Patry, presents a comprehensive tribute to the life and career of the remarkable French artist, from her precocious talent as a child drawing and painting with her sister, to her strikingly loose works produced during the last years of her life.” -Women in the Arts“An illustrated tribute to the celebrated female Impressionist painter. This comprehensive monograph showcases her life and works…” –French Embassy “Berthe Morisot by Jean-Dominique Rey is an elegant presentation of Morisot’s finest work…” –THE Magazine

I just got home from being in Paris, and one of the highlights of this visit was to see the exhibition of Berthe Morisot at the Musee Marmottan Monet in person. This book was available in the giftshop but only in french and I wanted a copy in english. This is an outstanding book about the artists life as well as a very nice look at her work. I did purchase the catalog book there at the shop and see now its not only available here at Amazon, but for a lesser price! When taking in the euro to dollar conversion buying at Amazon saved me at least 30%, plus I didn't have to haul it back from Paris.Great book that you will enjoy for years. Berthe Morisot is due every bit of attention as she was easily as talented and a master as her contemporaries of Monet, Degas, Renoir, etc. In fact I believe she had a better command of colour in her palette and captured the essence of her subjects with much greater clarity many times than did the other Impressionists of whom I truly love. I hope her work continues to please a larger audience now and in the future.

A real treasure, beautiful book on a special artist.

Excellent

Super service. My favorite book. Thank you.

I'm less taken with the book than other reviewers here. The paintings and their reproductions in the book are indeed terrific. But the text has too many lapses, and another editorial check might have helped. Just a couple of examples: on p. 36, the text reads, "The main protagonists are often placed at the edge of the picture, as in "Jeune Femme cousant dans un jardin, . . . " whose empty chair the foreground recalls that of Degas's. . . ." But in the illustration, p. 98, the young woman of the title is dead center, and there is no empty chair anywhere in the painting. The only painting I could find in the book that answers to this description is "Sur la terrasse," p. 85. On p. 38, Morisot is quoted, herself quoting Renoir, writing in her notebook that "Music and painting should never be literary," but only 3 pages later the author treats her as "abolishing the frontiers between between painting and writing," apparently completely misconstruing Morisot's (and Renoir's) firm intention to avoid narrative in their art. An alert editor should have spotted and corrected such seeming self-contradictions within the text or between painting and text. The author also frequently quotes the poet Stéphane Mallarmé, but nowhere describes his relationship with Morisot (did they even have one, or did Mallarmé simply write occasionally about her work?) or puts these rather vague and flowery tributes in any sort of context. [Later: I was wrong, and certainly apologize. There is a section at the end of the book about Morisot and various writers, including Mallarmé.] All that said, the paintings and some of the texts are a wonderful and lucid exploration of Morisot's work, and tell me much more about her than I'd ever expected to know,. I'm grateful to have it.

All too many art historians, "afflicted by the myopia of misogyny," to quote this book, have failed to recognize that Berthe Morisot painted some of the key masterpieces of Impressionism. There are vibrant reproductions of her groundbreaking paintings in this book. Almost every page, in fact, is a feast of light-struck color and dramatic brushwork. Her work reproduces beautifully on the heavy, silky paper used in this printing. The writing is as effervescent and inspiring as the illustrations. I have always been thrilled by the work of Berthe Morisot without knowing why. This author gave me new insight into the secrets of her power and the depth within her atmospheric art. He takes us beyond the "feminine charm" considered her chief attribute by obtuse male critics to what Paul Valery called her "great gift of reducing things to their essence."The book covers Morisot's early influences and art education, her close relationship with her sister Edma who studied and painted along with Berthe, her lifelong friendship with Édouard Manet, her marriage to his brother, and her painterly record of the everyday life of her daughter Julie from childhood to young womanhood. The text examines Morisot's mastery of transparency, unequalled by any other Impressionist, how she achieved unique effects by applying the techniques of watercolor to oil paintings, her rare ability to paint young women and children without falling into sentimentality, her romance with en plein air painting, and the relationship of her paintings to Mallarmé's poetry. There are wonderful quotes from the writers in Morisot's circle who had a deep understanding of her art. And poignant quotes from the artist's notebooks and letters. This is a delightful book, visually exciting and a pleasure to read.

