(This Amazon review is based on an actual diary kept by "Go Ask Alice" author, Beatrice Sparks. It is not a definitive statement on the veracity of authors or the written word. It does not offer any proof. It is, however, a highly personal and specific chronicle that foreshadowed the later works of James Frey, Augustus Burroughs, and J.T. Leroy. As such, we hope it will provide insights into the increasingly unbelievable literary world in which we live. Names, dates and places and certain events have been changed in accordance with the wishes of those concerned. Like the book, this review is a work of fiction. - The Editors)September 16, 1968Dear Diary, I came up with a brilliant idea: Write a make-believe story - but say it is nonfiction - about a teen drug addict. Maybe I can crib enough material from my work as a Mormon youth counselor to make it all sound real.October 10Oh, Diary, It's so much fun to write fiction. Whoops! I mean, nonfiction. My main character is an anonymous 15-year old girl from a two-parent, Christian (but secular) home in which the father is a professor of Political Science (maybe his permissiveness led to his daughter's fall from grace?). The mother is a homemaker and not one of those kooky, bra-burning feminist rabble-rousers like Sonia Johnson! (comment added later - Ed.)June 15, 1969I've added two Jews to the story. One is Beth Baum as the BFF (adolescent slang for "best friend forever"), and Sammy Green, who dates our tragic character shortly before she becomes an addict (an inciting incident, perhaps?).July 14, 1969Dear Diary, I can cross another evil off my list. Today our character wonders if she's more interested in girls than boys. It's not long now before she's mainlining heroin.October 18, 1969Who do those homosexuals in Stonewall think they are? I've added a man-on-man sex scene to show the evils of a liberal society that believes in the laws of men and not the laws of God. God made Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve!LaterI'm conflicted. Should I write in bestiality, too? What wouldn't a drug-addicted slut do? I'm not sure since I'm making it all up as I go along.(?)Sweet friend, Diary, The climatic scene is straight out of Armageddon - tearing of hair, gnashing of teeth, breaking of bones, maybe an eye gouging or two. She's committed to a mental ward since her life of pleasure has been insane. She starts to pray "Now I lay me down to sleep"... I think this is called foreshadowing.September 21, 1971Today I sold the rights of, "Just Say No," to a big-time New York publishing house. They have changed the title to "Go Ask Alice," even though Alice isn't even the author. Beatrice, uh, Anonymous is. I wonder if teens will believe, I mean, buy this book....

Kind of wavered between giving this two or three stars, but there were parts I liked so I went with three. My boyfriend recommended this because he remembered reading it in middle school and thought it was awesome, though he did add as an after thought that he wasn't sure if he'd still like it or not. He's not a reader, so I figured it must be pretty good. After finishing it I realized that, had I read this in middle school, I probably would have loved it as well. Reading it now though, I can't say the same.First off, I'm gonna say that you can't go into this thinking it was actually a real diary because it just simply is not. It's been ripped apart by people saying a teenage girl would normally ramble on more about boys and idle chit chat, but in the books defense who would actually read it then? It's clear it's not real, but let's be honest with the exception of Anne Frank, no one is interested in a reading a teenage girls diary. It does have it's ups and downs, and I did get attached to the main character, but so many times I found myself wondering where it was actually going. It gets near the end and she's doing good and I was just happy with how things were working out for her. Then, in the last entry she just kind of adds, as an after thought, that she doesn't think she'll keep a diary forever because adults don't need to, even though she makes it clear she doesn't feel like an adult yet. Really just out of no where she mentions adults don't need to write in diaries and suddenly she's done. It felt like the author (Beatrice Sparks) wasn't sure how to end it/ got sick of writing and just kinda tossed that in there. And then there's the epilogue. And you're left with a, "where did that come from?" feeling. Again, she didn't work it in very well, and jumped from one extreme to the next. This may be a spoiler so if you really don't want to spoil the ending don't read this part, but after the book ended I could think of only one thing. If you've ever seen the movie Mean Girls, during the sex ed. classes the gym teacher says "Don't have sex, you WILL get pregnant, and you WILL die." I feel like Beatrice Sparks is that gym teacher's mother. "Don't do drugs, you WILL die." That's really how sporadic the ending felt for me.All in all, I didn't hate it, but it could've been done a lot better.

I first read Go Ask Alice when I was in middle school. My sister asked me to buy it for her~ so I did. I thought it'd be kind of boring now that I'm 56 yrs old. I was wrong!! It is even more meaningful to me now! I work with the public and see a LOT of drug addicted people. This book is so worth-the-read for every young person. I highly suggest reading this book!!

Pretty good, I don’t usually read books that were written like a journal but I heard good thinks about it. It was a real page turner and kept you interested the whole time. The ending make you extremely happy until you flip the page and then find out what happens 3 weeks later. I sat there pissed off after I closed the book so the next day I looked up blogs about the book to get more information and I was extremely disappointed to find out that the book was actually fiction. At first the book left me feeling shocked that this was a true story and I totally believed everything I read and then when I found out it was fake It just makes the you feel like you were lied to. The ending pissed me off but finding out it was all fake pissed me off even more.

Tedious. Preachy. Obviously fiction. This may have worked to scare kids into not using drugs in the 1970s; I hope no one is relying on it to do that today. Basically, it’s a quaint, naive relic from the beginning of the “war on drugs.” I did give it an extra star in recognition of the fact that it probably read better decades ago than it does today.

I bought this to review for the Principal 068 TEXES exam, just in case there were any legal/law questions on the exam. I did not need this for the exam at all, but I still found it to be a great resource. I like that it covers the laws and goes into depth about the how and why some have come to be the way that they are here in TX.

this was the text for my educational law class. you would think a text such as this would be dry and boring, but FALSE! interesting and well written for a student studying the content area. i learned so much reading this book.

I bought this book for a graduate law class, and it is wonderful! It provides a very clear, detailed analysis of Texas court cases pertaining to education on a wide variety of issues from prayer in schools to dress codes to discipline. We read the book cover to cover, but I feel this is more of an easy reference guide Out of all of the books I purchased for grad school, this will be the most valuable and helpful for when I become a principal.

Not the most exciting read, but very informative. Every parent in Texas should take an interest.

Required textbook, but very well written and updated!

Very informative, I'm not a lawyer so I have to reread some stuff but overall a good book to understand Texas School law.

fast ship; appears as described. Have not studied from it or taken the exam, so no ability to comment on the assistance.

A wonderful explanation of the pertinent laws and cases as they apply to Texas schools. Always engaging, sometimes quite funny, this is book is a joy.