Review

“Many of the maps include not only typical information regarding towns and cities, but also details regarding battles that were fought and locations of key Armenian structures. . . The detail included in the atlas alone is amazing. But the atlas is not limited to only maps. There is also considerable text that accompanies each map explaining interesting features, including the commerce that the region was known for . . . the historical structures that were built and destroyed, and the various ethnic groups that occupied the land. . . . The maps are packed with information about physical geography, demography, and sociopolitical, religious, cultural, and linguistic history.”--Armenian Bar Association Newsletter (Armenian Bar Association Newsletter)“Concerned not only with the evolution of the Armenian empire-state from ancient times to the present, this atlas is also a highly informative history of Armenians covering an astonishingly broad range of subjects. . . . This rich and magisterial atlas is highly recommended.”--Choice (Choice)“Robert Hewsen has prepared an opus magnum that has no rival in Armenian studies. This pioneering and largely definitive work is the best atlas of Armenia ever prepared. It will be a valuable tool in the hands of historians, geographers, and students of Armenia and the Armenian people. . . . The atlas is accompanied by a rich historical and geographical text that enriches it enormously. The maps themselves are computer generated, clear, well presented, and attractive. Hewsen is to be heartily congratulated on a work that is extremely useful and will now form the authoritative basis for this field. All students of Armenia are in his debt.” (Michael E. I had already seen this book before I purchased it. Although I have not yet gone through it thoroughly, my purchased copy confirms my earlier impression of a magnificent work, whose text has, however, not been well proofread. For example, you read that there are three lakes in the Armenian area, and TWO of them are described as the deepest! However, the actual depths are also given, so you can work out for yourself which is the deepest, if it interests you.Having seen it first, I then went on to purchase it, so that speaks for itself. I recommend this book.

This atlas is full of interesting information and maps dating from ancient to modern times. An excellent resource for one interested in that part of the world.

There isn't a more comprehensive book detailing the history of Armenia & the Armenian Highland than this atlas. It is a must have for any history enthusiast/student studying the history of Armenia, the Near East or the history of the world in general.

A monumental achievement! Exhaustive, well researched, meticulous scholarly work with beautiful maps. Dr Hewsen deserves kudos for this much needed historical atlas of Armenia

Very good. However, I disagree with some, very few, of the authors statements. But, this can be said about any history book. Trust, but verify. It is so important, when we talk about history in general and, especially, about history of a country that old. There is no even one history book, that tells you an absolutely truth. It is, only, the opinion of the author. People have to remember it.

Robert Hewsen's "Armenia A Historical Atlas" is a true masterpiece. This atlas contains 278 detailed color maps that chronicle Armenian history from antiquity to the present day. The maps are meticulously accurate, very detailed and visually appealing. They also show precise topographic, political, religious, onomastic and historical details. There is a mixture of many regional maps, detailed local maps, city maps and even building plans. Each map is accompanied by a very detailed overview of the time period and theme covered in the map. The work is a remarkable feat of research, drawing on countless primary and secondary sources in numerous languages. The real strength of this work is that it chronicles, in both visual and written form, Armenian history from generation to generation over millennia. As such, this book is an invaluable resource for all histories that coincide with Armenian history, especially the regions of regions of Eastern Anatolia, Western Iran and the Caucasus. You will find numerous historical details about Byzantine, Persian, Eastern Christian, Seljuk, Georgian, Ottoman, Russian and Soviet histories not easily found in other historical atlases.I highly recommend this atlas to anyone interested in Armenian history or in the history of this region.

This is an amazing atlas presenting in-depth covering of the long and turbulent history of Armenia. There are numerous publications on Armenian history, but they either contain plain maps, or plan text. This one not only presents an enormous number of extremely valuable and rare historical maps covering about three thousand years' history, but also presents in a very reader-friendly style unbiased historical facts associated with every single map. More than that, it presents invaluable statistical information, such as the population by regions. It also presents very intriguing architectural data. One of invaluable features of the book is the coverage of the Armenian genocide and the first republic. This is more than a book - it is a great treasure that anyone interested in history in general and Armenian history in particular MUST have.

I absolutely love this book. It is THE authoritative geographic resource on Armenia and the Caucasus, featuring tons of historical information and visual illustrations. It is everything that a Caucasus specialist needs plus more. The only work that comes close to it is the Russian-language "Atlas etnopoliticheskoi istorii Kavkaza (1774-2004)" ["Atlas of the Ethno-Political History of the Caucasus (1774-2004)"] written by the Russian-Ossetian scholar Artur Tsutsiev and published in Moscow in 2006. However, even that work, as good as it is, does not have the scope, grandeur, or majesty of Hewsen's atlas, which measures 19x11 inches and includes three hundred and forty-two breathtaking pages. Highly recommended for any serious student of Armenia and the Caucasus.