#20,985 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

While I've been a fan and follower of Michael Hyatt's blog for a long time, I did not receive a free copy of Platform. I confess, as much as I like his blog, I wasn't going to buy the book for two reasons:1. Prior to the launch of Platform, he mentioned much of the content was reworked material from old blog posts (which I assumed I had read previously).2. Since I teach others how to start their own blog, I am already up to my eyeballs in information of this sort. Therefore, I thought I would hold off and wait until I could get a copy at the library.Incidentally, I bought the book the day it launched, swayed by all the 5-star reviews, enticed by the freebies he offered during launch week and intrigued by his launch process, which I wanted to watch first-hand (you just never know when that information will come in handy).I have read the book in full. Here are some of my thoughts, in no particular order:-- Overall, his tone is very encouraging and inspiring. I've read other how-to books in which the author seems arrogant and condescending, leaving me feeling discouraged and inept by the end. That was not the case here. By the end, I was rearin' to go!-- He makes a strong case for learning the ins and outs of social media as a way to grow your business, even if you don't have a lot of computer background, or if you feel technically challenged. I am also self taught so I wholeheartedly agree. As he says, the best way to learn, is to dive in and go for it.-- He talks about the importance of having a blog (or website) which acts as your home base online. I wholeheartedly agree with this point as well. However, like so many others, he doesn't go into great detail about exactly *how* to start a blog other than to offer tips such as "I recommend a WordPress.org blog." On the other hand, he goes into great detail about starting a Twitter account and he devotes several chapters to using Twitter effectively (see below).-- When looking at his numbers, it's worthwhile to note, even though Hyatt started his blogging and social media journey like many of us (with little background knowledge), he has had significant advantages which I think have helped his online presence grow so well. He is graced with connections to well-known and very influential people (great for interviews, endorsements, etc). It also doesn't hurt to be the Chairman (formerly the CEO) of one of the largest publishing companies in the U.S. To be sure, this is well deserved, and his experience is vast. Clearly, he has worked very hard for many years to build a huge network of excellent contacts. He definitely makes no guarantees if you use his tips, you will reproduce his results, but I do think it is helpful to look at those results with his background in mind. I appreciated seeing his hard numbers (great transparency), but even though my numbers don't come close to his (and I've been at this for years too), I need to look for upward trends, not specific numerical benchmarks, which would indicate growth.-- It is true, much of the book content is reworked posts you can find for free on his blog. I found myself thinking many times, "Oh yeah, I remember reading this..." If you're not already familiar with his blog and don't feel like poking around there to see what he has written in the past, it's probably worth having all the info packaged nicely.-- He offers a lot of tips for Twitter but doesn't talk about Facebook, Google+ or any other social media platform (except to mention he's not a huge fan of Facebook). Clearly this is because he has had the most success on Twitter, which is understandable. But to those reading, it's important to know who your audience is before assuming Twitter is the place to be. His target audience might be on Twitter, but if your target audience hangs out on Facebook or Pinterest more than Twitter, you should be on Facebook and Pinterest, not Twitter.-- True to Michael Hyatt style, the book is packed with helpful, actionable tips that will help anyone who wants to become active and effective in social media.Beginners may get overwhelmed. There is certainly a lot of excellent information, but if you try to take it all in at once, you'll want to run for the hills! Tackle it in small chunks and implement his tips as you have the time. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. It really does take a long time to get established and start seeing results.I can't remember if he said it explicitly in the book, but I would also add, ideally you will dive into social media *before* you have something specific to say or sell, not *when* you have something to say or sell. Hyatt's right, it's all about relationships these days, so the sooner you can get those relationships started, the better. Then, when you do have something to say or sell, you can tap into what you've already established.Overall, it's a great reference that I'm sure I'll be returning to again and again.

This book is so filled with stimulating promotional ideas that I marvel how anyone could do all or even most of them. Michael Hyatt must have more energy than any other ten people combined. He's blessed to have that energy, but energy, like all other good things, is a gift from God. For those of us whose gifts don't include such unrelenting speed and focus, the list of promotional tasks that we apparently must do to rise from obscurity is overwhelming. I've incorporated some of Hyatt's ideas into my own online presence, but I don't have the time or resources to do a lot of them. Thirty minutes a day posting on Twitter, in addition to everything else? Maybe not. What I'd like to read is a synopsis or synthesis of Hyatt's ideas, perhaps in order of what's most important or useful for most people. A list of five tasks is more likely to get tackled than a list of a hundred tasks. But then I guess it wouldn't be a book. Oh well. I envy Hyatt's aggressiveness and promotional success, even though I know I'm not called to that.

Through this book, Michael Hyatt single-handedly changed my views about social media.Hyatt's depth of knowledge, his practical tips, and examples that resulted in his own success make his message compelling. Yet, he never talks down to the reader. I had never heard of Michael Hyatt until I got his book. I was just looking for a way to believe that social media was worth my while, and a way to get some "science" for how to use it. Hyatt's book provides all of that, and more. For those critics who note that Hyatt lifted some of his blogs to create the book, I'd say: Right! As experience authors, we ALL snitch stuff from our stash! But the original blog is amplified, updated, polished, and organized into context for the book. I might add that I've read some parts of the book more than once; not because the content is hard to understand, but because it takes much practice to fully implement what he's suggesting.I can't remember how long ago I bought this book, but I keep going back to it. Honestly, I went from thinking that social media was just a bunch of dribble to believing that social media is the key to getting your message out there if you have anything--anything at all--to say or sell.I handle all of my books very, very gently. But I've just plain over-used this book. And, I am beginning to want one copy at home, and one at the office!