It's great to see a book for young girls with two female leads. Romance still has its place in the book, but the friendship of the two leads is at the focus of the story. This book plays with so many fairy tale tropes and cliches. Many well known fairy tale characters make appearances or are referenced. The concepts of villains and heroes, evil and good, are really played with. It really plays with assumptions and what you are inside. I loved all the parallels and the fairytale roles different characters took.I had so many different thoughts on where the story was going, but my theories constantly changed. And I didn't predict the ending. This book had my brain constantly working. There are a lot of physical attributes corresponding to good/evilness though. It's addressed, but one's inner self was often reflected by their outer self. There are a few LGBT references in the book, but some just as jokes or shock value. I wish I could have seen a different representation. That of course was one of my early theories too. While reading this book, I couldn't help seeing it as a musical, either stage or movie. There were even some lines of dialogue that after reading them seemed like the title of a song. There's apparently a sequel coming out in a few months. I was surprised because the ending wasn't left super open ended. I do like the sequel's title though: A World Without Princes.I enjoyed this book and think it would be a great book for girls especially age 10-14. I'm not saying this is a girl book, but I think young girls would enjoy this different take on a princess story. I, a 24 year old man, enjoyed this book as well. I give it a 4.5/5.

(Review by my 11 year old daughter) I loved It! I loved the whole series! It is just a wonderful book for all ages. I do recommend that you do read the books in order because you may lose some of the magical experience of the series and get very confused if you don't. Although I think that these books are good for all ages, I do recommend that the person reading this book should be over 9 years old due to in the last Ever After being a high reading level, and including death and blood (but that is not what the book is all about so I still encourage everyone to read it!). Although the story is mainly about two girls, I still think that boys will enjoy reading it as well. The series is a meld of many themes such as: Friendship, Romance, Finding Yourself, small amounts of comedy, and so much more! I was hooked on the first page!If you liked "The Sisters Grimm", "The Fairy Tale Reform School Series", old fashioned fairy tales,"Harry Potter", and maybe even Disney movies, then I encourage you to READ THIS BOOK! It by a long shoot has taken 1st place in my favorite book list.Have fun reading! :)(No flaws!)

I have read a lot of books over the years. I mean a lot of books. I can honestly say I've never come across anything like this before. It's as if the author read a fairy tale, looked at the way we have to go to school to learn our jobs in life, and thought, "What if the princesses, princes, and villains in fairy tales also had to attend school to learn their roles?"Villains learn how to monologue, princesses are taught how to talk to animals and how to beautify themselves, while princes are taught how to be valiant and sword fight. The book, of course, mocks some of these classes. In one part, the main prince couldn't come up with a rejoinder to a princess and instantly started a sword fight with one of his classmates instead.Sophie and Agatha are well-written and it's fun to read what they will decide to do next to get to what they believed were their proper schools. And since I have never even seen a book like this before--the closest probably being Harry Potter--each attempt was a complete surprise. I was even surprised at the ending, but it was fitting as well. All in all, I would definitely recommend this YA fairy tale to anyone who enjoys these kinds of things. It's a fairy tale with a definite twist, some of it dark, but all of it great fun. I will reread this book in the future and I know I will enjoy it again as much as I did this time

Sophie and Agatha are two girls from the same town. Every four years the schoolmaster abducts two children from the town and these children are never seen again. Or are they? The children of the village have noticed that some of the missing children are appearing in the new fairytale books that are issued once a year. Sophie is convinced that she is a shoo in for the School for Good and that she will become a princess. She is very vain and cares more for her appearance than she does for the feelings of others. Her friend Agatha has no delusions of being a princess. She sometimes thinks that the only reason that Sophie is her friend is to give her "good" points. On the night that the schoolmaster is supposed to make his selections, all the parents have done all that they could to make their children unattractive and difficult to obtain. Sophie's father has nailed her windows and door shut but she has unfastened them. Agatha joins Sophie and they are both whisked off to school. However, it does not turn out as Sophie thought for she is placed in the School of Evil and Agatha in the School for Good. This is book one in a series. I liked the dichotomy of the plot. It certainly had a lot of action. I'm not certain that this is truly a book for children. The moral ambivalence may be too much for them. Although the first book was entertaining, I'm not going to pursue the series.