This is a good primer for anyone just getting started in building a platform online. If you're an entrepreneur, writer, or blogger, this is basic information to get you started on the right track. It's very comprehensive in that sense.Caveat: I think a portion of the information is or will be dated soon, simply because technology and social media changes so rapidly. Mr. Hyatt does especially focus on Twitter as that is his favorite social media platform. That advice wouldn't necessarily apply to everyone, though there is no one cookie cutter approach that will be ideal for every audience. If someone says that there is, I would be wary of that advice.Overall, Michael Hyatt is a wealth of information and I trust his integrity, so I think it's definitely a worthwhile read.

Maritime Logistics: A Guide to Contemporary Shipping and Port Management

Review

"[C]overs everything that students and industry professionals need to know about maritime logistics." (Jason McDowell Inbound Logistics)"International trade is growing faster than the global economy - and most trade continues to be seaborne.  Orders may be placed electronically, but the actual movement of the goods still requires ports and ships.  Maritime logistics is thus evermore important for any country's development.  Understanding contemporary shipping and port management is vital for businesses and policy-makers in leading their companies and countries.  Written and edited by some of the world's most renowned maritime economists, this new edition of Maritime Logistics is both timely and important." (Jan Hoffman President, International Association of Maritime Economists)"It is only occasionally that a book of this quality becomes available.  Essential reading for all those with an interest in logistics.  Comprehensive, up to date and perceptive." (Professor Michael Roe Chair in Maritime&Logistics Policy, Plymouth Business School)"[A] timely, informative and authoritative look at the global maritime logistics industry, helping explain its history, considering its present-day challenges and operations and casts an eye forward to its future." (Darren Ingram Darren Ingram Media)"A real tour de force in its comprehensive coverage of the shipping and port industries." (Kevin Cullinane Professor of Logistis&Transport Economics, University of Gothenburg)

as usual its a CILT book by the famous leading publisher in Logistics and transportation Kogan Page!!!!!!

Excellent

I loved it! And I received it on time!!

A rather amazing book that sadly won’t get the attention it thoroughly deserves. This hefty tome provides a timely, informative and authoritative look at the global maritime logistics industry, helping explain its history, considering its present-day challenges and operations and casts an eye forward to its future. It is clearly aimed at the academic or industry participant and for its target audience it has scored a bulls-eye. Yet for the more interested generalist it still offers a lot, although you can understand they are less likely to stumble across it, if nothing else because of its price. It is a bit of an expensive casual read, but still a great bargain if you have a need for it as you will get your money’s worth. This is a revised (second) edition, a worthy upgrade if you will, with new chapters on port-centric logistics in concept and practice, hinterland logistics and global supply chains, maritime transport and logistics as a trade facilitator, and future trends and developments. Don’t worry if you feel that you are treading in deep water, as the book’s team of international experts who act as contributing authors manage to find a level, aided in no small part by its editors, or collective voice that can appeal to audiences of all levels and experiences. This reviewer is no stranger to the world of international logistics and freight shipping, albeit mostly as a passive participant and occasional importer, yet this book managed to throw a lot of “I didn’t know that” or “I had never thought of that”-type reactions in to the reading mix. A lot of the book’s detail went clearly over this reviewer’s head, yet it didn’t feel as if things were being wasted either, and surprisingly rather a lot of things stuck in the mind. Anyone who works actively with logistics could stand to gain a fair bit of background knowledge and actionable industry information from this book. Students and other academics have access to a gold mine. For example, it is not necessarily a given that an importer should have the exporting party arrange the freight booking. There can be often advantages in the booking, seemingly a trivial detail, being handled by the importer. Three sentences in the book, hidden in plain sight, could easily see the book pay for itself within one purchase if that situation becomes actual: “These surcharges can easily raise the total transport bill by 50 per cent or more, and they make the transport cost for ocean shipping complex and difficult to interpret. The chosen Incoterms determine which party books ocean transport. This can also have an effect on the height of certain charges…” Blink and you miss them at your peril!Or what about one sentence, drawing on academic research, that suggests even the method of freight handling and its routing can be a bigger deal than you might exist: “… estimate the impact of time delays on trade, and find that each day's delay reduces the probability of trade by 1–1.5 per cent. Time delay really is a trade barrier, and ocean shipping, which causes structural delays, can be seen as the cause of this.”If I am an exporter, maybe it becomes in my interest to start to look at different ports, for example, as the larger port might not necessarily be the cheapest or the most expedient to handle my freight: delays that annoy my customers might start to have an impact on my bottom line. Maybe I can save my customer money as well by suggesting they book their freight. Little things have a lot of possible impact. The bottom line: if you are professionally involved with maritime logistics, however tangentially, or need to study this area, buy this book. If you are curious and open to new knowledge within the “non-fiction” genre, try to get this book – even if you have to borrow it from a library. Strangely enough, when this reviewer first saw the book’s title and speed-read the marketing blurb, one was expecting an entirely different book. First impressions can thankfully be deceptive!

Ridiculous amount of repetition. Practically all of the sections in the chapters repeated themselves. And the authors waste so much space in the "introduction" section of each chapter - where they take a page to tell you what they're going to repeat in the chapters. I hated reading this thing

This was an entertaining read that kept me up all night. In the entirety of the book, there was only one thing that I was able to predict and it was in the first part of the book. The rest of the book kept me engaged because I honestly didn't know what to expect next. We only get to read the book from the main character's perspective so we only know what he knows. Turns out, he's out of the loop on a lot of things. In a previous book by this author, Mogworld, I enjoyed his playing around with words. And this book is similar. Because mathematics created Quantunneling, and Quantunneling put the space pilots out of business, mathematical terms became dirty words. As a result, this is a very clean book with only one or two dirty phrases. After the first couple of chapters, hearing someone referred to as a "bracket" no longer seems out of place. It's a rather natural linguistic turn that helps to create and sell the world.I really don't think there was anything in this book that I didn't like. Yahtzee covers a lot of fictional and science fictional tropes within this satire, but they feel like they are a natural part of the world. From Angelo, a space pilot who'd gone native on another world until the princess dumped him, to evil corporate overlords with spoiled children. This book takes place outside of our world, but everything that Yahtzee put into it felt like a natural addition. Nothing was added or mentioned for no purpose and nothing felt out of place. And I STILL couldn't predict anything! The ending for this book wasn't the grand boss battle that I usually like for my sci-fi books. Instead, I got an ending that I didn't know I wanted until I got it. It was a great way to end the book and leave me with with a satisfied smile. So, if you are at all interested in satirical sci-fi novels, I highly recommend you pick this up. Yahtzee has an amazing sense of humor that is complimented by his intelligent story telling. I greatly enjoyed this book and am very glad that I bought it. I will be picking up more of Yahtzee's books.

One of Croshaw's better books. There were a lot of moments in the early and mid parts of the book where I was legitimately laughing out loud.It also contains some of the more (initially) interesting characters in the author's works.I was honestly kept reading for most of it in equal parts wanting to get to the next funny bit and wanting to see where the characters went.Unfortunately, there's a "However" to this review. The book really loses steam the closer it gets to the end. As for humor, I don't think I laughed at all in the final 100 pages, which, for a comedy story, is a bit of a problem. And the characters never really go anywhere interesting.I can clearly see the author was trying to subvert your expectations by not having characters develop the way they normally would. The problem I've often seen with authors who try this, and, unfortunately, Croshaw is no exception, is they're so focused on subverting tropes, they neglect to have the characters develop much at all. Other than the main character, no one involved changes much from the beginning to the end. Their situations may change, but their characters seem mostly unchanged. The female lead is particularly noteworthy in this regard. She starts out mostly unlikeable, continues to be mostly unlikeable, and finally evolves to be mostly unlikeable. To paraphrase Croshaw's own words "Intentionally unlikeable is still unlikeable."Even the main character's arch is pretty unsatisfying. Which, again, given the themes in the book, may have been intentional, but that doesn't prevent the reader from feeling disappointed in the end. There's also a big mystery hanging over the majority of the book, which ends up never being solved. It seems like the authors hints at the secret at the end, but if the solution he's implying is what I think it is, it carries some MASSIVE consistency issues.Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I couldn't help being let down by it. There's a strong theme throughout poking fun at the typical Space Adventures of Captain Dashing, which is used well for a number of laughs and pseudo-poignant points, but with such a lackluster ending I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd rather have read one of those books. In short: Worth a read for the first 75%-80%, but it deserved a better ending.
